Making Firefox/Mozilla dependent on money from Google was a gigantic misstep. It should never have happened.
Firefox has become an alibi for Google against claims of monopolistic behavior. It is a repeat of how Bill Gates saved Apple except that Firefox seems to be on permanently boxed in by Google.

My Google search arguments extension is live on the Firefox add-on marketplace https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/google-search-arguments/

So rather than paying them again (we still have the Guardian Weekly, against my better judgement), I accept and then use this Firefox/LibreWolf/Iceraven extension:

For anyone else who uses Firefox, and heard about https://blog.mozilla.org/en/firefox/address-bar/ and was wondering why e.g. @bookmarks wasn't working in their address bar, I happened upon the reason in my setup last night.

I remain foxed (pun intended) that Firefox still refuses to connect to an IoT device on my local IPv4 subnet unless that device supports TLS (HTTPS).
And I am further foxed that among the possible reasons for that refusal it does not list the possibility that the local device does not support HTTPS.
Once again I have to revert to another browser to do something that Firefox ought to be able to do (and once was able to do.)
Someone on lemmy mentioned that replacing "Russian XYZ" with "local meth head" makes news headlines much more fun.
I agree. So I installed a firefox extension that does this automatically: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/word-replacer-max/
Useful Firefox extension:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/android/addon/cookie-remover/
Cookie remover.
Now the Guardian can only be read by accepting biscuits, I do so then click the extension to immediately remove them.
@… Is there a reference on how Firefox determines if a video codec is hardware accelerated? I just installed Firefox on an old laptop I upgraded to Win11, and about: support shows every codec as accelerated, which is impossible as this is a 2nd gen Intel Core series. Thanks!
I'll test it on Apples.
I use the Orion browser on Apple computers. EFF's attempting to tell advertisers to USE EXPLICIT METHODS to control ads, and our privacy.
The Orion browser has its own "advanced" blockers.
But because it has Firefox extensions, it should "work" in Orion (the free browser by search engine company Kagi). Also, on iPads and iPhones, extensions work in Orion, but not Safari.
Privacy is a Human Right.
Hm, do Firefox and Vivaldi really not accept my system-wide custom CA(s)? On Windows, at least Firefox works fine if you set “security.enterprise_roots.enabled” to true, but on Linux it doesn't seem to make any difference. While in Firefox I can at least import a custom CA, I can't find anything similar in Vivaldi. 🤔

OK, so my @… (Firefox extension) just keeps saying my vault is empty. Even after restarting the browser. If I couldn't see my vault on other devices, I'd be having a panic attack right now.

I'm mad at websites that use code that make Firefox unusable. I'd prefer to use one browser, but at some sites I've found that links don't work as soon as one link have been clicked. All links are unclickable when I go back to an earlier side in the browser. Hi cromium, and thus, hi second set of plug-ins/extensions...

I built a Firefox extension that allows you to append arbitrary arguments/text to each Google query automatically. I will now go through whatever hell is required to get it onto the addon store. It's up on GitHub for the curious. https://github.com/theodric/ArgsGoogleSearches
If I accidentally press Ctrl-Q in Firefox I get a popup that asks me to confirm that I want to close my 5 Firefox windows¹. I don't care so much about the 5 windows but about my hundreds of tabs in them ;-)

It's complete madness, I now have to use several extensions in Firefox to stop autotranslating on sites like Youtube and Reddit, since there is no way to deactivate that in the settings of each site. The internet is getting more stupid everyday.
Where can I apply for more Mozilla services to be shut down, so they finally stop pestering me in #Firefox?
Okay. So I've entered the true void and gone over to the dark side. Firefox, with all its faults and failings (at least on the Mozilla part), remains an advocate for FOSS. Testdriving it now. Even experimenting with Mistral, one of their AI offerings. Still have Yokoffing's user.js installed though.
Firefox still deserves our support.
Bummer. Mozilla, makers of Firefox, are shutting down their "Pocket" and "Fakespot" services.
I use Fakespot constantly, every time I go to buy something from Amazon (or another supported retailer). I'd pay to use it, but it's going away. Ugh...

Working through slowly setting up my laptop with NixOS, I'm going GNOME Wayland cuz I know my laptop is old enough to not have too many problems with it and apparently PiP on Firefox is just broken, like fully broken, has been for up to 4 years.

I get that you need to FOCUS, but I'm personally bummed you are killing off #Pocket, as it's a service I use pretty much ** every single day! ** 😞 (I don't care about Fakespot )

I recently discovered a cool #firefox add-on called Auto Tab Discard.
It automatically unloads tabs after a certain period of time by default. Discard time is configurable, and you can also choose to discard only certain websites under certain conditions. You can also manually select tabs to keep or discard.
I started searching for a plugin for this because I had a lot of tabs ope…
If you are also annoyed by Firefox for some reason now trimming the protocol in the address bar you can fix that behavior by setting "browser.urlbar.trimURLs" in about:config to get URLs you can properly copy and use back.

I like these new #firefox tab groups. Very useful for grouping default sets of sites you use at different times of the day.
I have published an update to the 'Add Arguments to Google Searches' Firefox extension which permits appending the &udm=14 parameter to the results URL, fully eliminating all AI slop as well as any other hint of machine 'helpfulness' in Google results. The extension will also now install and run on both Firefox and Firefox for Android.
I do not know (yet!) what is going on with this Mac but it's running so incredibly slow it's unbearable. I can't even launch Firefox and opening a browser window shows the pinwheel of death...

Crikey, just (finally) nailed the 'family photo gallery in a frame' functionality for my mum (with failing memory, in an assisted living situation) across the world. Can control it from here in Aotearoa (via screen share or ssh) with the extraordinarily handy 'RaspberryPi Connect' functionality. The key technologies are:

Got `acme.sh` installed on all the Proxmox nodes and managed to get the certs issued and installed to the right location without too much hassle. All of the UIs now no longer anger the Firefox gods. Also all of the servers are updated and nothing is on fire. Time to relax and debate on what to eat for supper.

Tried Wayland Plasma 6 on openSUSE on a ThinkPad P14s G5 AMD last night:
-Firefox doesn't render properly
-TrackPoint is nearly unusably twitchy and doesn't respond to speed/acceleration settings
-Input latency makes it difficult to control the mouse pointer accurately

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=44246518 is that still named the slashdot effect, or is slashdot effect something for old people only?

Drove through the Blackwall Tunnel to Greenwich and back to Islington yesterday.
South of the river it's all 30MPH speed limits and everything feels too fast and scary compared to the sedate and pedestrian-friendly 20MPH limits in the north.
Since I last went through it, it seems the Blackwall tunnel has added a toll.
The TFL website for setting up to pay the tolls is absolutely awful. Failed in Librewolf, Failed in Firefox. Failed because VPN. Took me four attempts in three different browsers to get it to take payment card details.
Demands *no* special characters in the password?!? And doesn't even tell you what the specific problem with the password is, just "doesn't meet the rules above"
Uses awful validation questions like "mothers maiden name". Bad enough practice to use them at all, but the "memorable date" question restricts to ddmmyy format so you can't even put in a date from outside this century.
For some reason asks for a PIN and and Password both!? Pointless. Then actually refuses the login form if you supply both!?
Setting up the auto-payment doesn't seem to have covered the charges added to the registration plate yesterday, so had to do the payment-details entering yet again to deal with yesterday's charges.
Email validation message contains the link only in the HTML of the email, not the text version, so viewed in Mutt it has no link.
And this all seems to be separate from the Dartford Crossing charge, which had a less crappy but still pretty crappy signup.
Good god council programmers suck at web-dev.
