I've been using Pika Backup with a google drive destination for at least a year and it's always been relatively smooth.
For the last three days, though, it's been complaining the destination is unresponsive (although I can browse it happily from commandline etc).
Some new package released three days ago that might interfere?
Update: looks like there was a flatpak-runtime org.gnome.Platform on the 17th.
Ideas anybody?

Now out in #TMLR:
🍇 GRAPES: Learning to Sample Graphs for Scalable Graph Neural Networks 🍇
There's lots of work on sampling subgraphs for GNNs, but relatively little on making this sampling process _adaptive_. That is, learning to select the data from the graph that is relevant for your task.
We introduce an RL-based and a GFLowNet-based sampler and show that the approach perf…

A diagram of the GRAPES pipeline. It shows a subgraph being sampled in two steps and being fed to a GNN, with a blue line showing the learning signal. The caption reads Figure 1: Overview of GRAPES. First, GRAPES processes a target node (green) by computing node inclusion probabilities on its 1-hop neighbors (shown by node color shade) with a sampling GNN. Given these probabilities, GRAPES samples k nodes. Then, GRAPES repeats this process over nodes in the 2-hop neighborhood. We pass the sampl…
A results table for node classification on heterophilious graphs. Table 2: F1-scores (%) for different sampling methods trained on heterophilous graphs for a batch size of 256, and a sample size of 256 per layer. We report the mean and standard deviation over 10 runs. The best values among the sampling baselines (all except GAS) are in bold, and the second best are underlined. MC stands for multi-class and ML stands for multi-label classification. OOM indicates out of memory.
Performance of samples vs sampling size showing that GRAPES generally performs well across sample sizes, while other samplers often show more variance across sample sizes. The caption reads Figure 4: Comparative analysis of classification accuracy across different sampling sizes for sampling baseline
and GRAPES. We repeated each experiment five times: The shaded regions show the 95% confidence intervals.
A diagrammatic illustration of a graph classification task used in one of the theorems. The caption reads Figure 9: An example of a graph for Theorem 1 with eight nodes. Red edges belong to E1, features xi and labels yi are shown beside every node. For nodes v1 and v2 we show the edge e12 as an example. As shown, the label of each node is the second feature of its neighbor, where a red edge connects them. The edge homophily ratio is h=12/28 = 0.43.

i was put in charge of three grandchildren for a few hours yesterday so we headed straight to ben & jerry's to split a milkshake, then explored the state theater (and even sneaked into a movie but later got thrown out for horsing around on the escalator), then i gave a nickel tour of angell/mason/haven halls, then they chased squirrels on the diag which took longer than you might think, then we looked in all the windows in nickels arcade. it all went slowly and well.

A four-, five-, and a six-year old are seated in a booth with a bright orange tabletop in front of a purple each with a small cup containing vanilla milkshake. They're eating with straws and spoons. So far, it is not a messy disaster.

This is a cheerful photo of three children enjoying milkshakes at a restaurant booth. The setting is a classic ice cream parlor with its distinctive blue and yellow booth seating and black-and-white checkered floor.

This photo shows three children sitting together on a wooden bench in a public building. The setting has large windows in the background showing green grass and trees outside, with some chairs and bicycles visible through the glass.

This photo shows the Michigan diag, a public green space with a concrete sidewalk running along the right side. The area features a well-maintained grassy lawn with several young trees planted throughout, each surrounded by dark mulch circles. The trees appear to be newly planted or relatively young.

In the background, there are mature, established trees providing a canopy of green foliage. White banners or flags can be seen hanging from poles, though the text on them isn't clearly visible. Th…

Many of us are bewailing that there are relatively few solid ways to react to the oncoming tsunami of dictatorship here in the US.
But some ideas strike me:
1. For DC - Since their police force has been federalized, DC could simply discharge and stop paying the officers (or providing benefits) and let the Feds pick up the slack. (Remember how Reagan fired the air traffic controllers? Same idea.)
2. Churches could refuse to admit people who are employees of ICE (or their f…

One of the issues in the discussion about (gen)AI is the level of anthropomorphizing (terrible word, i have to look it up everytime). AI is not "intelligent" as humans are. It is something different. In some aspects it is better then humans in other (often relatively simple things) incredibly worse. Also we draw wrong conclusions, being able to win a math olympiad is impressive but is not necessarily a sign of intelligence. I view AI as very capable world changing technology. That&…

Content warning: Wels thing explained in English

“Wels” is the German word for catfish (the fish, not the deceptive online action). After a giant catfish nibbled on the the toes of bathing people in Bavaria, police shot the fish dead. Now there’s a second catfish on the loose. This is all very exciting in a country that sees relatively few police shootings of dangerous fish. Also, “Wels” is a fun word to say and sounds similar to “Welt” (world), great pun potential.

Every tenth of a degree matters; each increment of global warming will bring a relatively larger increase in adverse societal and ecological impacts than the last.

I have a question about the following:
Space-X satellites are relatively low orbit - they go around the world, their radio/signal footprint on the ground goes around the world with them.
So how does a single country, the US, issue "license" for radio spectrum that apply outside of the US geographic borders?
"SpaceX buys wireless spectrum from EchoStar in $17 billion deal"

glad to see so many of you turn out for transit at the state building in SF today!
and Gavin Newsom... bro... you messed up so bad, frickin' Catherine Stefani is calling you out! this loan was supposed to be a done deal. sign the paperwork!
(Stefani is a relatively conservative westside assemblywoman who was the only one of 11 supervisors not to endorse last year's Prop L to tax Uber/Waymo to fund Muni. even she's had it w/ Newsom on this)

AP is ending its weekly book reviews, beginning Sept. 1.
This was a difficult decision but one made after a thorough review of AP’s story offerings
and what is being most read on our website and mobile apps as well as what customers are using.
Unfortunately, the audience for book reviews is relatively low and we can no longer sustain the time it takes to plan, coordinate, write and edit reviews.
AP will continue covering books as stories, but at the moment those will …
