This was good news for my collection and my wallet, with many £5 games filling up my shelves. Yes, The News is reaching new heights of bad, but I dont think keywords are really the cause of my suffering.
So I ask myself why they irk me and it generally comes back that I want control over others, which, as tyrants inevitably find out, isn't really possible. Hard enough controlling myself!
So, given what feeble control I have, I ask what needs doing, here, now, and find I need to know what's happening around me, here, now, to answer 😅
My strategy for news is roughly
- compare multiple sources eg AP, Reuters etc
- ignore what anyone says
- ignore claims what they will do or have done
- ignore predictions and interpretations
- be skeptical of causal inferences
- attend to what was actually done
The first and last when combined are often amusing in which actual observations are included or left out. Humans are awfully clever, and so cunning in their rhetoric 🤣

I’m so proud of my little brother.
I just spoke to him in his dorm room at a top 30 college here in the US, he just arrived for freshman orientation.
He got in on a full ride - tuition, housing, food, books, travel, stipend for daily expenses. Won a competitive scholarship to do so.
More than that, he’s had a tougher road than most to get there:
- he had to suddenly move away from Manila, Philippines (where he grew up) in middle school because of COVID restrictions that didn’t let kids go outside (2020)
- then, just as he adjusted to school and a different language in our home country, Ukraine, Russia invaded (2022)
- he stayed in Greece for a month while I was calling our congressional representative here in NY and negotiating with the US embassy to get them a visa ASAP to enter the US and be with me and my husband. There were no paths for Ukrainian refugees yet, we just wanted them with us temporarily for a few months to figure out what options they even had next.
- he had to wait, not going to school, with no clue where they’d move next, until TPS became available to Ukrainians and they got to stay here in the US
- then he had to continue high school in yet another system, yet another country, amidst news of bombings and destruction back home
- my mother wasn’t allowed to work for months while their documents were pending, so we had to raise money with a public GoFundMe campaign and my husband and I maxed out our credit cards to help them get by
- they shared a one-room cottage for the first year, graciously hosted for free by an elderly local couple
- he saw a therapist who also graciously took him in for free while they didn’t have insurance
- he had to graduate high school amidst news of other immigrant students getting arrested, detained, and deported at their own graduations around the country
- he wasn’t sure if he would even make it to college as this administration publicly considered canceling TPS for Ukrainians and cutting off their pathway to maintaining legal status.
We don’t know what tomorrow holds. But he’s there. He’s on campus. He got to go to college.
I love him so much.

I haven't gone there for years. Overpriced coffee that is of dubious quality for me. I prefer to patronize the small shops that make great coffee and it is fresh! Also, they don't cost any more than Starbucks and the overwhelming majority of the time there is NO LINEUP! Apple fought for privacy in 2016, refusing to implement a backdoor that would grant access to a domestic terrorist's phone (and therefore literally all iPhones), so I got an iPhone.

I have only subscribed to an online news source when for a few years I supported The Guardian. Then they led the transphobe charge in the UK and I noped out. I have not subscribed to any physical news media with this name nor in this state of residence nor during this millennium.
However, NPR and PBS could certainly provide evidence to snag me in the woke-sweeps.

The actions of the cheeto-king's government ministers are making me reconsider my opposition to the death penalty.
If - and to me it is a big "if" - the US can recover from our present era of facism - we will need something akin to what was called "De-Baathification" in Iraq, "Denazification" in post WW-II Germany, etc. Under those programs some people were executed after being found guilty at trials.

Well that's the government's fault for having completely unnecessarily created this conflict and brought the law into disrepute!
No wonder the police are "emotionally exhausted", when they have to keep on arresting peaceful old people like their grandparents, and being mocked for it! Not what any of them probably imagined their job was gonna be!
But this to me is the worst bit of news in that article:
"The planned new power follows protest-related measures in the crime and policing bill going through parliament, which bans the possession of face coverings ... at protests"
Planning to ban masks, in the time of covid. Denial or what.
I wonder if they've done an "impact assessment" for that bit of the law, because it certainly would disproportionately affect people disabled with Long Covid & similar things.
