I just counted the number of candidates running in the California "jungle" primary - all parties, all candidates, one election and the top two, and only the top two, move onto the general election in November.
The number: 61 candidates.
That's less than the 130 or so who ran a few decades ago, but it is still a long list. And some of the candidate names seem fabricated.
(The R-party candidates have a strong chance of taking those two top positions and locking…

A mountain lake with deep green water in front of a steep talus slope and vertical rock face going up hundreds of meters directly behind. The lower parts near the lake are covered in dense bushes of dwarf mountain pines and some larches, all faintly reflected on the lake surface. The beautiful sunny day brings out the autumn colors with some of the larches in bright orange. Semi-overcast blue sky.

As a mostly JS developer I'm confused by WebIDL. It seems like WebIDL's ability to define the types of JavaScript objects is substantially more limited than TypeScript or other user-land type systems. I assume that if TS or another system were unambiguously superior, it would have already been adopted by groups in this space
What makes WebIDL preferable?

I ride a (legal) e-bike and I approve of this move by the Orange County (Calif) DA.
Every day, every hour, I see kids, without license, without insurance, and seemingly without sense, riding illegally powered e-motorcycles that masquerade as e-bicycles, at greatly excessive speeds and ignoring even the most basic rules of the road.
(We have a real e-motorcycle company in our area - Zero Motorcycles - those are serious machines that are not the ad-hoc devices that these kids are r…

This judge's decision is, to my mind, moldy rubbish - and I hope the appeals courts feel the same way.
The judge threw out Virginia's redistricting (election just yesterday) - on the grounds of the Supremacy Clause in the Constitution.
The clause:
This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in Pursuance thereof; and all Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land; …

This article is interesting about thoughts of using flying networks to support military operations.
It is a complex system - and my sense is that they will screw it up with application specific protocols and APIs that evolve and change over time as as military events (the kind that go boom or are intentional forms of in-band attacks - think everything from hyper-phishing to spoofing to zero-day attacks).
But even if it were put together with the precision of a Swiss watch, my old…

More on Alexa - When I'm build up a new computer (which I often do several times a day) I begin in the BIOS by setting the time to GMT.
So I usually say "Alexa what's the GMT?"
Old Alexa would promptly give me an answer.
New Alexa takes about five seconds of deep (and probably power consuming) thinking and then tells me the meaning of GMT.
Then I yell that I want the time in GMT and, after that five second pause, tells me the GMT time (but not the …

I have never lived very far (often walking distance) from the Pacific Ocean.
Many inland places beautiful and calm - places like western Nebraska, northern Arizona and New Mexico, the forests of New England [particularly after a summer rain] are all wonderful.
I was surprised discovering the upper Mississippi (Lake Pepin) northward. The rivers of western Pennsylvania and West Virginia are a joy in the spring. It is easy to understand why Martha Graham and Aaron Copland titled t…

I had not heard that the US military is cooperating with the small-reactor companies (run by people like Thiel and Andreeson - gee where have we heard those names before?) to transport the prototypes of these small nuclear reactors by air.
Indeed one such flight has occurred (carrying the large pieces of the reactor on a C17.)
Now, I am a supporter of new reactor technology as a way to provide CO2 free baseline power sources until such time as we can go full solar/wind/tidal etc…

So I propose that we keep DHS shut down, unfunded, until we se some ill impacts, if every.

I just discovered that Freebsd 14.3 won't boot on may newest machine - because Freebsd isn't sufficiently "Secure Boot" signed.
(Fedora Linux 43 booted up just fine.)
I would have thought that the Freebsd folks would have nudged a proper signing key out of Microsoft by now.
So to boot Freebsd (14.3) I had to disable Secure Boot in the Setup.

In the last couple of days I have had two different types of NUC sized computers, both with Intel x86-64 processors (of different generations) that refuse to put out a video signal via HDMI to an LG 4K monitor.
If I switch to Display port (either via a true DP interface on the NUC or via a USB4==>DP cable) things work just fine.
Weird.

I remember reading cases of "wrongful birth" in which children sued their parents for withholding care (or using voodoo "natural' style medication) resulting in the child being damaged for life.
Seems like that notion - child's rights vs parents - ought to be expanded.

I see nothing in the US Constitution that blocks Presidents N 1 et seq from revoking Pardons and Commutations made by Presidents N and before.
Now, many will claim that historically pardons/commutations are a one-way ratchet. But I would answer that that such a belief is merely inertia because the question has never been clearly faced, much less clearly answered.
It seems to me that when we (if ever) get to begin reconstructing the US after trump that we will have to face some s…

Still playing with the new Alexa Echo Show.
The new Alexa is interesting. But it it ensconced in a device that has code that must have been written by a kangaroo trying Vibe coding. (It's predecessor device was also awful.)
The thing does not understand day vs night, at least not consistently. It insists on alternating between being totally dark and then blasting images of El Cheato at 3am at maximum brightness. It can not remember its clock format. Even if you block all …

So, now the nutz are thinking of invading and occupying Kharg Island, Iran's main oil export terminal.
I wonder if the nutz - cheato and baby bibi - recognize that they have placed Iran in a life-and-death situation.
And when faced with national death Iran may well choose to destroy the facilities on the island and the undersea pipelines leading to the island.
Iran knows that the main issue on the mind of many isn't the war itself - we are, after all, a country made…
