🌈 Bacteria spin rainbow-colored, sustainable textiles
#bacteria

OTD in 1977 Carl Woese and George Fox redrew the tree of life.
They proposed a third “urkingdom”
—the “archaebacteria”
—in addition to eukaryotes and bacteria.
Woese later called this taxon “Archea.”
AFAIK, he didn’t publish his famous tree diagram until the late 80s.

Experimentally co-evolved E. coli and yeast achieve stable coexistence — and the coevolved E. coli, but not the yeast, is able to resist invasion by other bacterial strains
doi.org/10.1007/s00248-025-026

Fig 3C from the linked article, showing three rows of 12 panels, each with a graph of cell density over time for 7-day competition experiments with coevolved E coli and yeast plus competitor bacteria. Different competitor strains are in each column of the 3x12 grid, and each row gives results for experiments with ancestral, 1000-generation coevolved, or 4000-generation coevolved E coli. The ancestral E coli fails to resist invasion of many competitors, but the coevolved strains resist most of t…

Why was I today years old when I learned about bio-photovoltaics?
This is a technology which instead of using silicon wafers as the basis for photovoltaic cells, uses a sandwich comprising
1. A transparent window, to allow sunlight in;
2. Algae, to photosynthesise sugars;
3. A membrane to keep the algae separate from the bacteria;
4. Bacteria, which consume sugar and generate electricity;
5. A filter, to allow the biological components to breathe.

Bats are one of the few animals that I genuinely don't enjoy being around.... but I still want them to thrive!
This is really great news that a Canadian researcher might have found a treatment for white-nose syndrome!
" B.C.-based scientist Cori Lausen, nicknamed Bat Lady by her peers, believes a probiotic formula may be capable of saving them. This cocktail is a blend of four bacterial strains that suppress the fungus. These bacteria are naturally found in some bats, but not all. ”

Weekend #Plankton Factoid 🦠🦐
Tintinnids ("tinkling bells") are ciliates found in fresh and saltwater known for their characteristic vase-shaped shell called a lorica. These are formed of tough proteins, incorporating minerals from the water and vary considerably by species. The shell offers protection and optimizes feeding on phytoplankton, bacteria and flagellates. These small pro…

Recipes are full of directions like “when the top starts to brown” or “when it is firm to the touch but not hard.”
Very often, the thing the directions are taking about is not the actual important trait, but a •proxy• for something important you can’t see directly. Maybe the inside of the bread is fully baked when the top starts to brown. Maybe dangerous bacteria are killed when the quiche is firm to the touch. (I am making this up; don’t @ me about quiche.)
Proxy indicators, heuristics, rules of thumb, call them what you like: they’re essential in cooking.
