Abstract: The region near the interface between cortical bone and the medullary cavity (the endosteal surface) is of particular interest for the early detection of osteoporosis. This region is typically the first to exhibit signs of unbalanced remodeling (enlarged pores and increased surface roughness). In this study, we analyze ultrasound reflection at the endosteal surface to introduce a novel potential biomarker of cortical bone health based on specularity. Our hypothesis is that increased pore size and surface roughness enhance ultrasound scattering, thereby reducing specular reflection. We reconstruct maps of specularity by combining a signal processing technique initially designed to enhance specular reflectors in soft tissues with a beamforming technique that accounts for refraction at bone soft tissue interfaces. Specularity values (between 0 and 1) quantify the similarity between received signals and signals from an ideal specular reflector. Using numerical simulations and ex vivo measurements with a 2.5 MHz phased array we highlight a strong relationship between specularity and bone microstructure, as assessed by high-resolution micro-computed tomography. Among 12 regions of interest (ROI) in the femoral bone of three donors, 8 ROIs without large pores showed high specularity (>0.5) in over 50% of pixels, in contrast to 4 ROIs with signs of extensive remodeling. Both pore volume fraction and pore size were strongly associated with specularity. In simple linear regression analyses, each parameter individually explained 84% of the variability in specularity. These findings suggest that specularity reflects bone microstructure and may potentially serve as a sensitive marker for identifying cortical bone degradation near the endosteal surface.

Abstract: In-storage computing (ISC) is considered a next-generation memory architecture for its ability to relieve the data bottleneck between the host and the memory. While the required resources of large language models (LLMs) have increased significantly in recent years, the memory density has not scaled accordingly. Recently, several works have studied NAND flash-based processing-in-memory (NAND-PIM) schemes to exploit the high density of the memory. However, they do not address the dataflow/buffer for the intermediate values, so a simple method is to deal with the values in the slow flash memory array. To overcome such a limitation, we propose a high-performance NAND flash-based ISC architecture with enhanced activation buffering. Instead of using the very slow flash memory array for the intermediate values, our architecture buffers the values in a fast DRAM subsystem. This approach effectively handles the high-latency penalties when activations are programmed into slower TLC NAND flash. We also introduce a distributed dataflow approach for the NAND-PIM array. This approach maximizes computational parallelism by employing efficient intra-plane data mapping. The results show that our proposed architecture achieves significant performance improvements, reducing the inference latency by up to 85% compared to the baseline.

Abstract: FLASH radiotherapy (FLASH-RT) is the phenomenon of relative sparing of normal tissue when ultra-high dose rates (UHDR) are used compared with conventional dose rates (CDR) as clinically used. Despite extensive investigation, the underlying mechanisms remain unexplained. Among the proposed hypotheses, tissue oxygen has consistently been a central theme because oxygen is the most dominant factor known to modulate radiation-induced damage. The factors implicated in FLASH sparing include the baseline partial pressure of oxygen (pO2), transient radiolytic oxygen consumption (ROC), and oxygen-dependent changes in the chemistry of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that vary with dose rate. This review synthesizes current evidence on in vivo oxygen measurement techniques, highlighting their capabilities and limitations in capturing the spatial and temporal heterogeneity of tissue oxygenation. Key experimental studies in skin are summarized and interpreted by modulating oxygen levels via changes in inspired oxygen gas and vascular clamping interventions, demonstrating that the FLASH effect occurs only at intermediate baseline pO2 (normoxic or slightly hypoxic) values, but not at hypoxia or hyperoxia. Direct measurement of oxygen consumption during UHDR irradiation is possible, providing one of the first in situ measurements of radiation chemistry in patients. In parallel, recent advances in fast in vitro radiation chemistry assays indicate that UHDR irradiation alters radical yields, favoring increased production of solvated electrons and reduced hydroxyl radical mediated damage. Taken together, the available data suggest that the FLASH sparing effect arises from an interplay among the delivered dose and dose rate, local oxygen availability, and radiation chemistry, with tissue-specific variation in scavenging, leading to altered biological responses across the CDR-to-UHDR shift.

One of the things they say Jev is bad at is adversarial inputs. Jev is better than LLMs in that instead of asking Jev for a freeform text response, you give Jev a bunch of possible answers to your question, and it gives you the score for each answer. It's basically a pre-trained classifier for "anything you can describe with words", for some values of "anything"
Still, "bad at adversarial inputs" means it's not really suitable for anything that becomes action without an expert gut check.

The chemistry of the young aquifer water is laterally variable and is characterized by excess SO$_4^{2-}$, high $Sr^{2 }$ concentrations above that of modern seawater, high alkalinity, and markedly enriched $\delta^{13}C_{DIC}$ values. Acidic winter rains, formed from $SO_x$ and $NO_x$ gaseous emissions from a nearby power station, leach the dry deposition that accumulated across the dune surface during the dry summers. The acidity also partially dissolves the aragonite sea shells in the dune sands, remnants of a previous marine transgression. As a consequence, this adds $Sr^{2 }$, $Ca^{2 }$ excess, and alkalinity, while leading to enriched $\delta^{13}C_{DIC}$ values, particularly during the winter, at which time the radiocarbon activity in the DIC is observed to decrease.
