Federal prosecutors can’t seek the death penalty against
Luigi Mangione in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson,
a federal judge ruled Friday,
foiling the Trump administration’s bid to see him executed
for what it called a “premeditated, cold-blooded assassination that shocked America.”
Judge Margaret Garnett dismissed a federal murder charge
that had enabled prosecutors to seek capital punishment,
finding it technically flawed.

Content warning: ICE, racism, police brutality

An extremely simple syllogism, for which the evidence is ample and has been easily available for over a decade:
ICE : white people in Minneapolis ::
regular police : Black people everywhere in America
If you're saying "Abolish ICE" right now (as you should be) but you're hesitant to say "Abolish the police" then you're okay with the brutality as long as it's reinforcing the racial hierarchy, and that's not a good look.
I understand that "Abolish the police" is a scary thing to think about if *your* experience has been that they keep you safe, but recognize how much of that is myth vs reality, e.g. have you ever personally had a positive interaction with police, or do those all happen in stories? Also, even if they do keep you safe, is it worth it if the cost is brutality to the marginalized? (No, it's not.)
At minimum we can see the following behaviors on both sides of the syllogism:
- retaliation for legally "protected" defiance or even just observation
- random killings, with mostly-nonexistent repercussions for the officers involved
- regular widespread harassment & surveillance
-more that I don't have time to list right now. Feel free to reply with your own examples.

After years of failing to produce a profitable augmented reality platform,
Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta is pounding one of the final nails into the coffin of its metaverse efforts
— the ones that were once so central to its vision that it renamed the entire company after them.
This week, the Wall Street Journalreported Meta was laying off some 1,500 employees from its Reality Labs division,
-- the department working on Meta’s virtual reality products.
As part of the …

Owl City has been an interesting recurring character for a long time. He fundamentally makes kinkade music, but in many instances there's something unintentionally captivating about watching a sheltered autistic christian man trying and failing to emulate the sterile neurotypical inhumanity of late 00s commercials, attempts at sincerely becoming what the squeakiest cleanest presenting factions want giving birth to an entirely different surreal alternate reality from the one he professes …

An attorney for ICE emailed Clayton’s office to say that the memo that prosecutors had relied on to defend the government in the lawsuit “does not and has never authorized” the arrests near the immigration courts, after previously claiming the opposite.

"Yet what matters isn’t the specific phrases, but the overall message: Donald Trump now genuinely lives in a different reality, one in which neither grammar nor history nor the normal rules of human interaction now affect him. Also, he really is maniacally, unhealthily obsessive about the Nobel Prize.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee, not the Norwegian government and certainly not the Danish government, determines the winner of that prize. Yet Trump now not only blames Norway for failing to give it to him, but is using it as a justification for an invasion of Greenland."

The 2026 Contract Reality: George Pickens vs. CeeDee Lamb insidethestar.com/the-2026-con

The United States is on the cusp of becoming a pariah state,
ruled by a spoiled man-child who is increasingly and openly mocked for his obvious failings.
It only takes one person to say the emperor has no clothes to give others the courage to act.
