Christ Atherton (GÉANT) explains a recent fibre sensing experiment carried on the GÉANT network.

In December, the Fibre Sensing Task of the GÉANT (GN5-2) Project, with support from SURF, the Dutch National Research and Education Network (NREN), carried out an hour-long experiment using Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS).

During the experiment, a laser signal was injected into the same optical fibre that carries live internet traffic. This effectively turned the fibre optic cable into a sensor…

"LLMs work (somewhat) for coding computer programs. As everyone knows this is the highest form of human endeavor—unsurpassed by any other lesser activity such as project management, design, art or writing. Therefore LLMs will excel in every other field."
I really believe this is the crux understanding why so many programmers (including good programmers) fall for it in a way that can only be described as a cult, were any criticism is not only not allowed but reflexively is seen as either laughable or belligerent.
Anyway, LLMs are good* at writing code because writing code is easy and highly repetitive and doesn't actually take a lot of skill; unless it's novel ways to write code which LLMs cannot do.
Taking this as a sign LLMs can do other "lesser" activities is saying a lot about the hubris of programmers and not a lot of the capabilities of LLMs.

This whole "OpenClaw" thing has made me very angry and I wrote a bit about the why. It's not that "it's AI": It is the way that kind of project invalidates decades of work and care in free software. "AI" software isn't just careless, it is actively rejecting responsibility and care.

@adulau@infosec.exchange
2026-01-13 05:34:16

Reminder: under GPL/AGPL, “Corresponding Source” includes everything needed to build and modify the work. That means AI prompts, generated scripts, and config files as well. Don’t leave them out.
"The "Corresponding Source" for a work in object code form means all the source code needed to generate, install, and (for an executable work) run the object code and to modify the work, including scripts to control those activities."

"This project started as a search problem and ended as something more. The most important result isn’t which neighbourhood tops the rankings - it’s the realisation that platforms now quietly structure survival in everyday urban markets. London’s restaurant scene is no longer organised by taste alone. It is organised by visibility that compounds, rent that rises when discovery arrives, and algorithms that allocate attention long before consumers ever show up. What looks like “choice” is increasingly the downstream effect of ranking systems."

Running legacy services directly on a public IP is a mess in 2026.
I've got a toy project listening on :23 (Telnet) and :22 (SSH), on a public IP. I've only shared this information with a few friends. Scanners are finding it.
I had to put a “enter nnnn at the prompt" on the Telnet port.

Although there are striking differences between the cells that make up your eyes, kidneys, brain and toes,
the DNA blueprint for these cells is essentially the same.
Where do those differences come from?
Scientists are realizing the defining qualities that make up each cell actually lie in a cousin of DNA called RNA.
RNA was long considered DNA’s boring biochemical relative.
Researchers thought it merely takes the genetic information stored in DNA and delivers i…
