"Christopher Bishop’s 2006 book “Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning,” arguably one of the triggers of the current popularity of machine learning, is quite literally a book about applied mathematics, diving into probabilities, linear algebra, neural networks, Markov models, and combinatorics. And rightfully so; if your objective is to find a job as an engineer at OpenAI, knowing a thing or two about eigenvalues and eigenvectors is definitely going to be useful."

Just found out about the "take" command in Oh My Zsh, and oh my (pun intended) is it useful!
As the name suggests, it's a command that takes you where you want to be, combining multiple tools (e.g. mkdir cd) into one neat little command.
Found a nice article explaining what it does for anyone who's not familiar with it already:

I struggle to process the fact that Todd Blanche gave my husband his very first job offer in law.
(Yes, THAT Todd Blanche from the DoJ, deputy attorney general, the one who has been in the news for all kinds of terrible things he’s up to)
I went to a party with that guy 3 years ago! And now he’s doing increasingly cartoonish villain things every other week.
He seemed normal. Fun, actually.
And then months after he went to defend Trump as his personal lawyer and since then we’ve continued to be confused and disturbed.
We haven’t had any contact with him after he went to work for Trump, of course. But I can’t stop wondering how the fuck the person my husband worked with is the same person defending pedophiles. (Allegedly)

What was A practical skill very important when you were a teen (12-18), that is still still very useful today but most current teens no longer are able to do?
Think concrete stuff like remounting a bicycle chain, not abstract stuff like critical thinking.
For me it was definitely going to places without modern navigation aids.
Just look at a map and write down the rough route and asking directions if I couldn't find it.
And if I needed a train, I'd just look at t…

I have an idea. If we used people to do work, rather than paying for AI agents, then we wouldn’t need to pay for them to not work. Also, we wouldn’t have goodness knows how much electricity used on it.

Incredible. I love the idea of taking checkpoints and the "papers please" mentality, and turning it around on the nazis.

Post by MiniMia (whose instance I can't reach; maybe they defederated from my server?), which reads:

"Twin cities rapid responders continue to innovate. If ICE occupiers want to continue moving rapidly through town, they will have to pass through a maze of checkpoints set up by neighbourhood defenders, run for and by community volunteers.
