Hyundai and Kia are rolling out Vehicle-to-Grid and Vehicle-to-Home tech across Korea, Europe, and the U.S., turning electric cars into mobile power banks. The systems let EVs store renewable energy, cut electricity costs, and provide backup power during outages or peak demand.
The Kia EV9 and the Hyundai IONIQ 9 are the two (enormous) cars that will be the first in the group to be used with a #V2G service. This will be launched in the Netherlands before being expanded to other markets and models (hopefully including more friendly ones).

Abstract: With the aim of meeting the worlds net-zero objectives, electricity trading through contractual agreements is becoming increasingly relevant in global and local energy markets. We develop contracts enabling efficient energy trading using Vehicle to Everything technology which can be applied to regulate energy markets and reduce costs and carbon emissions by using electric vehicles with bidirectional batteries to store energy during offpeak hours for export during peak hours. We introduce a contract based on the VCG mechanism which enables fleets of electric vehicles to export electricity to the grid efficiently throughout the day, where each electric vehicle has its energy consumption and exporting schedules and costs.

In a new Swedish V2G trial, parking enforcement vehicles will generate revenue not only during their money-making rounds on the streets, but also while parked in a garage: with #V2G, they will feed energy back into the grid at high prices and charge at low prices.
I've often wondered if a Canadian EV "Kei Car" type program would help the country achieve zero emission goals, provide affordable transportation, and reduce grid lock in our cities.
In 1949, Japan created a special category of keijidosha (light vehicles) created for affordability and maneuverability in dense cities. The Kei car quickly became popular despite strict limits on dimensions (length, width, height) and engine displacement (under 660cc). They were given unique license plates for enforcement purposes and had tax benefits for owners.
What if an "Ion" vehicle category was created in Canada:
- must be manufactured in Canada
- minimum 100Km range, suitable for any urban commute
- limited to 50Km/hr
- restricted to street use, not to be used on highways
- size restrictions, perhaps Smart Car sized for personal vehicles, larger for commercial vehicle category
How many city-dwelling Canadians would buy a cheap EV to run errands and give the finger to big oil?
