Make things. Make _personal scale_ things. The tools help bridge the truly high barriers we've managed to put in in the tech industry.
This will have a lot of problems! We don't have collective knowledge for this yet / again. The people with Sysadmin Mindset have been burned out or subsumed into the Cloud Computing machine.
But there's a chance here to take the web better places. We should take it.

This is a thoughtful and thought-provoking piece. Will we chose the ease of compliance or the friction of engagement as AI becomes increasingly prevalent also in our democratic institutions?
For me, I chose friction, as compliance has never been my nature. But my fear is I am in a minority, and the majority is quite happy to outsource decisions and cognitive work to AI.

I explained something for a friend in a simple way, and I think it's worth paraphrasing again here.
You cannot create a system that constrains itself. Any constraint on a system must be external to the system, or that constraint can be ignored or removed. That's just how systems work. Every constitution for every country claims to do this impossible thing, a thing proven is impossible almost 100 years ago now. Gödel's loophole has been known to exist since 1947.
Every constitution in the world, every "separation of powers" and set of "checks and balances," attempts to do something which is categorically impossible. Every government is always, at best, a few steps away from authoritarianism. From this, we would then expect that governments trand towards authoritarianism. Which, of course, is what we see historically.
Constraints on power are a formality, because no real controls can possibly exist. So then democratic processes become sort of collective classifiers that try to select only people who won't plunge the country into a dictatorship. Again, because this claim of restrictions on powers is a lie (willful or ignorant, a lie reguardless) that classifier has to be correct 100% of the time (even assuming a best case scenario). That's statistically unlikely.
So as long as you have a system of concentrated power, you will have the worst people attracted to it, and you will inevitably have that power fall into the hands of one of the worst possible person.
Fortunately, there is an alternative. The alternative is to not centralize power. In the security world we try to design systems that assume compromise and minimize impact, rather than just assuming that we will be right 100% of the time. If you build systems that maximially distribute power, then you minimize the impact of one horrible person.
Now, I didn't mention this because we're both already under enough stress, but...
Almost 90% of the nuclear weapons deployed around the world are in the hands of ghoulish dictators. Only two of the countries with nuclear weapons not straight up authoritarian, but they're not far off. We're one crashout away from steralizing the surface of the Earth with nuclear hellfire. Maybe countries shouldn't exist, and *definitely* multiple thousands of nuclear weapons shouldn't exist and shouldn't all be wired together to launch as soon as one of these assholes goes a bit too far sideways.

Collective Electronic Polarization Drives Charge Asymmetry at Oil-Water Interfaces

Abstract: Why kinetically stable oil droplets in water spontaneously acquire a negative charge remains one of the most vigorously debated questions in interfacial science. Here, we combine neural-network based deep potential molecular dynamics with a data-driven and information theory approach to probe the real-space electron density at an extended decane-water interface. While decane-water clusters show nearly symmetric forward and backward charge transfer (CT) and thus negligible net CT, the extended interface displays a systematic electronic asymmetry, yielding a net CT from water to the hydrocarbon phase producing an average surface charge density of $\sim0.006~e^{-}\,\mathrm{nm}^{-2}$ on the oil phase. This imbalance is accompanied by much larger intra-phase self-polarization, particularly within the hydrocarbon phase, demonstrating that collective many-body polarization dominates the interfacial electronic response. Structural analysis reveals an asymmetry between forward C--H$\cdots$O and backward O--H$\cdots$C motifs, providing a microscopic origin for a net CT from one phase to the other. Curiously, both the water O--H and decane C--H covalent bonds incur subtle contractions which originate from a response to the charge-separation layers at the interface. These features are fully consistent with the weak improper hydrogen-bonds forming at the oil-water interface that results in blue-shifts of the C-H modes.

A minimal wake-vortex model explains formation flight of flapping birds

Abstract: Collective patterns of motion emerge across biological taxa: insects swarm, fish school, and birds flock. In particular, large migratory birds form strikingly ordered V-shaped formations, which experiments and direct numerical simulations have demonstrated provide substantial energetic benefits during long-distance flight. However, the precise aerodynamic and morphological mechanisms underlying these benefits remain unclear. In this work, we develop a reduced-order model of the wake-vortex interactions between two flapping birds flying in tandem. The model retains essential unsteady flapping dynamics while remaining computationally tractable. By optimizing over a six-dimensional state space, which comprises the follower's three-dimensional relative position and three independent flapping parameters, we identify the energetically optimal leader-follower configuration of northern bald ibises. The predicted optimum agrees quantitatively with live-bird measurements. Because of its simplicity, the model allows for direct interrogation of the physical mechanisms responsible for this optimum. In particular, it isolates precisely how the follower's wing kinematics interact with the leader's wake to enhance aerodynamic efficiency. The model predicts an 11% reduction in total mechanical power for a follower in formation flight -- consistent with experimental estimates -- and shows that this saving arises from reductions in both induced and profile power, dominated by decreased profile power enabled primarily through reduced flapping amplitude and, secondarily, reduced upstroke flexion. These results provide a mechanistic explanation for the structure of V-formations and offer new insight into the aerodynamic principles governing collective flight.

I've mentioned it before, and I'm sure I will again, but, as much as there's a reason why I reject Christianity, there were also a lot of good things. Churches have governing bodies (with varying degrees of democratic representation) that guide the ministry (preaching and actions) as well as managing logistics (building maintenance, accounting, etc). This provides opportunities for self-governed collective action.
Quakers are the most radical in terms of this, and are basically anarchists. Quaker circles often meet at people's houses and can be as small as 3 people. There is often no leadership. A Quaker service could easily just be everyone sitting in a circle and someone talking at one point.
I grew up in a Presbyterian church, and one of my first jobs (at 11 or 12) was landscaping there. Within the church there were a lot of different trades, which meant that you could volunteer time and learn basically any kind of maintenance. Basically everything that needed to be done was done in-house. This also meant that if you needed a plumber, an electrician, etc, that you could pick one from within the church.
I remember painting the church, learning how to paint, with a bunch of other members of the congregation at a work party. I also remember being volunteered for child care during choir. There were a few rooms around that were used for different things, such as music practice. But these rooms could be made available for any type of community activity. This can actually include community organizing. In fact, Seattle GDC was offered an occasional space for organizing in a church (we didn't take it, but appreciated the offer), and that same church hosted a lot of other community events. I actually went to a queer relationships skills class once hosted in a church, which was great.
What I'm saying is that churches often act as a kind of parallel society up-to-and-including acting as dual power structures....
Facts didn’t build this collective delusion, and facts won’t puncture it.
So yeah, I’m trying to stay diligent about facts where facts matter. I’m trying to stay clear in my own head about what we •know• with high confidence as distinct from what merely seems •likely•.
And I’m also studying — with careful attention, as a serious matter — what popular imagination is doing to the “100% vibes” foundation of Trumpism. Popular imagination. Not the facts. The vibes.

Deep learning of committor and explainable artificial intelligence analysis for identifying reaction coordinates

Abstract: In complex molecular systems, the reaction coordinate (RC) that characterizes transition pathways is essential to understand underlying molecular mechanisms. This review surveys a framework for identifying the RC by applying deep learning to the committor, which provides the most reliable measure of the progress along a transition path. The inputs to the neural network are collective variables (CVs) expressed as functions of atomic coordinates of the system, and the corresponding RC is predicted as the output by training the network on the committor as the learning target. Because deep learning models typically operate in a black-box manner, it is difficult to determine which input variables govern the predictions. The incorporation of eXplainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) techniques enables quantitative assessment of the contributions of individual input variables to the predictions. This approach allows the identification of CVs that play dominant roles and demonstrates that the committor distribution on the surface using important CVs is separated by well-defined boundaries. The framework provides an explainable deep learning strategy for assigning a molecular mechanism from the RC and is applicable to a wide range of complex molecular systems.

So the collective trauma reaction against the Church, so deep for those of us coming from the tradition of the European Left, alienates us from those indigenous comrades of ours who refused to let their identities be erased. It alienates us from Black and Latin American comrades who, in some cases, have subverted that same religion from a tool of oppression to a tool of resistance.
It also alienates us from our pagan, Jewish, and even Christian ancestors. Rather than a rejection of the genocides, crusades, and pogroms carried out to solidify the hegemony of the Church, a chauvinistic atheism affirms it under another name. Likewise it affirms the patriarchs who burned witches and destroyed midwifery to shift power over to male doctors.
The "Enlightenment" paradigm of "Reason," that led through secularism to the anti-religious antagonism of Bill Maher and the New Atheists, is laced with an Islamophobia and anti-Semitism rooted in the same church they claim to reject. And anyone who has been paying attention can see that it opens the door to the far right anti-Semitism and Islamophobia that also grows from that same root...
