Fixed a few setup issues and I have my beta ThunderScope working with the latest calibration routine that does fine branch calibration of the individual sub-ADCs to reduce interleaving spurs.
The reduction in noise is pretty significant, just look how clean the eye and constellation are now

Even simple and ubiquitous constraints arising from type inference, particularly from use of induction principles, fall outside the expressive power of Miller patterns and their modern extensions. We observe that such constraints naturally correspond to definitions by dependent pattern matching. Motivated by this correspondence, we propose integrating dependent pattern matching into the unification process. We present a prototype implementation of a small dependently typed language that collects delayed unification constraints and resolves them via a pattern matching compiler. Our approach successfully infers solutions that are rejected by current systems such as Rocq and Lean, suggesting a new direction for unification that unifies type inference and pattern matching compilation.

But in class with my undergraduates, they recently often tell me "I don't use emojis at all". I must say I don't fully believe them (maybe they don't even notice all the little hearts anymore?) and I haven't been able to show this in studies, but it's an interesting anecdotal data point I'd like to know more about!
Also, a student of mine recently asked teenagers (13 and 16yos) about their emoji interpretations. And surprisingly to us, these almost entirely match the data we already have for adults. Even for some like 🙃 and 😉 that I thought were changing (and just told you that younger people see them differently 😬). So that was a bit weird to me 😅 #emojis #WorldEmojiDay #linguistics

Content warning: on sexism in technology work
For those that don't know, I help run a large women in technology chat group on Slack. It's been going for 11 years now! (ask me for an invite if you want one and that's appropriate!)
It has deeply shaped how I think about technology, especially the social side. There is so much embodied knowledge in that community, it's amazing. And it's also such a window into how much the mainstream of technology writing is dominated by men. We talk about it differently! We're much more likely to be critical, and to be critical of the _structures_ in tech. Sometimes that comes off as kneejerk "Ugh BRIAN!" to some of the bullshit men to do women in the workplace, but also embedded underneath is an understanding of rarely-mapped power structures in the field. So much advice out there is written assuming that there is no dissent, no silent frustration, no quiet abandoning the job when the pressures are unresolved. And so much of the tech world, press and on social media alike, has no insight that this attrition even happens.
Women, collectively, though, understand it. We notice the patterns of promotions. We understand the way that if we're in our 40s, we're rather likely to have a manager who is a decade younger than we are, with no particular experience. We notice when men are lauded for spending time with their family instead of work on occasion, but women are expected to be present at all times and rarely seen positively for doing the exact same things.
And yet, any given instance is always shrouded in deniability. The pattern generally holds, but is this one my fault? Do I not measure up? Or is it sexism?
That's what these structures rob from us: we never have the clarity in feedback that it is accurate, that is us that must change. When we stick to our guns, are we being obstinate, or are we correct? That information is denied to us by sexism. It only becomes clear in aggregate, and even then it is very hard to find action to take on it except to acknowledge it and move on.
I don't think people talk about that ambiguity enough: we're always looking for the clear sexism, the man speaking over the women, the trading sexual favors for advancement, the clear pattern of pet-to-threat that so many women experience as they age or gain skill in the field. But the bulk of sexism that we experience is in the structural poisoning of feedback.

Just finished "The Terraformers" by Annalee Newitz (@…). It was recommended as a "solarpunk" book, and I'm currently on a quest to find more speculative fiction as good as Le Guin or Butler, so I was eager to dig in. Having tagged the author (hi) I'll try to be polite here, but I'll admit I was disappointed.
Newitz clearly has a powerful imagination and there's lots of great stuff in the book, but it's not at all pushing boundaries in terms of imagining future societies. I think the message and intent was good in a lot of places, but off or self-contradictory in others. I absolutely adore the relatively small point made at the end about revolutions being complicated and not boiling down to heroes and battles, but despite the book's attempt to avoid that, I think it still falls into that pattern. Without too many spoilers, the way that some big problems are resolved near the end leans too much on a legal framework without questioning how it's enforced, and that resolution then means that a few heroic acts are enough to tip the balance, which undermines the point about messy histories.
The biggest contradiction of the book to my mind though is with a central theme. The book really explores a world in which "anyone of any species can be a person, as long as we just bioengineer them to be intelligent enough," and it tries to make a point about how engineering limited intelligences is cruel. At several points characters comment about how personhood shouldn't depend on intelligence. There's even a brief quote about how maybe rivers could be people... But... the point could have been "anyone can be a person, regardless of intelligence." This would have made for much more interesting philosophical territory to explore IMO (how do we then bound personhood; how do we reconcile predator/prey relations between persons, etc.). These are also questions that the indigenous traditions Newitz draws on (and consulted about, as mentioned in the acknowledgements) has interesting answers for, but we don't get to explore them through Newitz' world, and because the question of personhood regresses to the question of intelligence, it feels like the moral philosophy of the ERT folks isn't any better than the "InAss" they disparage.
It's not a bad book overall, even if it doesn't engage with the questions I'm hungry to see others engage with. Newitz' efforts to sketch out a more vibrant and diverse future are still monumental and inspiring in a lot of ways. I'm just still looking for something more. Ultimately, I think it lives up to the "solar" but not very much to the "punk."

Just finished an end to end simulation, BGA land to ARF6 launch, of the actual SFP28 TX lane 0 pair (not the shorter pair I had been using for initial layout work).
Took a while - the final geometry would have been way too big to simulate in a sane amount of time. Sonnet estimated 113GB of RAM and 122K mesh cells which... yeah.
I *could* do it, I have half a terabyte of RAM on this workstation, but considering that a 22GB / 54K cell simulation takes ~20 minutes per frequency and …

Abstract: We propose the Long-Short-Range Neural Network (LSR-Net), an extensible operator-learning framework for predicting pattern dynamics on planar domains, spherical surfaces, and general manifolds. The method decomposes the forward evolution operator into a long-range component, represented by a compact Fourier multiplier constructed via the Sum-of-Exponentials (SOE) approximation, and a short-range component adapted to the underlying geometry and its intrinsic symmetries. For general manifolds represented by irregularly sampled point clouds, the long-range component is implemented by Gaussian gridding onto an auxiliary regular grid, where the Fourier multiplier is efficiently applied in k-space using FFT and the result is interpolated back to the original sample points. We evaluate LSR-Net on several benchmark systems, including the Allen-Cahn, Cahn-Hilliard, Schnakenberg, and Turing systems, over planar domains, spherical surfaces, and a blob-shaped manifold. Numerical results demonstrate that LSR-Net consistently achieves higher accuracy and improved stability compared with baseline operator-learning models. In particular, for Allen-Cahn dynamics on the sphere, the RMSE is reduced by approximately three orders of magnitude compared with the Spherical Fourier Neural Operator (SFNO). Rotation and reflection equivariance tests further confirm that the learned operator is consistent with these geometric transformations. These results indicate that LSR-Net provides an effective and robust approach for learning pattern dynamics on complex geometries.

I have some sketches of an essay that I need to write, but I think it's worth brain-dumping a bit more in the mean time.
#LLMs are an attempt to make tech grow forever. But like, how many "your mom/a friend, but done by a precarious worker instead" apps do we really need? Everything right now is in the AI grift hole, but there's almost nothing of interest (even if you ignore the ethical concerns). Like, no, I don't fucking want a robot to lie to me about my groceries. That doesn't sound like a useful feature. There's a lot of useless shit being pumped out to prop up the bottom line, and a lot of people just want to be able to use their old phone for more than a couple of years.
No one is happy with this. No one wants this. Except the billionaires who are forcing us all to drink the capitalism koolaid, because they'd rather exterminate life on earth than live in a world where they experience consequences.
Nothing grows forever. That's not how literally anything in reality works, or has ever worked, at all in history. Some people think that the universe itself may work like that, but that's only an educated guess. Finite things don't grow forever. Every organism, every society, every technology, every dynamic and adaptive system we have ever known goes through a growth phase and then goes in to a stabilization phase. Or, following a Malthusian pattern, grows until it reaches a catastrophic point and collapses. Like lemmings. Or reindeer. Or cancer.
