Abstract: Aqueous solutions of HF and HCl behave very differently at intermediate concentrations: HCl dissociates completely, whereas HF remains only partially dissociated and forms bifluoride (HF$_2^-$). This should lead to different excess-proton spectra in HF and HCl solutions, in contrast to experimental reports. Using ab initio molecular dynamics, we show that in HF the proton is not firmly bound to F$^-$, as suggested by textbook chemistry, but dynamically shared with a hydrating water molecule. This is rationalized by a modified Eigen-state description which also explains the formation of HF$_2^-$. The similar vibrational spectra of HF and HCl solutions are explained by a complementary Zundel picture in terms of almost identical excess proton transfer free-energy profiles for HF and HCl. These results reconcile thermodynamic and spectroscopic observations and provide a unified microscopic picture of excess protons in aqueous solution.

Last week, while debugging a SwiftUI performance issue, I was running instruments and found that my profiles were plagued with noise.
Godot while idling was using so much CPU time that it was skipping entire frames while rendering.
I set out to fix those, 0.5% here, 0.5 there, and the Godot Editor (and Xogot) no longer skip frames.
People had been complaining that Godot would burn your battery in an hour if you left it idling, it no longer does.

Reminds me of the time I did a shoot-out of ten visual recognition APIs and I got demos of the others done in 20 minutes each but Google Cloud Compute took two hours because it trashed my Python #google

A new #Nextcloud adventure: having installed the new Social refactoring and passed the webfinger and ssl tests, was still unable to load some profiles and no interactions went out or came in.
Then I noticed PullRequest-5 - not knowing at all what I was doing - so I installed gh, authorized it, did the pull, composer, run sequence, and while the existing open tab for Social continued as before, 'Social' was now gone from the NC admin and menu!

One positive thing about the rise of LLMs is that I can look at the social media profiles of people defending the reputations of their favourite billionaires and tell myself they're probably AI.
(Which is a twist on the "NPC" rhetoric some use to apply to real people.)
