Abstract: This paper presents a novel approach for magnetic modulation of deposition morphology in an evaporating ferrofluid droplet. The magnetic field strength and ferrofluid concentration are kept unchanged, while the actuation frequencies are varied from 0.016 Hz to 5 Hz. In the absence of a magnetic field, a coffee-ring formation is observed and consistent with previous studies\cite{deegan1997capillary,deegan2000contact,saroj2019drying}. The application of a time-dependent magnetic field significantly modifies the deposition morphology. The periodic magnetic field induces the formation of multiple concentric rings during evaporation. The number of rings initially increases with increasing actuation frequency of the electromagnet. However, beyond a critical actuation frequency ($f_c = 0.2\,\text{Hz}$), the number of rings decreases. At higher actuation frequencies, magnetic particles preferentially deposit in the central region of the droplet, resulting in suppression of the coffee-ring effect. Additionally, the thickness of the inner rings and the ring spacing decrease with increasing actuation frequency up to critical actuation frequency. The transition from multi-ring formation to coffee-ring suppression is governed by the competition among magnetic forcing, capillary flow, and particle diffusion. The underlying physical mechanisms responsible for droplet dynamics and deposition morphology under periodic magnetic fields are evaluated using scaling arguments. The results demonstrate that diffusive particle transport plays a dominant role in determining the deposition pattern. A non-dimensional magnetic switching number, based on the magnetic perturbation timescale, is introduced as a control parameter to characterize the frequency-dependent deposition behavior.

Abstract: The Heisenberg Lie group $H_3$ is modeled on the differentiable structure of $\mathbb{R}^3$ but equipped with another non-commutative product operation. By fixing the usual metric on the Heisenberg Lie group, this work provides a comprehensive overview of the behavior of magnetic geodesics for any invariant Lorentz force. After writing the magnetic equations, we found symmetries that enable the explicit computation of the magnetic trajectories for any homogeneous exact and non-exact magnetic form. Finally we show that these magnetic trajectories are solutions of a variational problem: we present explicit examples of Lagrangians.

Abstract: For a gas of diatomic particles with a nonzero magnetic moment, the Senftleben-Beenakker effect says that transport can be affected by a magnetic field even when the particles are neutral. As a consequence of the Senftleben-Beenakker effect, two anisotropic odd viscosities become nonvanishing which for large magnetic field are of opposite sign. We solve for the anisotropic odd viscous Stokes flow around the spheroid using the Lorentz reciprocal theorem and show that the forces on oblate and prolate spheroids are such that they can be separated upon undergoing sedimentation in a diatomic gas with a background magnetic field.

Abstract: This course introduces conventional magnets used in particle accelerators, focusing on both normal-conducting copper coil magnets and permanent magnets (PMs). It covers magnet classification, design principles, material selection, and mechanical constraints. Advantages and limitations of PMs compared to copper coil magnets are discussed. Key construction steps and cooling methods are presented. The course also includes magnetic field measurement techniques and quality control. Practical examples from PSI and CERN illustrate the concepts.

Abstract: This course introduces key aspects of superconducting magnet technology in accelerators: basic principles, superconducting materials (NbTi, Nb$_3$Sn, ReBCO), wire and cable architectures, and fabrication methods. Compared to copper or permanent magnets, superconducting systems require cryogenics and complex protection schemes but enable superior performance. Core challenges - like flux pinning, magnetization effects, quench behavior, mechanical forces interception, power tests and magnetic measurements - are addressed through examples of magnets from PSI and CERN.

Abstract: Magnetometry based on diamond nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers has been extensively studied for applications requiring diverse capabilities, spanning from nanometer spatial resolution to subpicotesla sensitivity. Among various applications, diamond magnetometers can demonstrate high sensitivity magnetic sensing within millimeter-scale size for endoscopic applications. However, the trade-off between sensitivity and spatial resolution of diamond magnetometry makes it difficult to achieve such a probe. In this study, we present a millimeter-scale rigid diamond magnetometer probe with enhanced sensitivity via optimizing the optical design. By coupling the frustum diamond with the miniaturized compound parabolic concentrator (CPC) lens, we enhance the fluorescence collection efficiency by 37% within 4 mm diameter, and the achieved sensitivity is 200 pT/Hz1/2 based on the sample with the resonance linewidth of ~8 MHz. With this verified structure, endoscopes with mm-size probe and picotesla sensitivity can be projected for surgical and industrial applications in the future.

Abstract: This study investigates how target geometry and material influence pion and muon production from an 8 GeV proton beam, in support of target-system design for a muon collider demonstrator. A 2 m long, 0.7 m radius solenoid with a 5 T peak magnetic field is used to capture secondary particles, with the target positioned at its center. We examine how variations in target radius, length, and material affect secondary-beam yield and emittance at the solenoid exit. In parallel, we evaluate temperature rise within the target to assess material limitations and guide future work on thermal and structural survivability. The results provide initial intuition for optimizing both particle yield and target durability in muon collider front-end systems.

Abstract: Compact Free-Electron Lasers (FELs) offering broad, continuous spectral tunability are traditionally constrained by fixed-parameter magnetic structures and the necessity for high-energy electron beams. High-gain Harmonic Lasing (HL) has long been proposed as a solution to overcome these limitations; however, a robust experimental verification of this principle has remained absent. Here, we report the first experimental demonstration of high-gain HL. By employing a frequency-tunable electron beam density modulation to dominate the fundamental instability, we achieved sustained FEL amplification at the 3rd and 5th harmonics of the wiggler. The HL mode generated output power comparable to conventional fundamental operation with enhanced stability and narrower spectral bandwidth. Notably, we demonstrate that HL extends the spectral coverage by a factor of two under fixed facility constraints, achieving pulse energies up to 540 {\mu}J. These results establish high-gain HL as a versatile mechanism for advancing compact, wavelength-flexible FEL facilities.

Abstract: This paper presents experimental validation of the homogenized harmonic balance finite element method (HomHBFEM), which we have developed as a dedicated simulation technique for magnets with fast excitation cycles, in particular the fast corrector (FC) magnets for PETRA IV at DESY. The HomHBFEM allows efficient three-dimensional nonlinear eddy-current simulations of laminated magnets at elevated frequencies with a relatively coarse finite element (FE) mesh and without computationally expensive time-stepping. This is achieved by combining a frequency-domain-based homogenization technique with the harmonic balance FE method. The simulation results for the magnetic flux density along the axis of the FC magnets as a function of frequency and the resulting integrated transfer function (ITF) are compared to Hall probe and search coil measurements of the first prototype FC magnet for PETRA IV. A good agreement between simulated and measured ITFs is achieved for excitation frequencies from 10 Hz to 10 kHz.
