Just finished "Look on the Bright Side" by Lily Williams and Karen Schneemann. Sequel to "Go With the Flow" about a group of highschool friends who become activists to get their school to stock free mensuration products. I really enjoyed the first book, and this one was also great, with some discussion of LGBTQI issues and a but more focus on romance. As with the first book, there's a layer of explicit pedagogical material included that makes summer scenes a but less natural, but that's fine and useful. As with the first book, it models making & growing past mistakes, which is great.
I find myself drawing a comparison to "Does my Body Offend You?" by Mayra Cuevas. Both deal with highschool friends doing feminist activism to change their schools, by where Cuevas deals more directly with topics like sex, sexual assault, and racism, Williams & Schneemann avoid those topics while still including a lot of the same friendship struggles.

Totally normal night:
1. Scratching the cat.
2. The first continuous sleep, ending with a #nightmare. I've dreamt that my first return train was delayed, and I'm likely to be stuck in Głogów. On top of that, the train looked looked like a nightmare contraption, with a sequence of cubic compartments with no seats, and weirdly shaped holes in the walls instead of doors.
3. Toilet.
4. Checking blood sugar, just in case.
5. Looking for a spot in the bed that's free of sweat.
6. Scratching the cat.
7. A series of nightmares. The most interesting one was about getting up in the morning, in middle of a gale. The mains voltage was so low I couldn't turn the lights on, and instead of getting myself ready to go out, I was trying hard to measure it, helping myself with a flashlight.
My working theory is that these are side effects of my current medication. One week to go.

Content warning: NY Times on how ChatGPT causes delusions

This is yet another article that chronicles an LLM's bad effects on the psyche of a vulnerable person.
I hate the LLM's "Yes, great thought! Should we explore this more?" flattery. Every quote in that article feels alien in its tone - or obviously cult-like - to me.
But pride comes before the fall. So I'll rather not use the sycophantic brain-rot machine lest I risk getting drawn into delusions myself...

Content warning: BiCon coming up, Fri 25 to Sun 27 July 2025, Nottingham and online

BiCon comes to Nottingham this Friday!
It's a masking-friendly, though not mask-required, event, in a venue which is said to be pretty good for air quality.
There's also an online-only option, which I went to myself last year when the in-person side wasn't in Nottingham. We had a nice little group being companionable on the Zoom, with some of the in-person sessions running as hybrid.
You don't have to be bi to go - just bi-friendly and trans-inclusive. Typically it does include some non-bi people who just like the vibes :-)
Sliding-scale admission prices:
- in-person weekend tickets £65 down to £20
- in-person day tickets £40 down to £10
- online weekend tickets £20 down to £4.
Venue this year is two of the buildings belonging to the girls' high school, in between the Forest and the Arboretum. Nearest tram stop is High School. Nearest bus lines are brown, green, yellow, and purple.
There's usually a variety of session options in the day: some talky and some not; some bi-themed, some unrelated. In the evenings there'll be social space. Some people will go and march as a group in Notts Pride on the Saturday. I'm going to host an online pre-meet on the Wednesday evening.
Myself I've booked for the weekend, but in reality I might only make it to the online-Wednesday-pre-meet and the Friday, esp if I do go to Notts Pride on the Saturday. I might be all used up by Saturday night. (Even pre-covid I might've run out of steam by then :-) ) But if I didn't come in on the Sunday, I probably would still join in at least a little bit online.
More below on what I'm planning to contribute!
Feel free to ping me if you have questions :-)
