It's the worst known greenhouse gas, and a factory in Southern Germany emits a lot of it 🌍🏡💨🏭
Sulfur Hexafluoride/SF6 is a gas that has been used in Nike shoes (til 2006), Magnesium production, soundproof windows, and electric switchgear. It has an extreme impact on the climate. Studies have warned that atmospheric measurements and reported SF6 emissions don't add up. Now it looks like a major source of these discrepancies was found. A Solvay factory in Bad Wimpfen emits far mor…

Drilling for 'cleaner' natural gas in the North Sea - with low methane leakage - will only reduce global greenhouse gas emissions if it keeps an equivalent amount of 'dirty' natural gas - e.g. US shale gas - in the ground. Which remains to be seen.

📈 Study shows the Paris Agreement is working, but not well enough to offset economic growth

Nuclear power has no special virtues that could possibly justify overpaying for energy like this. Instead of asking—as so many do—how to make nuclear cheaper and faster after decades of real-world proof that it’s nigh-impossible to do (outside of China), we should be asking—as virtually no one does—why anyone even wants to build them.
My best guess:
Was there a massive leak of a dangerous greenhouse gas in Iceland🇮🇸 in 2011 - or was it just a data📈 reporting error? European emission databases show that the Norðuršl aluminium factory🏭 in Iceland released 60 tons of SF₆ in 2011 — but no such emissions in any other year. It's so much that it is hard to believe this really happened. And that is not the only odd thing I found in emission databases.

Oh great. That'd be two cumulative and largely irreversible problems reinforcing each other, through plankton. Reduce plastic waste, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Housing (for) a post-growth world: A manifesto
by Anna Pagani, Hans Volmary, Daniel Fitzpatrick* Providing housing for all is central to building any future. Yet, the system put in place to deliver housing globally has been relentlessly driven by growth imperatives. The consequences are far reaching: unhealthy, unsafe, overcrowded, over- or underheated, and inadequate housing, which is paralleled by the soaring greenhouse gas emissions and biodiversity loss tied to the…

The article that highlighted a powerful greenhouse gas in Nike shoes in 1992 🌍👟
I recently wrote about high SF6 emissions from a factory in Germany. SF6 is the most powerful known greenhouse gas, and I also dug a bit into its history.
Until 2006, Nike used SF6 in its shoes. I found sources mentioning that this was brought to Nike's attention by a German environmental magazine in 1992. I initially couldn't find out which magazine it was, so I asked my newsletter readers.
