“A country might justify that position if it used the proceeds to build something (anything!) like world-class public services, extraordinary infrastructure, or a society so well-functioning that the trade-off had a visible return. Ireland did… None of this. It extracted from others and failed to build anything for itself. That is the uniquely disgraceful aspect of the Irish model; not the extraction alone, but the total nothingnessthat followed it. The nothingness we live in.”

In and of itself these bills are a good thing, but it seems bad that that we're essentially letting landlords off the hook and expecting tenants to make this investment in solar power. It should be treated like other appliances, such as ovens and refrigerators, that we expect landlords to provide. Furthermore, it's not apparent that this legislation forces landlords (or HOAs for that matter) to allow for these systems to be installed.

It Can Now Be Plainly Said:
Trump Is Planning a November Coup d’État
During the campaign, it was kind of hard to picture the specifics of how Trump might pull such a thing off.
Alas, it’s getting less hypothetical by the week.
Back in 2024, Kamala Harris and the Democrats struggled to convince voters that a second Donald Trump term would constitute a serious threat to democracy.
We can debate the effectiveness of her, and their, rhetoric.

This event overwhelmed the news of many other ice rescues that had to be done on the weekend across the Great Lakes basin. After a week period of *extremely warm temperatures where everything was clearly melting, it doesn't matter if you drive 2 hrs to get there. Many first responders had to risk themselves to save these people. Stay off the ice!

Even more depressing, for the last week of tedious browsing, I can't seem to settle on another dirt-cheap ~€300, non-32", non-Sony, non-Samsung, 4K, at-least-a-solid-60Hz TV set that I am confident would not die on me or would not run out of smart software support within the next three years.

I •do• actually expect to see some kind of shift over the next week. I don’t think their “Victory! Now we’re leaving(ish)!” press conference last week was something we can take at face value, but I also don’t think it was just a ruse.
After they murdered Alex Pretti, the writing was on the wall. One killing of a white observer they could try to write off; two is a pattern. They’re losing support they desperately need — from politicians, from the press, from judges, from less-extreme right-wingers — and the longer they continue doing what they’ve been doing, the further they dig themselves in a hole. I’ve been expecting for a while that they would declare MISSION ACCOMPLISHED and change strategy.
