Sun acquired the design from Cray Research and its Cray Superserver 6400. But: Cray didn't do the design itself, it came to Cray with another acquisition: Floating Point Systems. You don't have to like numbers to appreciate Statistics Canada, aka StatsCan. Jean Talon could be considered Canada's first official statistician when he arrived in North America in 1665 on a mission for King Louis XIV to conduct Canada's first census in 1666. In 1918, the Statistics Act created the Dominion Bureau of Statistics, a national statistics office that ultimately would become Statistics Canada. Besides conducting the Census of Population and the Census of Agriculture every five years, StatCan has more than 450 active surveys on virtually all aspects of life in Canada. Results are published twice a month and can be accessed via The Daily web page.
One of my favourite web pages is Canada's Population Clock (real-time model). It's fascinating to watch, and our population increased by 11 while I typed this post.

Dreamt I saw the flickering ghost of Roy Ross in a video of a show I attended. Some middle school friends of mine were a three-piece called TARP, sounding like a cross between Ascension (aka Stefan Jaworzyn/Tony Irving) and Dead C. I tried to do a longer time lapse video by putting the same cell phone in the window, looking down at the backyard (aka the alley). The goal was to get a full twenty four hour cycle over ten seconds of video. Apparently putting the phone into energy-saver mode was not sufficient. Once it's back up to 100%, maybe I should put it into airplane mode and add a battery pack. 🤷♂️

Listened to half of the digital foundry video. The steam machine, AKA GabeCube, will have 16G of replaceable sodimm (laptop) memory.
Video memory it's probably soldered and a bit anemic, but (my guess) if the GPU can read system memory fast enough, it might even work out just fine! Ray tracing consumes a lot of extra video memory, so that's probably the biggest concern.
We'll see, I'm definitely interested to see where this goes!

And this is working, but it's slow progress.
Mastodon in particular has UX problems that will be very hard to overcome that prevent mass adoption, foremost is that actual conversations (aka replies) are unreliable and slow due to the way posts are distributed. Quote post support was a huge first step to remedy this. I hope we'll see more updates on it.
Bluesky got a big chunk of former Twitter users, especially in some niches like for scientists and activists; they have great performance, reliable threading and replies and really amazing featuers like fully custom feeds—but suffer from intransparent moderation and frankly insufferable leadership (still leagues better than Twitter or Facebook though).
(There's more than these, but these are what I use.)
