Whilst I don't take Intercept stories as gospel this seems well researched though it is repetitive and overly long, on the NY Times Oct 7th piece.
To me this is a case of confirmation bias; the NY Times wanted a sensational story and sent a staffer who doesn't understand confirming sources to manage a stringer that was inexperienced and found nothing but was continually pushed to find it so it became a conspiracy myth.
