"Do you know of any unexpected pattern of emoji usage? For example I'd expect younger folks to use emoji more than older folks and private communication to use it more than business... But maybe my assumptions are wrong or there is something else interesting?" - Yes generally our studies show that younger ppl use emojis more than older (and women a bit more than men). But in class with my undergraduates, they recently often tell me "I don't use emojis at all". I must say I don't fully believe them (maybe they don't even notice all the little hearts anymore?) and I haven't been able to show this in studies, but it's an interesting anecdotal data point I'd like to know more about!
Also, a student of mine recently asked teenagers (13 and 16yos) about their emoji interpretations. And surprisingly to us, these almost entirely match the data we already have for adults. Even for some like 🙃 and 😉 that I thought were changing (and just told you that younger people see them differently 😬). So that was a bit weird to me 😅 #emojis #WorldEmojiDay #linguistics
I feel like contextual clicks inside of apps are an anti-pattern (especially on touchscreens). I click on a toot over here, and it loads the toot. I click on the toot over there, and it loads the link to whatever article they linked to. Click in yet another spot, and it loads this profile of the person who made the toot. This is all inside a 1in x 2in rectangle. My thumb takes up half the rectangle. Like, wtf.
As laptop touchpads get worse, this is becoming a problem there too!
Working an unusual pattern of days this week and I can't decide if I like it. On the one hand I'm not knackered but on the other I don't get my usual block of four days off when I put my non-archaeology head on. I'm switching between states more which isn't always easy. Anyway, it means more chores get done during the week as I have the beans. Sparky is very confused but that's not unusual, love him. Tails takes it all in her stride as usual.
Is there an option hidden somewhere in git log / ref-log / mailmap which would support colorizing output lines differently depending on whether a author/committer matches some pattern (eg Mine vs Another Maintainer vs Unknown Contributor)?
I know I could post-process the output of git log or use other plumbing tools, but I'd rather not if something is built-in.

Pattern formation: reactivity is not necessary for chemotaxis--driven instabilities

Abstract: A classical result by Neubert, Caswell and Murray states that reactivity of a spatially homogeneous equilibrium is a necessary condition for diffusion-driven (Turing) instability. In this work, we investigate whether the same conclusion remains valid in the presence of chemotaxis. We consider a general reaction--diffusion system coupled with a chemotactic flux and establish necessary conditions for asymptotic instability. We show that the classical requirement of reactivity can be relaxed when the chemotactic contribution is sufficiently strong. In particular, while reactivity remains necessary for Turing instability, it is not a necessary condition for chemotaxis-driven instability. From a computational viewpoint, we extend the matrix-oriented formulation developed for reaction--diffusion systems to the more general class of reaction--diffusion--chemotaxis models. The chemotactic transport term is discretized in a form compatible with the matrix-oriented approximation of the diffusion operator, yielding an efficient numerical framework for the simulation of chemotaxis-driven pattern formation. A geometric interpretation of the instability region is presented, highlighting the distinct roles played by diffusion and chemotaxis. The theoretical and numerical developments are illustrated through two representative examples: a chemotaxis-extended Schnakenberg model, showing how chemotaxis modifies classical Turing patterns, and a predator--prey model, demonstrating that chemotaxis alone can induce pattern formation in the absence of both reactivity and diffusion-driven instability. These results reveal a fundamental difference between diffusion-driven and chemotaxis-driven mechanisms of spatial self-organization and provide new theoretical and computational insights into the role of non-symmetric transport processes in biological pattern formation.

I decided to investigate a weird car behaviour today: very occasionally, when turning right, I’d get an unpleasant grinding noise from the rear wheel. No obvious pattern (speed, turn in angle, braking, etc) some days it’d be there, other days, nothing.
So I popped the car into the garage and up on jacks, removed the wheel and brake pads (now that I know how, not daunting at all!) and a small rock fell out of the caliper: problem solved 🤞
I hope it had a nice time in there. 😘

LSR-Net: Long-Short-Range Operator Learning for Pattern Dynamics on Manifolds

Abstract: We propose the Long-Short-Range Neural Network (LSR-Net), an extensible operator-learning framework for predicting pattern dynamics on planar domains, spherical surfaces, and general manifolds. The method decomposes the forward evolution operator into a long-range component, represented by a compact Fourier multiplier constructed via the Sum-of-Exponentials (SOE) approximation, and a short-range component adapted to the underlying geometry and its intrinsic symmetries. For general manifolds represented by irregularly sampled point clouds, the long-range component is implemented by Gaussian gridding onto an auxiliary regular grid, where the Fourier multiplier is efficiently applied in k-space using FFT and the result is interpolated back to the original sample points. We evaluate LSR-Net on several benchmark systems, including the Allen-Cahn, Cahn-Hilliard, Schnakenberg, and Turing systems, over planar domains, spherical surfaces, and a blob-shaped manifold. Numerical results demonstrate that LSR-Net consistently achieves higher accuracy and improved stability compared with baseline operator-learning models. In particular, for Allen-Cahn dynamics on the sphere, the RMSE is reduced by approximately three orders of magnitude compared with the Spherical Fourier Neural Operator (SFNO). Rotation and reflection equivariance tests further confirm that the learned operator is consistent with these geometric transformations. These results indicate that LSR-Net provides an effective and robust approach for learning pattern dynamics on complex geometries.

Effect of Weak Non-Conservative Dynamics on Pattern Formation in Scalar Active Matter

Abstract: Biological systems such as bacteria and cells undergo growth or degradation, resulting in weak violations of mass conservation. We investigate how such weak non-conservative dynamics affect phase separation in scalar active matter by incorporating a reaction term into a minimal continuum model. Through numerical simulations and linear stability analysis, we show that even weak non-conservative reactions arrest coarsening and stabilize nonequilibrium microphase-separated states. With increasing activity, the system undergoes a morphological transition from interconnected labyrinthine patterns to worm-like structures and eventually to isolated droplets. Quantitative analysis of the correlation function and static structure factor reveals a well-defined steady-state characteristic length. Qualitative analysis of the resulting phases shows that the non-conservative reaction primarily promotes microphase separation and enhances local hexagonal ordering, while activity predominantly controls the domain morphology. Our results demonstrate that weak violations of mass conservation fundamentally alter the nonlinear coarsening dynamics of active phase separation and provide a minimal framework for understanding pattern formation in related systems.
