Being vegetarian at buffet-style hot pot is the way to go. All the meat costs money and the veggie/noodle/soy stuff is free.

Such non-sense. Just put clear labels on things.
Whatever, #soy-based slice etc.. It's not hard.
And be honest about it being processed.
A lot of the stuff can easily be self-made. 🧑‍🍳

Having gone vegan, I genuinely struggle now to square vegetarians' love of animals with the realities of the dairy and egg industries. For context, I grew up vegetarian and went vegan about 5 years ago now, but I realized the inherent moral tension back in college (I just wanted to do some research to ensure I wasn't losing nutrition and stuff, more on that later).

If you believe conservatives, Germans are allegedly confused about "soy milk" and if it is cow-based or not (hence you cannot name it "milk"), but at the same time it's virtually impossible to know if a certain type of cheese is vegetarian or not (not talking about vegan!) without reading the fine print. That's a fun experience if you ask for that at a cheese counter in your local supermarket 🤷

As usual at the kid's bday party, the vegetarian food was gone and the gross-ass meat (in this case burgers and less-gross-but-still-meat-tastic chicken fingers) remained. People need to stop overestimating how many people want meat at parties..

We have a vegetarian haggis for #BurnsNight supper tonight. Not for any squeamish reason about eating offal, but simply because when looking at the nutrition information panel, that version was significantly lower in sat. fats and other bad stuff than the normal haggis.
Of all the things that as a young man I might have expected middle age to bring upon me, voluntary semi-vegetarianism was not one of them!
