Let's do a deep dive into this paper: "Why Language Models Hallucinate."
When this came out, many people's summary was "even OpenAI admits that hallucinations are a fundamental problem of transformers/autoregressive models/LLMs."
I've seen many people conclude that this means OpenAI is grifting, knows they're building on a wrong paradigm, knows they won't get to AGI etc.

The first page of the paper "Why language model hallucinate" by Kalai et al. Three of the authors are from OpenAI. Parts of the paper are highlighted.

My answer is NO to AI in a browser. All I want is for a browser to go to the URL and render the page. A search site to provide me a list of sites that meet my query, not a hallucination of a list. The page that is edited by a person presenting real information and not AI slop.
And yes, I do use AI at times at work. I use it to quickly find documents, but I will do the review to see if they are relevant.

Last year global temperatures were 1.6°C over the pre-industrial average, the first year to breach the 1.5° goal.
"One or two years that exceed 1.5°C above the pre-industrial level does not imply that the Paris Agreement has been breached. However, with the current rate of warming at more than 0.2°C per decade, the probability of breaching the 1.5°C target of the Paris Agreement within the 2030s is highly likely."

OK, this is genuinely scary. It's a picture of me, aged 5. It was taken in 1960. It was scanned and uploaded to Google Photos in 2002. No one has told Google where it was taken. But the map, bottom right, is correct.
Obviously, in 1960, my father's pre-war Exakta camera did not have GPS. Could you identify, from that picture, exactly where it was taken?
Google can.

A black and white picture of a small, anxious boy with blond hair, sitting on a stony beach. At the top of the beach, on the grass, a line of cars is visible. The picture is on a Google Photos page, and at the bottom right of the page is a map which shows the exact location where the photo was taken -- and it's right.

I'm currently reading The Long Heat by Wim Carton and Andreas Malm and highly recommend it. Do not be daunted by the page count of 704 pages. It has so many notes at the back, without back matter it's only ~420 pages. Hard to read emotionally, though. It paints a stark picture of earth's near future and the massive destruction of human and other-than-human life ahead, and the insane brinkmanship of elite consensus.
