I CANNOT WAIT for this book. Emilie is brilliant and her work has been an inspiration and beyond helpful as I try to write a very similar history but of Canada, rather than the US. Out next week!!!

Yet another masterclass in how to write a bizarre, amazing song by the living legend known as Charles Thompson and many other names, such as Black Francis, here: youtu.be/L6WL3SkBE1c?si=FG-Klr

I love how everything I write now (or edit after reviews) involves extra steps in looking up Internet Archive links for British Library web pages and blog posts so that links in footnotes actually work.

Been on another kick of reading Soviet history lately and boy-oh-boy why does every other page I read make me realize how much the current US administration is just copying the good old Russian autocracy playbook?
I need to write some essays about this, because the parallels are worth examining if for nothing else then simply for learning from the past.

I haven't written about it because I have no idea how to write about it. NATO arming against the United States?! The US threatening what some have called the longest period without "global war" since the fall of the Roman empire? Cruel was bad enough; do we need stupid too?

I just found out that in old planes, flight computers were programmed with audio cassette tapes 😯 which now makes me want to look up how data recording on MCs worked on the C64 (before my time).
I remember that in the 90s, I tried to run "play.exe word.doc" to get my SoundBlaster card to write to my cassette tape. Which of course didn't work.
I bet there is a FOSS project that backups and restores to audio cassettes.
Well, I guess now I know how I'll spend my…

O! how I faint when I of you do write,
Knowing a better spirit doth use your name,
And in the praise thereof spends all his might,
To make me tongue-tied speaking of your fame.
But since your worth, wide as the ocean is,
The humble as the proudest sail doth bear,
My saucy bark, inferior far to his,
On your broad main doth wilfully appear.
Your shallowest help will hold me up afloat,
Whilst he upon your soundless de…

So I was going to write a short piece about this, but I'm so plumb out of time, and it would be so weird to put this in Metacurity as a special report that I'm writing a social media thread instead.
Last summer, I wrote a piece about the Coinbase breach based on an extensive conversation I had with the exchange's CSO, Philip Martin, who has serious chops as a cybersecurity guy.

I think I need to get more involved in OpenSCAD, or maybe just try to learn more about how to best us it, and improve my own workflow. I read a few things today that will really help me out. I will probably write up a blog post about it as well. (I already donate monthly because I use it so much!)

About to write a complex application for a research grant in Africa. It is at least 3 full days of work, apart from the research itself. And it's a very unpredictable outcome. But without these grants from public and private donors, it would not be possible to carry out such documentation or reportages abroad.
I will focus on the support of renewable energies by German ODA and how the diminishing aid is affecting it.

I’ve worked over the past year to reduce the amount of noise in my consciousness on a daily basis.
By that I mean - information noise, not literal sounds “noise”. (That problem was solved long ago by some good earplugs and noise canceling earphones.)
I’ve gotten used to spending less time on social media, regularly blocking most apps on my devices (anything with a feed news, most work communication apps, etc.), putting my phone and other devices aside for extended periods of time. Often go to work places with my iPad explicitly having its WiFi turned off and selecting cafes that don’t offer WiFi at all.
Negotiated better boundaries at work and in personal life where I exchange messages with people less often but try to make those interactions more meaningful, and people rarely expect me to respond to requests in less than 24 hours. Spent a lot of time setting up custom notification settings on all apps that would allow it, so I get fewer pings. With software, choosing fewer cloud-based options and using tools that are simple and require as few interruptions as possible.
Accustomed myself to lower-tech versions of doing things I like to do: reading on paper, writing by hand, drawing in physical sketchbooks, got a typewriter for typing without a screen. Choosing to call people on audio more, trying to make more of an effort to see people in person. Going to museums to look at art instead of browsing Pinterest. Defaulting to the library when looking for information.
I’m commenting on this now for two reasons:
1. I am pretty proud of myself for how much I’ve actually managed to reduce the constant stream of modern life esp. as a remote worker in tech!
2. Now that I’ve reached a breaking point of reducing enough noise that it’s NOTICEABLE - I am struck by the silence. I don’t know what to do with it. I don’t know how to navigate it and fill it. I made this space to be able to read and write and think more deeply - for now I feel stuck in limbo where I’m just reacquainting myself with the concept of having any space in my mind at all.

'writing is more than just the process by which you obtain a piece of text, right? it's also about finding out what you wanted to say in the first place, and how you wanted to say it. this post existed in my head first as a thought, then it started to gel into words, and then i tried pulling those words out to arrange them in a way that (hopefully) gets my point across. ... i alone can get the thought out and writing is how i do that.'

I like when pundits write articles about how the pundits got it all wrong. It like the takes-having equivalent of “You are not in traffic you *are* traffic.”
