"So let’s get one thing out of the way: I think “AI literacy” is a dangerous device of neoliberal education and it deserves to be dismissed out of hand."
"Using AI is not about communicating. It’s about avoiding communicating. It’s about not reading, not writing, not drawing, not seeing. It’s about ceding our powers of expression and comprehension to digital apps that will cushion us from fully participating in our own lives."
The US Secretary of Education, Linda McMahon, seemingly does not know about the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre or Ruby Bridges:

Folks in NZ are starting to realise the implications of the impending EOL of Microsoft Windows 10 for our education system. In its finite wisdom, our MinOfEd has effectively locked all schools into either the use of MS Windows or Google ChromeOS. Both have fundamental issues like endless license hassles, EOLing OSs, ending support for Window or ChromeOS on specific computer models, etc. And that doesn't even start to talk about digital colonisation & sovereignty (see

Education Secretary Linda McMahon, in a statement, said Columbia’s leadership
“acted with deliberate indifference towards the harassment of Jewish students on its campus”
and urged the accrediting body to keep the department informed of any actions taken to ensure Columbia’s compliance with accreditation standards.
“Accreditors have an enormous public responsibility as gatekeepers of federal student aid,” McMahon said.

Dangerous Questions in Astronomy Education
As astronomy enters an era defined by global telescope networks, petabyte-scale surveys, and powerful computational tools, the longstanding goals of astronomy education, particularly introductory ``ASTRO101'', but equally encompassing both higher and lower level courses, warrant fresh examination. In June 2024, the AstroEdUNC meeting at UNC--Chapel Hill convened 100 astronomers, education researchers, and practitioners to synthesise community perspectives on the purpose, content, and delivery o…

Trump administration freezes $6.8 billion in federal education funds -- California is hit hard
Trump is holding back funds to help educate English learners and the children of migrant seasonal workers, among other programs.
State officials are expected to challenge the moves as illegal.
The cuts total $6.8 billion nationwide and at least $811 million in California.
It doesn't take much to create a #fedi alternative to #Linkedin. We just need structured profiles (featuring experience and education) and posts (that let people know if they could still apply or position is taken).

I’m fond of quipping that arts education is •the• foundational form of education, and that education in any field should never stray too far from being arts education.
It’s little wonder that the forces that push investment bubbles and wealth concentration are so hostile to both the arts and education. And we need to recognize that hostility, which is so often cloaked as support:

The Trump people have just announced that they have sent a letter to Columbia’s accreditor, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, accusing Columbia of being in violation of civil rights law.
My initial reaction is that this is good news since it implies both that Columbia hasn’t further caved-in yet and makes clear that the Trump people have run out of ammunition
