Canada’s long history with public service media offers a useful model for thinking about how AI could serve the public.
A publicly funded AI system could draw on public-domain materials, government datasets and openly licensed cultural content. It could be offered as an open-source system, making it widely available to researchers, developers and everyday users alike.
“As we consider these three risks, we don’t have to speculate about how AI data centers might affect Massachusetts. Consider Ireland, a country with a similar population size, where AI has driven a data center boom. Warehouses full of servers are on pace to use one-third of Ireland’s electricity, drawing from fossil-fuel power plants and wind farms alike. That keeps old, dirty plants on the grid, sucks up renewable energy that otherwise would help replace fossil fuels, and drives up costs fo…

So I've read a lot of both academic and "popular" criticism of AI; spanning decades from the 1940s to now.
I think both things are good and proper and needed.
And further than that I posit that you actually need at least some bombastic and "flashy" writers in order to reach more people
What's kind of funny is that in many of the academic critiques of AI the authors comment on how their colleagues came belligerent and hostile towards them because "they aren't writing seriously"—this is found all over Weizenbaum, Dreyfus, Anders, etc.
