Vancouver BC is having its own No Kings rally right down by the US consulate on Pender. There is little space down there, so it's a pretty terrible spot for a gathering - ideally, the street would have been closed, particularly as bumping a vehicle up a curb and into the crowd would be simple - we had a deadly instance of that just last month.
Ironically, we do have a king here.

Interesting and fulsome interview on exactly how NORAD reacted to the plane hijacking in Victoria/Vancouver on Tuesday. They speak to the commander of NORAD, currently a Canadian.
I appreciated the last section most though:
“It's the only bi-national command in the world; it's been a strong bi-national command since 1958, and nothing has changed.
We don't ever talk politics at work. It's not something that we do, nor does it affect what we do.
I would say that we are as tight, and probably tighter than we've ever been. As the world around us gets to be more dangerous, I would say that NORAD is even closer than it's ever been.
But one last thing — we have the watch. That's the slogan here for NORAD.
To give you a great example, all of the assessors, we all live on-base in homes that actually have a safe, we call it the SCIF. It's basically a classified room that has all of our systems. The days that you're on duty, you're either at work or in your house. Because the timelines are so small for answering the phone, you don't walk the dog; you don't do all these other things, and someone covers for you when you're going between work and home.
That's how important this mission is to us down here. It's really important for everybody in Canada to know that at NORAD, we have the watch”

"Vancouver has 22 civic libraries. Victoria has 12. The streets of these two cities, however, have well over 1,000 unincorporated “little libraries”. You’ve seen them, of course. Those quaint little bird-house structures, placed along sidewalks, usually with a glassed-in front to keep the contents safe from the elements. Inside these little boxes there is always the oddest selection of books, and almost always something that will pique your interest. "

the City just put in Stage 1 restrictions (we're very lucky here that we have abundant water resources, many places on Vancouver Island have restrictions almost immediately every summer)
So the clock is ticking! If we get to Stage 2 and I haven't filled the pond yet, I'll be prohibited from doing so until the rains come! We can only "top up" pools and ponds in Stage 2. And (god forbid) we get into Stage 3 or 4, the pond will have to be left to dry up. (at which point I would probably just use it as a watering source for the gardens)
I don't think we've ever reached Stage 3. The last time we got to Stage 2 was about 5 years ago I think, after the Heat Dome.
I would be surprised if we got to Stage 2 this year. It has been dry, but not excessively hot, so hopefully our resources can hold through August.
The good news is... I'm close to at least filling the intake bay and wetland filter.
Once the rest of the rock/pebble comes tomorrow I'll immediately start moving the rock into those two holes as quickly as I can, and once done, I'll start filling them with water so I can test out the pumps.
I might set up a temporary path for the water to recirculate through the intake bay and filter, avoiding the pond. That way those two parts can start to grow good-bacteria for the filter while I work on the big pond.

British Columbians Could Enjoy Better City Elections
If the province would let them.
From Sightline Institute
In municipal elections across British Columbia, voters are stuck using bloc voting or ward voting, methods that can overrepresent one party or ideology at the expense of all others.
If not for a few lines of provincial law, local governments could adopt single transferable vote, a gold-standard form of proportional representation.

Fact: Taking a BC Ferry from Metro Vancouver to Vancouver Island is a High CO2 experience, though if it's a full ferry, it's not terrible (~5kgCO2/passenger)
By 2031, BC Ferries will have replaced 18 ferries (big and small!) in 15 years, and nearly all will be 100% electric-ready.
They just announced they're doing the big ships next.
"Built with diesel-battery hybrid propulsion systems and designed with the capability to operate on full electric power in future, the NMVs are expected to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve fuel efficiency, and lower underwater radiated noise to better protect marine life. With greater capacity than the vessels they replace, the NMVs will offer more space for vehicles and passengers and upgraded amenities, supporting a more reliable and comfortable travel experience.”
The age of fossil fuels is ending. Any politician or lobbyist who says otherwise is either not paying attention, or bought.
