A starter pack of questions to help think about "discovery" and "knowledge":
1. When was X discovered?
2. Once it was discovered, who knew X?
3. 1000 years later, who knew/knows/will know X?
4. Is X true?
5. Which groups of people would say it's true vs. false?
When X is "a² b² = c² in a right triangle" we think there are nice clean answers to these questions. But when X is "COVID-19 transmits via small airborne aerosols and a mask is needed to reduce the risk of infection" things get more interesting, particularly the answer to question 1. Does something count as "discovered" if many/most people would say it's false?
People love to answer this question by appeal to "scientific consensus" but the scientific consensus on aerosol transmission is still shaky if you consider certain big institutions, and even if it's mostly settled now, there was definitely a period between "experts on transmission know it" and "there's a scientific consensus." So which counts as discovery? What if knowledge is held secret, like many military technologies? What about historical facts that become censored?

Abstract: A relying party validating a hybrid X.509 certificate --- carrying both a classical and a post-quantum credential --- must distinguish whether its accepting judgment rests on the post-quantum evidence or only on the classical path. To preserve compatibility, the separable designs place that evidence where classical path validation may ignore it. A verifier can then validate the classical path and accept while the post-quantum evidence never bears on the decision --- a valid classical result silently promoted to a hybrid conclusion it did not establish. We measure this across eight path-validation stacks (seven independent codebases), in nine validation modes, over six certificate schemes. Under a hybrid-required policy, nearly every stack parsing a separable hybrid certificate accepts on the classical path without making the post-quantum evidence outcome-bearing; one enforcing mode instead fractures interoperability over a signature-input encoding not yet interoperably profiled; and stacks that verify post-quantum signatures still do not enforce the binding by default: the gap is structural, not explained by missing primitive capability alone. Under lifecycle desynchronization the downgrade is realized: when a bound post-quantum credential is revoked while the classical certificate stays valid, the default path still accepts, because the bound credential lies outside the decision's scope. Binding success is not authentication success. We contribute a specification-derived verifier model and an executable, policy-parametric reference contract --- what a verifier must recognize, verify, make outcome-bearing, and check before reporting a validation as hybrid --- with a diagnosis of why standards do not require it.

Abstract: We give a spectral description of the self-similar collapse profile of the Constantin-Lax-Majda (CLM) equation, the $a=0$ anchor of the generalized family $w_t a\,u\,w_x = u_x\,w$, $u_x = Hw$. Linearizing about the exact profile $\Omega(y) = -y/(y^2 1/4)$ and realizing $L_0$ as a closed operator on the origin-$H^2$ space, we prove three things at $a=0$. Its essential spectrum meets the closed half-plane $\{\mathrm{Re}\,\lambda \ge -1/2\}$ in the single vertical line $\{\mathrm{Re}\,\lambda = -1/2\}$: the line is placed by a log-widening Weyl sequence, and an explicit Hardy-Mellin resolvent bound constructively empties the rest of the half-plane apart from $0$ and $1$. Its full point spectrum over $\mathbb{C}$, on the odd realization, is exactly $\{0,1\}$, the scaling and time-shift symmetry modes, with no embedded eigenvalues; removing these by the standard modulation leaves a spectral gap of $1/2$ on $X$. The linear semigroup and its exact decay rate $e^{-\tau/2}$ are computed in closed form, but on a weighted space of the conjugated variable reached from $X$ by a bounded transfer map; we keep the two separate, since $L_0$ is non-normal and a spectral gap does not by itself give a decay rate in the $X$ norm. A realization dichotomy identifies the in-strip smear of generic discretizations as the faithful spectrum of the maximal $L^2$ realization, which origin-$H^2$ removes. For $a>0$ we prove a conditional two-line inclusion for each admissible smooth focusing profile, recompute the branch $c_l(a)$ of Lushnikov, Silantyev, and Siegel as a cross-check, and record the formal scaling-relevance exponent $s^*(a) = 1/c_l(a)$, below which fractional dissipation is asymptotically subdominant in self-similar variables for fixed sufficiently regular data. The contribution is the realization-dependent spectral picture of the collapse profile itself.
