I hope humankind doesn’t learn the hard way that you can’t eat, drink, or breathe shares of ExxonMobil.

If copyright is real then the AI machines owe the artists of humankind (which is to say all of us) more money than exists in the banking systems of the planet.
If copyright is not real then the companies that trained those models have no right to exclusive ownership of the weights.
I bet somehow the law conspires to make it the worst of either option.

There is a broad understanding for the need to fly less, as the aviation industry accounts for more than 2% of global CO2 emissions. Yet the data centres we depend on for computing already account for more than that, by some estimates up to 4% of global CO2 emissions.

But there are few calls or campaigns to compute less. If anything, it would appear that humankind has decided the best way forward is to compute more.

We are quicky becoming a generation of… generation.

"#Spring was moving in the air above and in the earth below and around him, penetrating even his dark and lowly little house with its spirit of #DivineDiscontent and longing"
Mole, reacting to the first days of spring in

An early morning photograph of sun on abundant grass, a model of the globe cupped in outstretched human hands which, depending on the viewer, might invoke feelings of hope for the future, the possibility that despite the odds the climate crisis might be softened. A sense of freshness and newness, with humankind's role being to nurture our planet together in harmony.

People have been imagining science fiction scenarios of machines rebelling against humankind. I think that in reality, we gave up a long time ago, and gave away most of our lives to machines already.
People have been imagining machines fighting people in direct combat. In fact, machines have been lethally poisoning us for decades already.
People have been attributing this to the emergence of self-conscious artificial intelligence in machines, and have been giving agency to the extermination of humankind. That's a comforting thought. Much nicer than the realization that we're doing this to ourselves, in the name of comfort and status.
— These thoughts are sponsored by yet another town where the streets are filled with parked cars, with more cars in garages and front yards, and yet more driving the streets. The photo is from another place, though.
The future won't be filed with artificial life of humanoid robots. It's going to be filled by car wrecks.

Yesterday we went to see Moonwalkers at the Ligthroom near King's Cross, London. A totally amazing experience!
I knew from reviews that it would feel immersive, but with high resolution images on the entirety of every wall it still took me by surprise. Really recommended!
Go early so you can stay in for the next showing and watch it again. 😀
