"10000000mAh USB Portable Charger Solar Power Bank"
Sure buddy, a *10 million* mAh portable power bank with solar panel, in a package that is roughly the size of a phone in a rugged case. For $17.59. 🤦‍♂️
Maybe 10 million mAh over the life of the unit. 😉

Tumble in storage battery costs to boost shift to renewables, says IEA | #Reuters
reuters.com/business/energy/tu

The total capital costs of battery storage are due to tumble by up to 40% by 2030, the Paris-based watchdog said in its Batteries and Secure Energy Transitions report.
"The combination of solar PV (photovoltaic) and batteries is today competitive with new coal plants in India," said IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol.
"And just in the next few years, it will be cheaper than new coal in China and gas-fired power in the United States. Batteries are changing the game before our eyes."

At Goodwill yesterday, scored a USB-C *36800mAh* power bank with 1.5W solar charging, 2x USB-A 3.1A outputs, waterproof (?), flashlight. 2023 model, brand new, unopened package. Paid just $2.25 (after discount on the already low price of $2.99).
Sells on Amazon for $19 (regularly $30 but who would pay that much?). Gets good reviews.

A power bank with solar panel on top, orange trims on the side. sitting on top of its white cardboard package. The side of the package has a Goodwill price label showing $2.99 price that is circled by hand in red.

One eye-popping forecast touted this week: By 2030, the surge in AI means US data centers may gobble up more power than households.

Despite the boom in solar power, it’s unlikely renewables can handle that. At the very least, that means existing fossil-fuel generators stay online longer and more gas-fired output probably will be required in the US and elsewhere.

Now count how many stories you read about this.
Then ask what accounts for the difference.
China Electricity Council says that by the end of 2024, the wind and solar capacity (~40%) on its grid will exceed coal's share (37%).

IEA: renewables such as solar, wind and hydro and nuclear power are set to account for almost half of the world’s electricity generation by 2026. By early 2025, renewables are expected to make up more than one-third of total electricity generation, overtaking coal – and nuclear power generation globally is forecast to reach an all-time high the same year.

This take on solar power is correct. And the same reasoning applies to batteries, which if anything are dropping in price even faster than PVs (it’s a less mature industry). caseyhandmer.wordpress.com/202

This chart shows costs of photovoltaic panels as a function of cumulative production from 1976 to 2023, which allows the derivation of a learning rate of 44% since 2009. That means that for every doubling of cumulative production, costs of solar panels drop by 44%.

Some hard facts for the eco-techno-optimists from the always well researched Low Tech magazine.
"Unfortunately, the planned switch to low-carbon energy sources and the electrification of heating and transport technologies will not decrease our dependency on the steel industry – on the contrary."

The high steel intensity of low carbon power sources confronts us with a so-called “catch-22”, a situation in which there seems to be no escape from a problem no matter what we do. We need much more steel if we replace thermal power plants with renewable ones. Because there is not enough steel scrap available, we can only produce that extra steel from iron ore in blast furnaces burning fossil fuels. To address climate change, we need to build low-carbon sources quickly and in great numbers. How…
The continuous growth of the steel output – the increasing steel intensity of human society – makes sustainable steel production impossible. No technology can change that because it’s not a technological problem. Like forestry can only be sustainable if the wood demand does not exceed the wood supply, steel is sustainable or not depending on the balance between (scrap) supply and (steel) demand. We may not be able to escape the Iron Age, but we have an option to escape the catch-22 that inextri…

I have programmed a small #rstats script combining the web-based #API of our SolarEdge #photovoltaic system with the local API of our go-e #wallbox.
If the car charges, the script looks up the production of the PV system and increases/decreases the charging current for the car accordingly. This makes the most of the collected #solar power. What now runs on an old #Raspberry Pi would’ve easily cost us 500 EUR installation costs – and I have full control over everything! 🤓🤩
