It takes a long time, a lot of money, and a lot of people with under-appreciated skills to do a major preservation.
(I know this from personal experience preserving steam locomotives.)
The project below is worth supporting. (And a visit to the Rosie The Riveter National Park in Richmond, California is a worthwhile way to spend an afternoon.)

Volunteers sought for historic WWII ship restoration project in East Bay
Seasoned welders and people with experience working with power tools or trained in safety procedures are being sought out to support the Victory Ship Revival initiative in Richmond.
