Abstract: Nearest Neighbor Search (NNS) is a fundamental problem in data structures with wide-ranging applications, such as web search, recommendation systems, and, more recently, retrieval-augmented generations (RAG). In such recent applications, in addition to the relevance (similarity) of the returned neighbors, diversity among the neighbors is a central requirement. In this paper, we develop principled welfare-based formulations in NNS for realizing diversity across attributes. Our formulations are based on welfare functions -- from mathematical economics -- that satisfy central diversity (fairness) and relevance (economic efficiency) axioms. With a particular focus on Nash social welfare, we note that our welfare-based formulations provide objective functions that adaptively balance relevance and diversity in a query-dependent manner. Notably, such a balance was not present in the prior constraint-based approach, which forced a fixed level of diversity and optimized for relevance. In addition, our formulation provides a parametric way to control the trade-off between relevance and diversity, providing practitioners with flexibility to tailor search results to task-specific requirements. We develop efficient nearest neighbor algorithms with provable guarantees for the welfare-based objectives. Notably, our algorithm can be applied on top of any standard ANN method (i.e., use standard ANN method as a subroutine) to efficiently find neighbors that approximately maximize our welfare-based objectives. Experimental results demonstrate that our approach is practical and substantially improves diversity while maintaining high relevance of the retrieved neighbors.

This is as good a time as any for a thought experiment.
You're in Nazi Germany. You know about the camps, you know what they do, you see the ash fall, you smell it. People who resist alone are killed, some are sent to the camps too. You're afraid to even talk to people about it for fear that they'll turn you in.
You think back to when the camps were being built. You had all the warning signs, but you didn't know how to interpret them. You could believe it would happen. You thought you'd have a chance to vote him out. You thought there might be another way. You thought maybe things would turn out differently if you just sat tight, kept your head down, kept yourself safe.
You see a family being dragged from their home. You know they will be killed. You want to fight, not just for them but for yourself. You opposed Hitler, and at any point you know you could be on the list... Even if you do nothing.
You wish you could rise up, shoot the SS, open the gates, fight it all. You know you aren't alone, but you don't know how to connect with the people who want the same thing.
Using the knowledge we have now, what should you have done in the preceding months and years to connect, to build a community that would open up all paths of resistance?
There were people who resisted. We know it wasn't enough.
Gun laws in Nazi Germany were very similar to US laws in that Nazis were largely free to own guns and everyone else was not. Unlike the US, where "others" have historically controlled using the fear that they might be randomly executed, Germany did codify it. Red flag laws were one more step in the US towards that codification, and there will be more.
When Nazis were taking away those guns, the social networks didn't exist to make resistance possible for most folks. But some Jews were able to resist.
It wasn't the guns that made the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising possible, though they definitely helped. The Warsaw Ghetto uprising was made possible by labor organizing in the precessing years.
If there were more uprisings like that, the Holocaust could have been stopped if not prevented. Social networks make resistance possible. Guns are only useful tools to resist authoritarianism *after* you build a community able to support that resistance, and they are only one of many tools made useful by that community.
Getting guns is easy, and not always necessary. Building community is hard. Guns won't keep you safe. Community will.
Single acts of resistance may slow the machine down, but to actually bring down a monster you need to be able to attack more than once. You need a society of resistance. If you are afraid now, build that. Talk to people while it's still safe to do so. Ask them where their red line is. Talk to neighbors. Figure out your network.
Take the steps you need now to keep your neighbors safe, to keep yourself safe.

Things like the #NoKings protests may feel like they're not enough, but they can be useful for building that network. Asking neighbors if they're going can help open up conversations, can lead to more conversations, can provide openings to find ways to escalate resistance, and can let you build what you need to feel safe going hard if you realize it's time.
Protests directly against facilities and other direct actions are small escalations that let you build trust and understand your network. If you want to know where you need to be, look at Twin Cities. That is the type of response that makes the machine grind to halt.
Make that happen everywhere and more escalation may not be necessary. And, if it is necessary to escalate more, that level of community organizing makes all other forms of escalation sustainable.

My neighbors definitely do not think this is more of the same. You don’t have to take my word for it. Look at how many Somali and Latin-American restaurants were thriving in November and now are closed, or getting almost no business if they are taking the risk of staying open. Look at how many kids are staying home from school — regardless of legal status, just because of the color of their family’s skin. Look at how many families are living in houses filled with dirty laundry because they won’t even take the risk of leaving the house to go to the laundromat.
My neighbors are living in •terror•.
If it’s more of the same, why did all of this suddenly change in the last two months?

It’s still unclear to me whether that incident was •targeting• the high school or merely •next to• the high school. I’ve heard conflicting reports from neighbors on that. One rumor is that school staff were abducted, but I don’t yet have solid confirmation on that I trust. I’ve also heard that Bovino was personally present at that raid / attack at the high school.
Either way…yeah, you can see why they’d cancel school.

After a few quiet days, ICE is crawling all over Mpls today. Heard some stories from neighbors who saw some •extremely• dangerous driving from them, including a left turn on red across a 4-lane highway.
Feels like they’re gearing up to target people specifically over Christmas, when they’re more likely to be at home or at church.
Be safe out there, neighbors, and keep your eyes open.

One truly mind-blowing thing about the ICE invading cities is how •little• actual violence there’s been against ICE agents. Observing, filming, making noise, warning neighbors? Yes. Violence, physical assault? Hardly any. At the level of people throwing snowballs.
Imagine, just imagine, the kind of principled self-restraint it takes for basically the entire population to respond to all this ongoing terrorizing and kidnapping following the constitutional principles that these agents themselves are flouting.
Cities? Cities are bastions of peace if you ask me.

Minnesota Proved MAGA Wrong
The pushback against ICE exposed a series of mistaken assumptions.

Something I do not think the fashy Trump-licking crowd understands is how •deeply• we here in Minneapolis and environs felt everything that’s happened.
The ICE invasion might have been a lot of things for the folks behind it: a strategic offensive, a gambit, a bender, a job, a joy ride. But I suspect that across all those cases, it was something they feel like they can walk away from whenever they decide to be done with it.
Not so for us neighbors. They have no idea how angry we are. They have no idea how long we’re going to stay angry. If you were a part of the ICE invasion, be warned: people will be out hunting for your head as long as you walk free on this earth.

People were jumping into action here in Minneapolis — droves of people, comfortable people, white people — not in mid-January, but in •early December•. (And the groundwork started much earlier!)
Community meetings overflowing. Signal groups exploding. Observer trainings filling day after day after day. Mutual aid networks popping up like mushrooms. On and on.
Why? Because we saw brown and Black neighbors being dragged from their cars, dragged from their homes, stalked, terrorized, •kidnapped• with barely the slimmest shadow of due process or legal oversight.

The ICE invasion has served a sinister goal: it has rendered whole swaths of our community invisible. All the people hiding at home, all the businesses closed (temporarily…we hope), they’ve disappeared from the public face of our city.
Right now, Minneapolis •looks• a lot whiter than it is.
But those people in hiding •are• here. We the helpers are putting ourselves on the line because we •want• them here. They are our neighbors. They are our community.

I have never, ever seen so many people so ready to take action, putting their lives on hold, stepping into danger because their neighbors are in danger. I beg you, wherever you are, to show some kind of solidarity with Minneapolis-St. Paul this Friday:
(1) SHUT DOWN NORMAL: Whatever your normal Friday is, find a way to pause it, interrupt it, halt it…even if only a little. Normal life cannot continue unabated while this is happening. It is intolerable, and we must not tolerate it.
(2) TAKE ACTION: Whether it is marching, yelling, organizing, forming that Signal group, taking that observer training, making connections with neighbors, just having a potluck…do •something•.
