Sometimes it's hard to figure out who's culled their office library to stock the free book shelves in the Department. Today it wasn't.

The metaphor a colleague is using to describe allocation of teaching assistants to our massive number of courses is "juggling chickens." Seems appropriately awkward.

Academia is so cooked.
I'm constantly getting emails for courses like this one, which promises to teach you to use GenAI to (a) come up with survey items, and (b) to then *validate* those items. Step (a) is bad enough, but then step (b), which typically involves asking humans to take the survey and then using sophisticated techniques to make sure it's measuring what you want it to, is replaced by piping the survey into the computer and treating the output text as meanigful res…

Relates 💯 to student use of LLMs for academic work. We have tech now that can take the gaming out of games, or the learning out of academia, and just give you the Goodhart’s Law version of either one.…

At a time of mounting political violence and shrinking civil rights,
the promise of civility and bridge-building is appealing.
Donors have flocked to finance these initiatives,
while universities looking for a fix to relentless controversy have eagerly embraced them.
“At a surface level, who could be against civility?”
said Bethany Moreton, a historian at Dartmouth College
whose forthcoming book focuses on the so-called “culture wars” in academia.

What a day! Spent 3 hours with a MA student to finish our pilot experiment for her research project (it’s launched!), meeting 1 with former current PhD students on paper edits, meeting 2a b with another current PhD student on paper edits slides for a talk (different topic), meeting 3 with a future PhD student and their second supervisor on “what it means to do a PhD”, then 7 meetings with students on their term paper topics. 😅 All made possible by the fact that virtually all of German academia is on vacation, so I received a single digit number of actionable emails today #academicChatter

"Jedes CV lebt nicht nur von Storytelling, sondern ist Storytelling. Dies mag manche überraschen; für diejenigen aber, die schon einmal über ihrem eigenen CV gesessen haben, insbesondere einem CV in Academia (also in der akademischen Welt) dürfte es nichts Neues sein. Aus Zufällen – oder ist es doch der Klassenhintergrund? – wird eine Ausbildung, aus Brüchen wird Entwicklung, aus Unsicherheiten Konsequenz."

All this meets a society who has basically lost patience with academia. This kind of long term ivory tower thinking, you know "My results will be useful in 200 years ... or never!!" will be accepted less and less.
To stay afloat we need to up our game in every respect!
We must train people to be the most competent person in the room, critical thinking beyond the boundaries of just algebra or just math!
And then we still need to hope that society wants competent people...

Judith Curry is possibly the most confusing and infuriating scientist in the entire climatological arena. She contributed to major understandings around the changes in the jet stream, the Arctic, and other processes that helped explain the impact climate change has already had on our day to day weather.
But then she left academia and essentially became a mouthpiece for Neo-denialism, claiming others were being “alarmist” and that while CO2 was the main cause, we really shouldn’t be spending money on reducing emissions.
Her final blog announcing its retirement is an interesting combination of declaring victory, mostly thanks to Trump and his acolytes (like Carney) who have pivoted fully into the arms of the fossil fuel industry, and declaring she was tired of it all and just wants to be in her garden and stop the flow of now $16,000 (!!) to maintain her Wordpress blog for the past 15 years.
She has done real damage to efforts to stop CO2 emissions. But another part of me wonders if this is an admission of guilt. Very often people come to a point, even subconsciously, where they realize they’re in with the wrong crowd.
I wonder if she has had that moment with Trump. She probably thinks it’s all irrelevant and out of her hands now. Other players, namely the oil industry, Trump, Putin, etc. will decide what happens and scientists like her will have no impact.
I am glad she is tapping out, as so many deniers inevitably do, but it is clear she is doing it because she thinks she’s won, and that is very very bad for the world.
