Alberta's oil industry overshadows the importance and size of their agricultural sector. It's one of only two provinces where the number of farms increased in the most recent StatsCan reports (2021), and their farms generate the highest revenues per operator in the country. Due to the dry climate in they have invested heavily in irrigation, and over 72% of all irrigated farmland in Canada is in Alberta. Oil seed and grains, and beef cattle, dominate with almost 70% of their 40K farms involved in those products. Alberta ranks worldwide as a top exporter of beef, wheat, canola, and pulse crops. Which is interesting because if they separated, they would be surrounded by border checkpoints and tangled up in customs negotiations as a tiny country.

Most of the time I’m a web developer. I work with TypeScript, React and all that jazz. But I still enjoy static site generators and good ol’ HTML/CSS.
In another life, I’m a documentary photographer and photojournalist. I’m interested in activism, art and culture, politics, and pretty much anything interesting happening on city streets. A big part of my photography journey involves documenting protests and demonstrations in Poland, especially those related to human rights and social issues. I’m also drawn to street art, particularly when it carries strong messages.
I occasionally blog and translate. Many years ago I wrote two books about WordPress. However, these days I’m more likely to go outside and touch grass than spend even more time in front of a screen.

BTW - that CBC article used a lot of numbers from this report, which because it's all numbers is awesome. Some tidbits:
- The number of farms over 3,500 acres has nearly doubled in 20 years.
- 41.3% of Canadian farmland is rented.
- From 1971 to 2021, the farm population declined by 62.2%, from 1 in 14 Canadians to 1 in 61.
- Farm debt has more than doubled in the last 20 years, from $43B in 2002 to $138.8B in 2022. That is currently 10x the size of net farm income.
- In 2021, 96,043 tonnes of pesticides were sold for agricultural use – more than three times the amount sold in 1991.

This concept was introduced in 2021 by Guo, Lang and Sheng as a Lie group analogue of Rota-Baxter operators of weight 1 on Lie algebras.
