Good Morning #Canada
Finally, arriving at our our 10th province, Manitoba, and putting this series to rest means no more nightmares. Friendly Manitoba, it says so right on their license plates, also has hundreds of abandoned towns, but today we'll focus on Scarf. Named for William Scarf, not for winter clothing or the more recent term for eating quickly, the settlement began in the 1880s, started to flourish after train service arrived in 1907, and died slowly after train service stopped, with the last residents leaving in the 1980s. But in 2013, the regional mayor decided to sell parcels of land in the ghost town for $10. I wasn't able to find out if this plan to bring Scarf back from the dead was successful, but perhaps the area is cursed. In 2020, a tornado touched down near Scarf, killing two teenagers when their vehicle was swept off the road.

Indiana governor Mike Braun announced today that he is calling a special session to consider redrawing congressional districts in the state, the latest Republican state to work on its maps ahead of 2026.
Indiana is one of several Republican-led states that the Trump administration has pressured to undertake mid-decade redistricting to favor Republicans,
-- which began with a push in Texas to redraw lines to add Republican seats.

In Orwell's "1984," there is a character named Emmanuel Goldstein who is the object of a daily "Two Minutes Hate" ritual. Goldstein is a fiction, created by the state to focus anger away from itself: a scapegoat. We don't quite have such a figure today ((George Soros is as close as they can get)) but we have entire classes of people defined as evil, and a media machine that broadcasts hate 24 hours a day.

it was a great day: the no kings rally was inspiring, the wolverines triumphed, PSG came back from down 3–1 to pull out a draw (yesterday, but watched today), and j.b. threw a terrific 40th fête d'anniversaire. perfect conditions for a #LateNightDanceParty!

Day 21: Aya Yoshinaga
I'm actually generally much less aware of the creators involved in the anime I watch, for a number of reasons, and the few anime directors I could name without looking them up were all men before I started this list. I've now got a short list of anime directors/writers who are women, and the first I'll include here is Yoshinaga, in part because she was pivotal to one of my favorite lesser-known anime, "Kurau Phantom Memory". It was actually one of the first anime I watched ever, but I didn't like it just because of that, since I've rewatched it at least twice and still regard it highly. It's got a pretty cool science fiction setting, an extremely cool barely-comprehensible alien race, a female protagonist who is not sexualized and not subjected to romance, and it centers a platonic relationship torn apart by technological hubris. Very "cool seinen stuff that wouldn't make it past the focus groups today" stuff.
Besides Kurau, Yoshinaga has worked on other great stuff like Golden Kamuy, Azumanga Daioh, Durarara, and Fullmetal Alchemist, and when you see a correlation like that between well-written shows and the same writer showing up again and again, it's clear there's talent there, even if most of these are manga-based.
Probably going to circle back to at least one more anime writer, but for tomorrow I'll move on to manga probably, since I want to space out all my YA enthusiasm a bit.

Today thanks to a defect of another train combined with complete incompetence of Polish railway traffic controllers, I've spend almost 3 hours in a train, stopped halfway between Złotniki Grzybowe and #Poznań Strzeszyn train stops (1.5 km from either). I would lose perhaps half of this time if they instead stopped us at the previous stop, and told us what's up, so we could just go catch the urban bus. But that's not my biggest problem.
These 3 lost hours means I'm behind with work. So I'm hurrying to catch up. Except I'm so completely messed up because of all this, I can't really focus on work, so I had to stop. So I'm going to be even more behind.

Coming to the end of my paid bereavement time. I realized I am in no way ready or even fit for returning to work. Turned in paperwork for a short LOA, and requested an emergency withdrawal from school.
I managed to unpack a few boxes and put our bed together today, but everything seems to take three or four times longer than it should and I just can't focus. I keep making stupid mistakes. My brain is definitely not in gear.
What I can say on a positive note is that I have an …
So: played through 5 Starship songs and 6 Kansas songs today.
Regression in a couple spots as my art brain wrestles with my chart brain, but what has come into focus is what needs really close attention.
The 12 Temptations songs are more straightforward and I can read them if necessary, but the rock stuff needs more muscle memory and commitment to come alive.
Tomorrow I review:
- live endings for the Temps
- Smash Mouth tunes, incl charting them
