If you’re wondering what the Internet has become, Cloudflare Radar offers a good overview. In the top 10, there’s nothing outside the large conglomerates. I hope we can change this trend over the next 10 years.

Started migrating services off of the RPis and onto the new #Proxmox server. The initial install went fairly smoothly, got the VLANs configured, and then setup the new primary DNS server. That took longer than it should have, but I will say this: the VM is so much more snappy than the Pi. Next up is the secondary DNS server.
I has a bed.
No mattress until Monday, but a bed fully stained and varnished and constructed.
Had to wait a couple of days for varnish which never came. Went out to an actual DIY shop in the end. Gonna have a lot of spare varnish soon.
Varnished the whole room with two more coats as well as the bed twice.
A few more things to buy after Xmas and the full media setup can't happen until the new Steam Machine at its heart is released. Maybe cobble together something to plug a laptop into in the meantime? All for next year though once the mattress arrives and I can actually sleep in the bedroom.

My "grow plants everywhere" mod for #Luanti is progressing!
I just built a routine to do blobby weight regions as the intersection of a bunch of parabolas, where weight increases logarithmically from the edge of the parabola with an adjustable edge region, and we use the geometric average of these weight values within the intersection region. Then I spent a few hours hunched over a biomes vornoi diagram approximating different broad regions like "arid_grasses" and "temperate_trees" so you can just name some combination of these regions (with custom per-region multipliers) and have your plant definition apply within those regions. I was using rectangular min/max heat/humidity values before, but they were pretty awkward to work with.
If anyone on here who plays Luanti wants to check it out let me know and I can prioritize publishing what I've got. I've got growth definitions for most but not all VoxeLibre plants and it wouldn't be hard to put them together for another game. No trees yet, but that's pretty much the next thing to work on.

Went to quilt club today. Its amazing how a little bit of time being creative, with genuinely kind and nice people can really make you feel good. This quilt is being donated to a soup kitchen. Next month we are making lap quilts for hospice.

Look at this lovely Outrun cab 😻 https://youtube.com/shorts/QCEK0RWZIuU?feature=share I'm working on the coin mech next, and making the coin reject button grant a credit.
One of the things that made organizing a lot easier with the GDC was a thing called "GDC in a box." It was a zip file with all kinds of resources. There was a directory structure, templates for all kinds of things like meetings and paperwork you had to file (for legal reasons) and "read me" files.
We had all kinds of support. There were people you could talk to who had been there. There were people you could call to walk through legal paperwork (taxes). Centralized orgs are vulnerable and easy to infiltrate. They're easy for states to shut down. But there are benefits to org structures.
I think it's possible to have the type of support we had with the GDC, but without the politics of an org (even the IWW). I hope this most recent essay has some of the same properties. I hope that it makes building something new, something no one has really imagined before, easier.
This whole project is something a bit different. It's a collective vision and collective project, from the ground up. Some of it has felt like a brain dump, just getting things that have been swimming around in my head down somewhere. But I hope this feels more like an invitation.
Everything thus far written is all useless unless people do things with it. Only from that point does it become a thing that lives, a thing with its own consciousness that can't be controlled by any individual human.
Tech billionaire cultists want to bring a new era of humanity with AGI. That is definitely not possible with LLMs, and may not be possible at all. But there is a super intelligence that is possible, though it's been constrained by capitalism: collective human intelligence.
The grand vision of the tech dystopians is that of the ultimate slave that can then enslave all humans on their behalf. I think we can build a humanity that can liberate itself from their grasp, crush their vision, and build for itself a world in which people will never be enslaved again. Not only do I think it's possible, I think it's necessary. I think there are only two choices: collective liberation or death.
And that's what I plan to write about next time to wrap this whole project up. Today things often feel impossible. But people talked about the Middle Ages as though they were the end of the world, and then everything changed in unimaginable ways. Everything can, and will, change again.
"The profit motive often is in conflict with the aims of art. We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings."
I had a great time performing with top percussionists B C Manjunath and Matt Davies, with a project developed through short residences at IRCAM Paris, state51 London and Sheffield. The show at Crucible Sheffield went great and we would love to tour it next year.
The project brings together intricate South Indian rhythmic patterns of Konnakol with live coding, exploring the algorithmic qualities together.

Do you guys think the recent memory price surge would have an effect on the pricing of the Fairphone 6? I really want to get one but I'm in Australia until February and the only way to get it is by shipping it to the other side of the planet which obviously comes at a cost. But it wouldn't matter if it's going to be 100€ more next year anyways. 😩

just registered for my continuing Spanish (200) class next semester.
The enrollment problems at VIU (and all across the sector) have made it difficult to fill these classes. The fall semester class didn't run because there were not enough students enrolled.
I really really hope it gets up to the number needed to run the course!
There always seems to be good uptake of the 100/101 classes but 200 is a struggle.

I regularly get random animals (well, mainly cats and foxes) come and stare at me outside my studio. That is already uplifting, but today was especially good in in that one actually came in and stayed for a while. Hopefully it’ll not be the last time. My next mission is for a fox to do the same. Anyone know how to befriend a fox?
Managed to put the new Pi music player together before leaving work today. Got it set up with remote control and a quick test of playback. Next stop: Speaker mounting and figuring out if I should bet on physical security through obscurity by making it not easily visible or using a moderately long RCA cable. What’s a reasonable cable length with decent quality cables?

A few weeks ago my Magimix « L’expresso automatique » died on me. After several attempts to repair it I had to give up and buy a new espresso machine. Since it’s almost Christmas and shit I splurged on this.
This thing is definitely not plug & play. I’m not even finished tuning the quantity vs grind size knobs — it’s like finding the « ideal » solution for a single equation with two unknowns, and the equation depends on the particular coffee yo…
Another day of mostly painting and double-varnishing. Though the chests also have lids now, and all the window doors are painted ready for the windows.
We now pause for a while because I can't be here all day every day due to my surprisingly hectic calendar over the next couple of weeks.
I CANNOT WAIT for this book. Emilie is brilliant and her work has been an inspiration and beyond helpful as I try to write a very similar history but of Canada, rather than the US. Out next week!!!

Well, shit. Guess I picked a bad day to re-case my PC and upgrade the GPU. Everything went well until I tried to update the OS, which failed while tossing a Mesa dependency error. Did some checking, and it seems to just be a Mesa issue I can't really do anything about ATM. So I'm stuck in 4K/basic graphics driver mode, with screen tearing a-plenty, till tomorrow? Hopefully? lol.
The new case looks nice at least.

I always use some of the funds from the gardenstate.social patreon to hire illustrators to make art for our instance.
Anyone have good ideas of what kind of art we could commission next?

So I was at node 22.9.0 and mastodon's compiler was complaining that I needed to be at least 22.14 or something… I've used the command at root:
n latest
and
n stable
The first installed v25.2.1
The second installed v24.11.1
now when I do node --version it reports:
v24.11.1
So hopefully the next time I need to do a mastodon upgrade it won’t complain anymore? 🤷♂️

Final day of having the carpenter here. A lot of sawing. Built the dresser desk drawers, cut all the perspex into shape for the windowed doors that fit together now but still need gluing.
The dresser drawers are just about big enough to put the hairdryer in, so that's nice.
Still quite a bit for the other workers to do. Detailing for panels on the doors, gluing and hanging the window doors, handles and painting and touch ups. They reckon another 5 days work still, only two of which can be next week because I have stuff to do.
Must be weird being a builder and finishing your part of the job then never seeing it completed. He's done all this great work on it but will only see the completed work if he has to come back for something else. And he doesn't want to come back coz he's fed up of driving across London 😆
I think today's worker is the owner of the company, he certainly is the assessor.
He worked a lot later than those without the vested interest there. 😆 I finished work at my job before he did! 🤭
All the wood was sanded down and remaining nude wood given some paint. We have a test plank in the foreground of the first picture here which is painted with a second coat of paint. Seems likely we lose all the wood grain when doing that, and so will prefer the paler look where it's obviously made of wood not paint.
Won't really know for sure till it's dry. Prefer the colour a bit darker like that but if we're hiding the wood grain we might as well have used MDF instead of pine. We're after something clearly made of wood.
Another area is test-painted with just the clearcoat top varnish as a second layer. That's likely to be right, just a bit more shiny and protected.
The carpenter proper is back from holiday and starts tomorrow. He has a lot of drawers and doors to build and edging to attach to make the door panels. Still hoping at least the carpentry will be pretty much all done by the end of the week but likely some painting and touching up still to do next week. Hopefully by the end of Tuesday because I'm not really able to be here all day each day for most of the two weeks after that.
