TFW you walk by the office of a colleague who you haven't seen in years and are convinced hasn't set foot on campus in an even longer time than that and the lights are on.

I’m re-reading the notorious German grandmaster Wolf Schneider. Precise language can achieve a lot. Yet it’s tough to cultivate.

Being "cut out for this" is a perverse myth that racists, misogynists, and queermisic folks among others in our society have been all too successful at ingraining in our consciousness. "Being allowed to actually focus on this" is absolutely real, and those same oppressive formations gleefully lay siege to these that in everyone they hate, while yelling about "intrinsic" ability. "Being prepared for this at X age" is also real, and suffers when you weren't allowed to focus on the material in the past.
This has been a subtoot of dealing with shitty academic circumstances for my students.

If you can't review an ms, tell the editors immediately! They won't hate you because you'll be making their lives significantly easier - they can go to the next reviewer on their list rather than having to wait through weeks of being ignored. Plus, there's nothing like the buzz you'll get from saying 'no'.

Hello #academicchatter does anyone know the thoughts behind Cell Press' increasing adaptation of Far East imagery in their journal covers?
this one is a latest example! Has references of other cultures been enacted the same way?
Just curious 🧐

The secret to writing papers appears to be a secret stash of chocolate that is only allowed to be eaten while writing papers late in the evening when the rest of the family is in bed. It's amazing the motivation it supplies.

A party game of moral dilemmas and trolley murder.

If you manage your course materials (slides, lecture notes, exercises, etc.) using #git, how do you deal with semesters? That is, do you consider the course as something that evolves linearly, or is every semester a distinct unit, e.g., a branch or a separate repository?

Been teaching intro CS in Python for 5 years now. Every semester a student (usually inadvertently) teaches me something new. Last semester it was:
d = {}
for d["key"] in stuff:
...
(Works by updating the dictionary value in each iteration, which makes sense)
This semester, it's:
list.insert(-1, item)
(Inserts item before existing last item, so the item ends up at index -2, which is a bit confusing.)
Thankfully, I enjoy the learning process :)

First task of the week: check email, write to do list. Lots of reviews and grading this week, plus 5 texts of different sizes (1-20 pages) that urgently need my attention. Thankfully, teaching needs relatively little time compared to other years (usually there's a lot more still to do in the 2nd week of classes). I wonder what admin time-hog I've forgotten about... #academicChatter

The worst thing about AI-written papers and AI-written reviews of AI-written papers is that it is bound to get worse, but it won’t crash.
Too many benefit from it, notably BigPub, institutions that love the simplicity of quantitative evaluation, but also academics who thrive in such a system.
For them, the negative impact on science is an externality—and they didn’t care too much about it before either.

Whenever I'm asked to evaluate a broad range of files as part of some competition - for fellowships, grants, awards, etc. - I constantly need to check my natural inclination to be hardest on those projects I know the most about. It's all too easy to become the distracted boyfriend meme, giving high marks to things I'm fairly ignorant of while failing to appreciate solid work closer to home.
