I honestly don’t get how this is possible in 2025.
There’s no excuse for not having protected backups of everything critical. That was true 30 years ago, it is true today. Back then a bigger piece of the risk was hardware, less malware. Today it is unlikely for a disk failure to take your data because we all learned that RAID was worthwhile. But RAID is not a backup and backups today need to be resistant to intentional malicious deletion.

I'm afraid this is true. I already struggle to raise enough money to keep the very talented young scientists I have working with me (from many different countries already), finding funding for more will be difficult, and why should US scientists essentially queue jump just because of their nationality ? I know that sounds harsh, I have very good US colleagues, but I have to be fair to all, regardless of where they come from. OTOH, if you are a US scientist and you are interested in exploring possibilities in Denmark, give me a shout and we'll see what we can do.

@… This is true, but I think there’s also a budget problem, in that the entire yearly budget for all Haskell tooling is approximately equivalent to a bag of oats and a nice juicy carrot.

I used to fantasize about video games wowing audiences by using AI to do things previously impossible.
Voiceovers using your chosen character name.
A “teleport in” effect using a latent space walk for a unique look.
Fighting game CPU opponents that feel human.
Pokémon games with all 1,025 mons and dozens of animations each.
But my fantasy will never come true. The features might appear, but anything AI will produce more controversy than wowing.

The reason I’m so fixated on Rudolf Rocker is that he understood authority and centralized control as inherently oppressive structures that suppress individual freedom and the collective ability to self-organize.
He argued that true freedom arises not from legal or political institutions, which often serve to maintain domination, but from the voluntary, free association of people resisting all forms of coercion and hierarchy.
For Rocker, political rights are not granted by govern…

The UK is still fixed in a view that in order to reduce debt, take care of an aging and medicated population and provide as high a standard of living as possible and the Govt to get re-elected.
But that is neither true nor practical. The only things that would stimulate the UK economy are a generationally large investment in infrastructure (both physical and electronic) or a similar size war.

#ScribesAndMakers for July 3: When (and if) you procrastinate, what do you do? If you don't, what do you do to avoid it?
I'll swap right out of programming to read a book, play a video game, or watch some anime. Often got things open in other windows so it's as simple as alt-tab.
I've noticed recently I tend to do this more often when I have a hard problem to solve that I'm not 100% sure about. I definitely have cycles of better & worse motivation and I've gotten to a place where I'm pretty relaxed about it instead of feeling guilty. I work how I work, and that includes cycles of rest, and that's enough (at least, for me it has been so far, and I'm in a comfortable career, married with 2 kids).
Some projects ultimately lose steam and get abandoned, and I've learned to accept that too. I learn a lot and grow from each project, so nothing is a true waste of time, and there remains plenty of future ahead of me to achieve cool things.
The procrastination does sometimes impact my wife & kids, and that's something I do sometimes feel bad about, but I think I keep that in check well enough, and for things my wife worries about, I usually don't procrastinate those too much (used to be worse about this).
Right now I'm procrastinating a big work project by working on a hobby project instead. The work project probably won't get done by the start of the semester as a result. But as I remind myself, my work doesn't actually pay me to work during the summer, and things will be okay without the work project being finished until later.
When I want to force myself into a more productive cycle, talking to people about project details sometimes helps, as does finding some new tech I can learn about by shoehorning it into a project. Have been thinking about talking to a rubber duck, but haven't motivated myself to try that yet, and I'm not really in doldrums right now.

One of the things that I think has always been a benefit of C is that old code has generally continued to work with new code due to how conservative language changes have been. I think C23 is going to cause some pain though, and since GCC now defaults to the C23 standard that's kind of important.
For 50 years everyone has been defining their own boolean types in C due to the language not having that facility built in. Now we get 'bool', 'true' and 'false' a…

Here’s the real actual definition of “artificial intelligence,” the true technical meaning in research and engineering circles when it’s not being used as marketing hype.
Artificial intelligence is anything that
1. humans are generally good at, and
2. computers were recently bad at.
That’s it. That’s all it means. You’ll hear people refine it and dress it up, but that’s the heart of the definition. (Check Wikipedia!)

Checked. Seems to be true.

Picture of Ivana, Don Jr., Eric, and Ivanka Trump.
Seems like a good day to remind everyone that Trump’s ex-wife, Ivana, wasn’t an American citizen until 1988. She gave birth to Don Jr. in 1977, Ivanka in 1981, and Eric in 1984.
Let’s cancel their birthright citizenship first.

I've just saw a van painted to make an illusion of being broken in half. Like, there's a black crack painted in the middle, all horizontal lines are tilted and there's even a slight black triangle painted on top to enhance the impression. I found it really hard to perceive its true shape.

Terry Glavin is the biggest anti-indigenous racist, residential school genocide denier-journalist in all of Canada. (he's also a big Yellow Peril kind of guy which I got into it with him once on Twitter before he blocked me)
Imagine calling lowering flags to half mast for six months due to the nation coming to grips with the DEATH OF THOUSANDS OF CHILDREN "a national psychotic episode"
What an asshole.

Reverse Physics Rap Battle: String Theory vs Loop Quantum Gravity - 😆
Take the top expert in each of two competing theories, and assign each to defend the other's theory. I can't recall the last time I laughed so hard. Best of all, it's all true and they both know it, but yes, one has had 'promising' results for more decades than the other. 🤣

After his Ignoble Disgrace, Satan was being expelled from
Heaven. As he passed through the Gates, he paused a moment in thought,
and turned to God and said, "A new creature called Man, I hear, is soon
to be created."
"This is true," He replied.
"He will need laws," said the Demon slyly.
"What! You, his appointed Enemy for all Time! You ask for the
right to make his laws?"
"Oh, no!" Satan replied…

If you recognize this figure, you’re definitely a true classic connoisseur—only the most dedicated fans would know!

They wear a crisp white fencing uniform, set against a softly blurred background of dark foliage, conveying a sense of discipline and calm determination.

(Check Wikipedia!)

you've heard of chemists in the 30's
are you prepared for chemists in the 1830's?
moreover, bunsen himself?

History
Robert Wilhelm Bunsen coined the name kakodyl (later modified to cacodyl in English) for the dimethylarsinyl radical, (CH3)2As, from the Greek κακώδης kakōdēs ("evil-smelling") and ὕλη hylē ("matter").

It was investigated by Edward Frankland and (for over six years) by Robert Bunsen and is considered the earliest organometallic compound discovered (even though arsenic is not a true metal). Bunsen began studying it in the 1830s and had determined its chemical composition by 1843; during…

So this was a sweet moment.
Mamdani has received supportive words from both Senator Chuck Schumer…
And Governor Kathy Hochul…
Hopefully, formal endorsements are forthcoming.
An unintended, but hopeful consequence of Mamdani’s win is that, at 33 years old, he has inspired other young people to want to run for office themselves.…
