So, on a lighter note, there might’ve been karaoke at the local pub yesterday and I might’ve have sung a few songs… including (for the first time ever) a song in Turkish (Şımarık by Tarkan) and one of my favourite songs from one of my favorite musicals: Pity the Child from Chess.
Sound quality: typical pub karaoke quality :)

Saw a clip of a preacher retelling an anecdote about a chess grandmaster being shown a painting of the devil having apparently defeated his opponent at chess for his soul. The grandmaster studied the painting and saw that there was still a path to avoid a checkmate. So the painting contained a secret inspirational message of hope!
Yet when people accurately model the game state from Die Schachspieler and feed it into chess analysis algorithms, Mephistopheles always wins

"For Levy and Newborn, the stakes were clear, and the title of the first chapter of the book says it all: “The Challenge is World Champion Kasparov”. Said chapter describes in detail the match between a first iteration of a chess supercomputer by IBM, the less well-known “Deep Thought”. It was a strong contender, having defeated quite a few grandmasters along the way (including the aforementioned Levy), but was no match for Kasparov in August 1989."

Child is abroad till January, chess.com app is pretty great.
Can do games with multi days between moves allowed so we can dip in and out between things and has a nice messaging feature to keep up to date.
Still surprised by the level of ability todays 8yo kids have vs when I was his age, I guess we were just not challenged to our abilities

Finished reading "Intermezzo" by Sally Rooney.
Two brothers wallow in their grief after their father's death. Peter, the lawyer, and Ivan, the chess player, struggle to connect across their ten-year age gap. Beautiful prose, but the endless navel-gazing introspection drags!
Ivan's growth is compelling, but the women—Margaret, Sylvia, Naomi—remain underdeveloped. Add to it a too-neat ending that undercuts the existential hand-wringing?

the "woke games detector"'s ULTRAKILL problem: there are some games they don't like just because the developer is vaguely progressive and the fandom is largely queer and makes a lot gay fanart of the characters but they have to come up with some 4d chess problem with the game itself

screenshot of the woke games detector, ULTRAKILL is listed as woke for the following reasons: Contains overtly pro-LGBTQ+ messaging. The word 'gay' is spelled out by three mannequins posing in flag symbols. Level 5-S contains a reference to the Blåhaj plushie, a pro-trans symbol.

The Bongcloud Attack (standard king's pawn advancement, then move the king up) is possibly the worst opening in #chess. In this tournament coverage video, it is used by one grandmaster against another. This was dubbed the "Bongcloud Countergambit: Hotbox Variation"

Claude Sonnet 4 describes the image as: "This appears to be a scene from the British science fiction television series "Blake's 7," set in what looks like a tavern or underground meeting place. The setting has a rustic, medieval-like atmosphere with wooden tables, stone walls, and various props scattered around including what appears to be a chess set on the table. The lighting is dim and atmospheric, typical of the show's distinctive visual style from the late 1970s/early 1980s.
