nice quote from Vivek Murthy
(interviewed by Eric Topol)
"... a triad of success ... a triad of fulfillment.
"... how does society define success for you? And they would tell me some version of money, fame, and power. If you had all three of those, then you really hit the lottery and people will write books about you, make documentaries about you, you'll have made it. But ... The triad to fulfillment is rooted in relationships, service, and purpose"

"How to get the most out of tech while freeing ourselves from the lunatics in Silicon Valley"
Says Ian Dunt in his article on a corporate Substack page linked from his block-chain owned Bluesky account.
He does so without using the words "Fedi" "blog", "decentralize" "open source", "free software", or "mastodon", and while calling Facebook and Instagram "seemingly more benign".
There must be a form of moderate tech disinvestment, which allows us the things we benefit from while removing the things which harm us.
He pleads, admitting
I have no answers for this
Yeah, no kidding.
But he has stopped using Amazon so much and buys more DVDs now, and tries to use a tablet more than a phone!?
Well done I guess.

I have spent a total of $1,447.25 on Substack subscriptions, almost entirely in the last year.
But I’ve always thought The Information at $400/year was way overpriced.
It’s easier to stomach when it’s one subscription at a time and I’m supporting specific creators.
Also I have Trump derangement syndrome.

"When she was in Congress, I disagreed with almost everything she said and every vote she made. But on the transcendent issue of our time — protecting our democracy from Trump and the forces of authoritarianism and fascism — Liz Cheney has been correct, clear, and courageous."

It’s infuriating that every Substack email comes with a “read in app” link but it just takes you to the App Store, even if you have the app installed already. If you then tap “Open”, it just opens the app; it doesn’t take you to the specific post you were trying to read.
Yes, websites can’t tell which apps you have installed. Which is why Substack should link to the web version with a Smart App Banner. Not rocket science, but I guess that would make it too easy to avoid the app??

Advice to the Players - Frank Bidart
There is something missing in our definition, vision, of a human being:
the need to make.
We are creatures who need to make.
Because existence is willy-nilly thrust into our hands, our fate is to
make something— if nothing else, the shape cut by the arc of our lives.
My parents saw corrosively the arc of their lives.
Making is the mirror in which we see ourselves...
