I Can't Stop Loving You / Madeleine Peyroux
composer: Don Gibson
I've made up my mind
To live in memories of the lonesome times
(I can't stop wanting you)
It's useless to say
So I'll just live my life in dreams of yesterday (dreams of yesterday)

If you were in Carol's place in #Pluribus, what would you do? I'd probably have the talk of my life with the entire world's consciousness and then ask it to undo itself 😀 I mean, we know Carol has something in her that is a potential treatment for the virus. We also know the hive mind knows how to remove it and assimilate her. But it can't because that would make her unh…

This is very telling but my favorite super power would be to stop time. Not for any creepy reasons, but rather because I sometimes believe there's so much happening and I'd love to take the adequate time to respond to it all or process it. Just take one day and do everything I have been wanting to do and that has been piling up in my mind for years!
The biggest tragedy of life is that there will always be too little time for it all.

A book is a set of possibilities.

I read this in a short story in the November/December 2023 issue of Asimov’s Science Fiction. The story was titled, The Four Last Things, by Cristopher Rowe. I don’t know why, but the phrase has attached itself in my mind. In the story, the phrase is almost a throwaway line, spoken by a character to an AI in answer to the question, what is a book? It’s like watching a meme invading my mind in real time. I can almost feel tendrils of connection spreading into, …

I’ve worked over the past year to reduce the amount of noise in my consciousness on a daily basis.
By that I mean - information noise, not literal sounds “noise”. (That problem was solved long ago by some good earplugs and noise canceling earphones.)
I’ve gotten used to spending less time on social media, regularly blocking most apps on my devices (anything with a feed news, most work communication apps, etc.), putting my phone and other devices aside for extended periods of time. Often go to work places with my iPad explicitly having its WiFi turned off and selecting cafes that don’t offer WiFi at all.
Negotiated better boundaries at work and in personal life where I exchange messages with people less often but try to make those interactions more meaningful, and people rarely expect me to respond to requests in less than 24 hours. Spent a lot of time setting up custom notification settings on all apps that would allow it, so I get fewer pings. With software, choosing fewer cloud-based options and using tools that are simple and require as few interruptions as possible.
Accustomed myself to lower-tech versions of doing things I like to do: reading on paper, writing by hand, drawing in physical sketchbooks, got a typewriter for typing without a screen. Choosing to call people on audio more, trying to make more of an effort to see people in person. Going to museums to look at art instead of browsing Pinterest. Defaulting to the library when looking for information.
I’m commenting on this now for two reasons:
1. I am pretty proud of myself for how much I’ve actually managed to reduce the constant stream of modern life esp. as a remote worker in tech!
2. Now that I’ve reached a breaking point of reducing enough noise that it’s NOTICEABLE - I am struck by the silence. I don’t know what to do with it. I don’t know how to navigate it and fill it. I made this space to be able to read and write and think more deeply - for now I feel stuck in limbo where I’m just reacquainting myself with the concept of having any space in my mind at all.

For some web sites... NO, I WILL NOT TURN MY AD BLOCKER OFF. You want to make money then show me generic ads. I will not allow you to snoop and pull all of that info to sell. Block me from reading? Fine, I will go elsewhere.
Keep this in mind. How do they know you are running ad blockers? Must be those snooping scripts trying so hard to siphon all my info.

The Conjuring: Last Rites review: This was a mind-numbing corporate séance packaged as “horror.” Boring as hell.
Why tf do people bow down to this mass-produced ghost story machine? It's like, they summoned capitalism itself onto the screen, empty, repetitive, and designed to keep the herd lulled.
Sitting in that cinema felt like half my soul was on life-support. Horror’s supposed to rattle authority, not tuck you back into your consumer coma.
I found it awfully boring.…

I was recently asked where I would see useful applications of CCS. My answer was: Cement🧱🪨 and Biomethane🐄🌱🏭
Most won't be surprised that I said Cement. Yet, Biomethane is not what people usually have in mind. But bear with me, it makes a lot of sense.
CCS is a controversial topic to begin with. That has a lot to do with the fact that many see it - often rightfully so - as a delay strategy by the fossil fuel🛢️ industry.

It boggles my mind how it is just impossible to pay for a digitally delivered version of AmigaOS 3.2.X so I can use it in an emulator or on my PiStorm. The sold formats are physical roms, cd and compact flash (with weird restrictions on how to buy the latter). All massive detours for my purposes. I guess it’s 3.1 or 3.9. #amiga

There's a small Japanese-French bakery in our hood run by a mother-daughter team (the best bakery in Toronto, IMHO). Everything they sell is mind-blowing. The milk bread may be my fav, though their French translation (pain de mie) entirely fails to give it the credit it deserves. Their milk bread is to even the best sandwich bread what handmade Swiss chocolate is to Hershey's.

self esteem issues are the mind-killer. self esteem issues are the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my self esteem issues. I will permit them to pass over me and through me. and when they have gone past I will turn the inner eye to see their path. where the self esteem issues have gone there will be nothing. only I will remain. and hopefully i'll be cute

They say a change is as good as being arrested, or something like that, and being reckless (and retired) I upgraded my vintage laptop to #Ubuntu 25.10 because why not, it was already broken from a few upgrades ago, and it was already clear #plasma on #x11 with my Radeon 570 was, well, not fun.
So down the list I go. Those of you on Mac or that other O/S ("little&soft"?) won't understand, but I went through each of the various desktops, just to see, not expecting a lot given my hardware.
Well, Ubuntu on Wayland works now, but, egad, it is ugly. Gnome and its Classic look, well, almost the same. One of the others is just a blank screen, but remember, my machine was already broken.
I ended up in #xfce which I hadn't used in, omg, never mind, only I'm thinking, hey old man, learn some new tricks! Need to add panel and some widgets and…
why is my panel's outline slowly blinking red? (left it in Add mode and buried the dialog box)

Voting in the UK Green party elections is half over. Too late to join the party and vote, and sounds like Zack is very likely to win.
Which is good. I voted for him.
I think the job-share rule is important and that any job should be possible to share between workers. But in the case of the "leader", which is literally the face of the party, having two faces is difficult in the public hive mind. Even with a united front, it's litterally two faced.
But mostly my vote was just for Zack, and would have likely voted for him in a job-share too.
He's very personable and seems to know how to talk to the public and express not just environmental issues but other green issues like inequality and war and how your enemy is not a boat of refugees but the concentration of power in the hands of maniacs both political and corporate.
I confess I gave up trying to read anything about the candidates and cast a vote about half way down all the other jobs being elected. I'm just adding noise. I dunno who any of these people are or even what the job entails most of the time and there's too many all at once. Should stagger them weekly or something.
Anyway here's Zack on Mark Steel's sweary podcast being brilliant on the issues and how to explain them better than I can.
I love Mark Steel too. Miss the sketches things it used to have in the newish revised entirely-an-interview format.

I’ve been getting beta reader feedback on my #novel and it’s the most magical thing hearing how other people have formed their own relationships to and feelings towards my characters.
I made up these characters in my own mind, they didn’t exist a few months ago, and now they are real to not just me but other living, breathing humans.
Artistic creation feels like one of the closest ways we have of approaching a sense of something almost divine.
