I got lost in Wikipedia Transistor articles, and found out about two of the old types; Grown Junction and Alloy Junction; The Grown Junction in particular sounds quite fun in changing the molten source as you pull the crystal out of it.

The swifts (Mauersegler) are back. We’ve been waiting for them for some days now. Today my wife and I were talking about it and then spotted the first scouts. We love their joy, play and acrobatics in the sky. Soon there will be hundreds around. But hard to photograph because they are so fast.

If you think it’s impossible that large, established, publicly traded companies can be massive frauds you really need to read the Wikipedia article about Enron.
The alarm signals right now from Tesla (multiple senior people stepping down, massive axing of entire departments, rumored pivot to software/AI only) are bonkers.

Did you follow the story of John Demjanjuk, a Ukrainian-born USA citizen initially accused of being "Ivan the Terrible" and extradited to Israel to stand trial. He was convicted, but - to their credit - the Israelis became aware of evidence that called the identification into question and repatriated him to USA. The old Israel wasn't all about hatred and revenge - there was also room for integrity.

As you probably know, I'm living under a rock. And from reading "The Experience Machine" by Andy Clark (I've only started, but I suppose it's already worth recommending), I've just learned about "The Dress".

It's just wow. And the best part? When I looked at it on the phone, in the bright sunlight outside I've perceived different colors than when I look at it on the TV screen, inside.
[EDIT: Just repeated the experiment. Looked on the phone inside the room first, then went out and look in the sun — and I've perceived different colors. It's worth noting that I have a crappy phone with glossy screen.]

Diplomacy is a profession , an art maybe. Scholz is not mastering it and doesn't think about deterrence and deliberate/strategic ambiguity etc. Instead he makes absolutely clear Russia does not need to fear NATO troops and weapons in any context in Ukraine. True maybe, but why make Putin more secure and confident ?
Maybe he should agree a pact like in the Molotov-Ribbentrop days (being cynical here).

This is not a particularly sustainable form of agriculture, but there's something fascinating about the regularity displayed at such a scale.

Honestly, I love reading Stephen Jay Gould's essays on #evolution, #biology and other topics. Some of them are almost 50 years old, many of them are outdated (sometimes corrected by later essays), many of them state things that are obvious to people living today.
Nevertheless, they're not only written in great style, but reading them is like witnessing history in the making. It's not like dry facts you learn a school, or historical accounts made by people with future perspective (though Gould often did such accounts as well, and tried to put ideas in context of their era) — it's about witnessing them as exciting new ideas.
The first collection is #book
