Bell with another round of layoffs. The r/bell thread seems to think 10% across the country. It’s can't actually remember a time when Bell announced they were 'hiring'.
How is this company one of the 'big’ telecoms and yet continues to offload people?

TransLink preparing transit services for winter weather
Deeper tread tires expanded to 70 per cent of bus fleet to help keep customers moving
TransLink is equipping roughly 500 more buses than last year with tires featuring deeper tread patterns for improved traction, to prepare for winter weather in Metro Vancouver.

Up to 1,100 buses, about 70% of the fleet and double from 2024, will be operating with Michelin Grip D tires this upcoming season.

In October of 2017, I extended a business trip to Vancouver and had my wife fly out to meet me for some touristy stuff. Vancouver is an awesome holiday destination, and there's no shortage of activities in and around the city. We spent a couple of days exploring Stanley Park, walked the interior trails, played at the Pitch and Putt golf course (opened in 1927), and circled the park on rented bikes. I highly recommend it as a place to visit.

I learned about Repair Cafe by the news its funding is discontinued. But more cities need to support this type of events. In a world of planned obsolescence, the environmental bill is being paid by communal waste collection services. A targeted analysis of which repairs could be most cost-effective for waste management could help justify funding of such initiatives with volunteer-based repairs.

Good Morning #Canada
In July 1871, the City of Victoria officially became the capital of British Columbia, when the province joined the rest of Canada. At the time, the city was larger than Vancouver and had served as the most important settlement in the area for decades. The Colony of Vancouver Island also stamped their little feet and demanded that Victoria be designated as the capital in return for the island to join with the mainland to become part of Canada. Captain James Cook was the first British person to set foot on Vancouver Island in 1778, and in 1843, Fort Victoria was established by the Hudson's Bay Company. There is a long history of Vancouver Island serving as a naval base, and today, Victoria is the home of Canada’s Pacific Coast naval and military headquarters in nearby Esquimalt. Victoria is a top tourist destination and is regularly rated top 5 worldwide as an awesome place to live.

Jason Proctor is contributing to the CBC's live blog scroll from a legal perspective and as always, his stuff is illumniating. I'll paste his report in because it can get lost in the scroll easily.
"Creditors circle as cull looms
Jason Proctor
I'm Jason Proctor, a reporter with CBC Vancouver who looked into a series of lawsuits facing the owners of Universal Ostrich Farms Inc.
Last month, I spoke with three creditors who are watching today's ruling with great interest — and some skin in the game.
B.C. Supreme Court judges have ordered the farm's owners to repay debts worth more than $250,000 but, up until now, the creditors have been unable to collect. Normally in this kind of situation, a creditor would move to seize the business assets — but because in this case those assets are ostriches caught up in a legal battle, that's been challenging, to say the least.
All three creditors have tried to garnish the CFIA to intercept any money the agency might pay out as compensation for killing the birds (potentially up to $3,000 a bird, the CFIA says) but it remains to be seen how that will work. The creditors, however, told me they are anxious to recoup their losses.”

If you live in Montreal, Vancouver, or Victoria, congratulations. According to Condé Nast Traveler, those 3 Canadian cities were top destinations based on the results from its annual Readers' Choice Awards. No other country on the planet had 3 locations named on list of the best cities in the world for 2025. In the top 10 of large cities category, Vancouver was #7, and Montreal was #9. In the small cities category, Victoria was #1 for the 3rd consecutive year.
The article takes a few swipes at Toronto for being excluded as a top tourist destination. Why so mean?

Carney is a carbon industry plant.
nothing says environmental “blank cheque” to industry like: “voluntary certification program”.
"But operators have another compliance option, which some may find controversial because it could give industry players some more leeway. Operators can design their own approaches, providing a facility meets "methane intensity thresholds" that are on par with standards from "leading international voluntary certification programs.””
That's what private forest companies (Mosaic) on Vancouver Island use to claim they are following ‘best practices' as they clear cut whole sides of mountains and leave a 10m ‘riparian zone' around streams while falling trees right over them.
It's a license to make up their own rules and do whatever they want, wider impacts be damned.

Good Morning #Canada
Stanley Park is a 405-hectare public park in British Columbia, Canada, that makes up the northwestern half of Vancouver's Downtown peninsula, surrounded by waters of Burrard Inlet and English Bay. It opened in September of 1888 after negotiating a lease from the federal government who owned the land for $1 per year. On this day in 1889, it was renamed and dedicated in honour of Lord Stanley, 16th Earl of Derby, a British politician who had recently been appointed Governor General of Canada. It doesn't crack the top 10 of city parks in Canada (despite what the attached article states) but it's special because much of the park remains as densely forested as it was in the late 1800s, with about a half million trees, some of which stand as tall as 76 metres and are hundreds of years old.

The new fence is basically done!!
Funny story that will hit home to anyone on Vancouver Island:
Two days ago the builders hadn’t added the new top section to the big gate in the back. A very large buck/deer jumped the fence and bent the wire so they had to try and bend it back out the best they could”
This is particularly funny for us because the other side, near the chicken coop (before it was there) the old fencing was bent from an over-eager bear trying to climb in.
Just mother nature ensuring balance, new and old, bent and unbent.
I am glad we are now bylaw-compliant for the #poolpond and the edibles should be out of the reach of the larger animals (racoons and birds and cats and squirrels and whatever other small creatures are inescapable)
The arbutus tree is now leaning against the fence. We'll see if it gets the message and grows in a more vertical kind of way naturally relieving stress from the fence, or if we might have to provide in a portal.
The most surprising part they managed to conquer was lifting the grape as high as they did! Very satisfied with that development!

Good Morning #Canada
Happy Plush Animal Lover’s Day to all who celebrate this special holiday. Because we are an inclusive country, I hope all you Furries out there have a special day as well.
Today's holiday would be a good day to review Canada's top sports mascots because why not. Today, I learned that Curling Canada has a mascot, although it's not an animal. He/She has a curling stone for a head. I may disagree with the ranking - IMO, the Raptor should be ranked higher and Youppi! deserves #1 status - but overall, it's a decent collection of Canadian wildlife. The Canada Goose is missing, and sports teams are missing a lot of marketing mayhem by not having a Beaver mascot. I suspect there are some great mascots at lower levels of organized sport, or at the college/university level.

Good Morning #Canada
Last weekend our granddaughter visited to help decorate our tree and we watched Elf, a movie about #Christmas spirit, because we were feeling Christmassy. I think the majority of Canadians believe in the spirit of this season. We're a little bit more polite and kinder, if that's even possible, and underneath the snark, the passive aggressiveness, the ##ElbowsUp, is a pack of big cuddly beavers. You don't have to take my word for it because places like Quebec City, Banff, and Vancouver regularly end up on lists for best places to sit on Santa's knee. He lives in Canada so not a surprise. Did you know that in 2018, Canada was ranked as #1 most Christmassy country in the world. They can't put it on the internet if it isn't true.

Nothing more to be said here…
“An inmate who has pleaded guilty to murdering Robert Pickton in prison last year says he did it for the serial killer's victims.
Martin Charest admitted on Thursday morning to fatally assaulting Pickton with a broken broom handle at the Port-Cartier federal penitentiary in May 2024.
Charest pleaded guilty to first-degree murder during a court appearance in Sept-Îles, Que., northeast of Quebec City.
Pickton was convicted in 2007 of six counts of second-degree murder, but confessed to killing a total of 49 women whom he lured to his pig farm near Vancouver.
A statement of facts read out in court detailed how Charest locked himself into a room with Pickton and assaulted him twice while guards were unable to enter.
Charest told the judge he murdered Pickton after the serial killer had continued to brag about the murders and told other inmates he'd commit more crimes if he was ever released.”

Good Morning #Canada
Checking my fake holiday calendar, and I see it's Go For A Ride Day. I guess that could include cars, trains, skateboards, horses, and your favourite human, but let's focus on bicycles. Some people say Canada is too big to have a cycling culture and that's why there's only 1 bike for every 4 Canadians. But those are the people who have never heard of cities... or are named Doug Ford. Only 6% of Canadians are active commuters, meaning walking or biking, but it's more prevalent in Victoria (18.7%) and Halifax (12.3%). About one-third (34%) of neighbourhoods across Canada have no cycling infrastructure but some municipalities have invested in high-comfort bike lanes (dedicated & protected pathways), including Montréal (360 km), Vancouver (246 km), Edmonton (226 km) and Québec City (190 km).
Here's some #StatsCan data on commuting by bike.
