There are all sorts of complex practices and laws around churches, because "religious freedom" is really a minefield. It's not that the state cares about the law, but that the narrative of the US is deeply intertwined with the narrative of "religious freedom" and "escaping religious persecution." (I probably don't need to tell anyone that the people "escaping religious persecution" were some of the absolute worst humans on the planet who were not being persecuted but wanted to be free to persecute others... but I digress.)
It is not aligning with the law that matters, nor any other sort of legal justification for their authority. Authority comes from a complex memetic fabric of woven ideas. This fabric can be attacked, these threads can be pulled out, and eventually the fabric unravels and the authority collapses.
When central authority collapses, dual power institutions pick up the pieces. They replace the faltering authority. Today, as the US government is frantically burning itself down, corporations and churches are the two most developed institutions prepared to fill that void,

Finally finished Hardspace: Shipbreaker just now, and while it's a really great game, the ending is, as expected, disappointing. Not the gameplay part of it, that was great, but the failure to gesture towards anything beyond capitalism in these kinds of games/stories is especially galling when they set themselves up to tackle the issue head on. The high doses of rugged individualism in the ending cinematic are especially jarring. Like, isn't the whole point of the game that the workers deserve rights and freedom? But then you let us know that we specifically have earned our freedom through hard work... It can't be both.
Still a very good game overall, with a completely novel set of mechanics and overall world setup that doesn't center violent conflict as the main mechanic (even though violent conflict does play a part), which is a rarity these days.

"Much of the [French slavery] Code is based on the chilling bargain that slave-trading Catholic countries offered to African captives: They lost their freedom but gained eternal salvation through Christ. Louis felt this to be the keystone of his slave economy. In the English colonies — early Virginia, for example — captives were generally not baptized, because many Protestants believed that Christians could not legitimately be held in bondage."

When designers champion AI tools, we are not making ourselves layoff-proof. We are reinforcing a system that frames us as unnecessary friction.
If we don't want to serve as janitors for vibe prototypes, We must invest in deliberately designing the service relationships that make up the PDLC.

Personalization systems are actually the AI technology I have the most beef with: I don't think we've fully reckoned with the algorithmic manipulation of information they do. Suddenly the info sphere is not an object you can interrogate, but you become the object, and the infosphere around us is made into a mirror.
Weirdly, LLMs used well are actually _better_ about this because they're somewhat more able to be interrogated (though naive questioning is not probing so much why as one would hope). But the breadth of the corpus and the freedom we have to query within it are currently new capabilities. Not to say that some companies aren't well on their way to researching how to personalize that into a reflection again. Google must be stopped, and I trust OpenAI just as little. People's chats still end up adding quite a reflective lens on things, but the raw access is still there if we want to make use of it.

We don’t make space for flat-Earthers. We also do not make space for people who argue (explicitly or implicitly) that some of our students deserve to be murdered.
The reasons for those two things are not identical — the latter also has to do, for example, with the fact that education requires physical safety — but they rest on a shared principle: free speech means freedom to ignore speech, and freedom to choose which speech we amplify and how. Making such choices is, in fact, the •duty• of upholding free speech.

Why this is all relevant to the OP is that there is actually nothing preventing us from exploiting these same vulnerabilities (and doing so far more effectively). The (illusion of The) Satanic Temple has already given us some vision of what that could look like. We can imagine a religious institution that actually challenges power in the way TST claims to do. We could imagine an institution that is more radical. We could imagine an institution so dangerous it actually forces the state to choose between it's own survival and alienating liberals by (more) visibly clamping down on freedom of religion.
One could imagine an anarchist or solar punk religion that intentionally builds an alternative society within the shell of the old, one that recognizes the validity of other religious sects (like, for example, Quakers) who are doing similar things.
While there is a very interesting spiritual element to #CultPunk. I think there's also a very interesting set of radical opportunities that we have long since ignored....
