"A federal appeals court on Monday refused to throw out an $83.3 million jury verdict against U.S. President Donald Trump for damaging the reputation of the writer E. Jean Carroll in 2019 when he denied her rape claim.
The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan rejected Trump's argument that the January 2024 verdict should be overturned because he deserved presidential immunity from Carroll's lawsuit."

I've had a few of these thoughts stuck in my craw all day because I watched this liberal historian talk about the Galleanisti.
youtube.com/shorts/93yHEn8BYE4
Basically, she says that "of course the government had the right to target them." Then she goes on to talk about how it became an excuse to carry out a bunch of attacks on other marginalized people. Now, the Galleanisti had been bombing the houses of politicians and such. I get where she's coming from saying that one of their targets "was in the right" to try to catch them. But there's some context she's not talking about at all.
These were Italian anarchists, so they were not white and they were part of an already marginalized political group. Basically all of Europe and the US was trying to wipe out anarchists at the time. Meanwhile, the sitting president at the time showed the first movie in the White House. That movie was KKK propaganda, in which he was favorably quoted. The US was pretty solidly white supremacist in the 1920's.
Like... A major hidden whole premise of the game "Bioshock: Infinite" is that if you went back to the US in the 1920's, and you had magic powers, you would absolutely use them to kill as many cops as possible and try to destroy society. There's a lot of other stuff in there, I don't want to get distracted, but "fuck those racists," specifically referring to the US in the 1920's, was a major part of a major game.
Those Italian anarchists were also stone cutters. They carved grave stones. But the dust from that can kill you, much like black lung for coal miners. So they were dying from unsafe working conditions, regularly raising money to support dying coworkers and then carving gravestones for those same coworkers.
Now, I personally think insurrectionary anarchism is a dead end. I disagree with it as a strategy. We've seen it fail, and it failed there. But of course it makes sense that they wanted to blow up the government.
...And that's the correct way to structure that. When you say, "of course they were in the right" you're making a very clear political statement. You could easily say, "the cops in Vichy France had every right to hunt down the French Resistance." You would technically be correct, I guess. But it would really say something about your politics if you justified the actions of Nazi collaborators over those fighting against the Nazis.
And you may say, "oh, but the Nazis didn't have justification for anything. They invaded a sovereign nation, so their government wasn't legitimate anyway."
To which I would reply, "have you considered a history book about the US?"

Kid1 is preparing to DM his first ever D&D campaign (he'll run it starting in the fall). He's been constantly bouncing ideas off me for the past few weeks. He's come up with what's IMHO a setting that's fun and should work well, both in the prepped parts and on the fly: he's modelling the campaign on Gormenghast. I suspect some of his more bizarre ideas will fall away once play begins. Still, it's been great listening to him dream up a custom version of a part…

Oh hey, good things do happen even in the darkest times. Yarvin is taking about fleeing the country.
The thinks that Trump's fascism is failing (which it is) and tha Trump is incapable of doing what it takes to actually hold power. He's afraid of vengeance, which is honestly unlikely given how completely useless the democrats actually are. But I'm glad he's afraid. I hope he runs away to Russia, gets drafted and deployed to Ukraine, and eats a drone.
I also hope he can somehow convince Thiel to be afraid, but I think that's unlikely.
The fact is that if Trump fails, which I think he will (and Yarvin thinks it could be soon), it won't be because of Democratic leadership. It will be because of antifascist organizing and community resistence. We will have, once again, kept ourselves safe while the DNC argued over how much of their values they should abandon and how much of the left to sacrifice to "get votes."

There was once a machine that told you "you want this" and "this is good." It said, "there can be no better system and it's foolish to try to build one." That machine has long since failed to function. Now you choke on fumes as it is consumed by the wild flames of an abandoned cause.
That machine could not possibly work anymore because the evidence of it's falsehood has become too overwhelming.
No, only abject terror now can keep you from plotting your escape, from creating an alternative. No, the illusion has long since broken. All that's left now is triggering fight, flight, freeze as hard as possible. Most will be paralyzed, and those who fight can be used as an excuse to escalate the terror.
These are the final stages of a dying sun, expanding and consuming it's children before the final supernova.
There is no longer a stable system, no longer a system with a future. All that remains is the spectacle that hopes to distract you long enough that you too can be consumed, that it may sustain itself a few moments longer.

My blog -- which I haven't updated since 2019 -- was off the air for an unknown amount of time due to a Debian update that removed MariaDB. Finally got around to fixing that today. It "only" has posts going back to 2005, when I switched to Drupal. Before that I posted hundreds of entries over several years using software I wrote for myself. Somewhere I might have those files.

Some on Wall Street are mulling the likelihood of a recession.

“The odds are close to 50/50, maybe more,” said Neil Dutta,

Every time a credulous reporter chases a bogus marketing stunt like "Maxwell House" renaming to "Maxwell Apartment," journalism in general loses more credibility points. In a world that includes Fox and Newsmax, journalism can't afford that.
