Last week our bathroom mat with the golden retriever type fur but in teal stripes instead of gold started folding its corners like starfish arms and shunting itself around the floor that was under the original floor till those cheap tiles came loose and we had to tear it up. We haven't opened the door in a while and we're lucky cuz it can only fit an inch of its edge under. the deontological shopping mall known as Lloyd Center in Portland Oregon

A round ice-skating rink, framed by two levels of round balconies and a square skylight, inside a dying shopping mall. A colorful kiosk in the foreground has paused its exodus to watch the dozen or so people and children still skating in the rink in celebration of the impending death of the mall.
An empty cubical area about 4 meters wide, where a shop used to be, with some exposed wires dangling from the ceiling and a spotlight shining at a point where dark flooring meets white floor tiles. In front, some strips of yellow tape on the ground appear to mark a place where a lantern-headed stick figure was found decapitated.

For complex reasons I had to replace the window ledge in our garage; so I used some of the tiles I had left over from when I did our front step a few years ago; conveniently they just fit nicely. Worked great.

A window ledge; the sides are raw brick, the ledge itself is 6 tiles in alternating red and grey.

How local rules generate emergent structure in cellular automata

Abstract: Cellular automata generate spatially extended, temporally persistent emergent structures from local update rules. No general method derives the mechanisms of that generation from the rule itself; existing tools reconstruct structure from observed dynamics. This paper shows that the look-up table contains a readable causal architecture and introduces a forward model to extract it. The key observation in elementary cellular automata (ECA) is that adjacent cells share input positions, so the prime implicants of neighbouring transitions overlap. That overlap can couple the transitions causally or leave them independent. We formalize each pairwise interaction as a tile. A finite-state, tiling transducer, $\mathcal{T}$, composes tiles across the CA lattice, tracking how coupling and independence propagate from one cell pair to the next. Structural properties of $\mathcal{T}$ are used to classify ECA rules that can sustain regions of causal independence across space and time. We find that, in the 88 ECA equivalence classes, the number of local configurations at which coupling is structurally impossible -- computable from the look-up table -- predicts the prevalence of dynamically decoupled regions with Spearman $\rho = 0.89$ ($p < 10^{-31}$). The look-up table encodes not just what a rule computes but where it distributes causal coupling across the lattice; the framework reads that distribution forward, from local logical redundancy to emergent mesoscopic organization.

Good lord, I did a DIY thing and it just worked! Nothing extra broke, no tiles fell off the wall, no extra items had to be hastily purchased. This timeline is definitely suspect.
Also, I now own a pair of vice-grip pliers, and I'm casting my eye around the house for other things that might need to be gripped very tightly.

I wanted to explore the topographic relief cartographic style that I did for Santorini, Greece, last year¹ and tried it on the Faroe Islands 🇫🇴.
One new thing is that I worked with @… terrain tiles instead of processing the raw NASADEM data.

For a series of days, I’ve been tackling the back patio. Pressure washed all the moss off, pulled so many weeds from in between the stones, and flossed out the dirt in the gaps with a putty knife. Last night I put down polymeric sand and soaked it in.
Very happy with the results.

Added carpet tiles to the front two thirds around the trap door. These crates are great. Stackable and collapseable and fit in the gap between the front seats and in the spaces under the folded-out beds and have a wooden table surface on top.
Fetched all the cushions in, the sofa would be comfortable to anyone 10cm shorter than me, but I gotta hunch. Can't afford a pop-top.
