Rule of thumb: End-to-end encryption is meaningless unless you know and control exactly who the ends are. (Let’s call this the Waltz principle.)
Same goes unless the context your encrypted messenger is running in is secure. Signal can encrypt your messages all day long but you’re still screwed if the custom keyboard app you installed on your phone is sending them off to someone else before they even reach Signal.

Living in a capitalist society makes me simultaneously hate and understand some things.
Back when the Sunday shopping ban was set in Poland by one of the right-wing parties (with some exceptions for petty capitalists, of course), I was outraged. Why are they forcing their religious customs on me?! But nowadays, I do realize that in a capitalist society, where employment laws are full of loopholes and employers explicitly punish employees for taking a day off, an obligatory no-business day is the only way.
On top of that, after living next to a supermarket for a few years… this is literally the only way to have a quiet day, without cars driving, and car doors slamming all the time. And of course night time deliveries, because you obviously can't lose day's business over such things.
And what I hate even more are these multi-day holidays and long weekends, where suddenly all my routine falls apart, and I can't really enjoy holidays while the train timetable is randomly punctuated. But then, I do realize that obligatory multi-day holidays are the only way for many people to simultaneously have a day off and be able to meet their families and friends.
I'm not really compatible with the world I'm living in.

It is far too late in the day for me to try to figure out how to turn a github PR with one file change into an actual patch that applies cleanly to either the latest FreeBSD binary build or the latest version in ports (i.e. current release.) I figured out how to get Github to give me an actual patch file (why is this not a button???) but it’s against some intermediate version and <sigh>.
Maybe I just need to wander off into the woods. I’ll freeze to death soon enough…

I've spent the past year learning Morse code, and it's ended up being a great deal of fun. I've had a lot of questions. I've tried to share what I've learned with others as I've gone along.
To celebrate the end of the year, I wrote a combination of information, story, and advice. How to get started, mobile apps and websites, books, getting on the air, learning to send, POTA, SST, keys and keyers. I'm not fluent or expert yet, but that means that I still remember what's hard!

Here’s an interesting little curio. Was hanging at a friend's place and the conversation wandered to ancient times; when she was 16, an upstate-New-York girl, she took off with a carload of friends and went to Woodstock. She pulled out an original program, dropped from a helicopter near stage-front, and her ticket, uncanceled because by the time they got there the systems had broken down.
A lot of their strategies are like spammers and phishers: they’re kind of stupid, they’re kind of lazy, but they just spend all day trying — and they only have to catch somebody off guard once. And so while they lazy it up, we have to remain in a state of ceaseless vigilance…because as we all know from phishing scams, everybody slips up eventually.

Years ago, I started saying "have a great day" and "I love you" every morning to my kids when sending them off to preschool or school. I did it because I had a realization there's a possibility, however remote, this morning could be the last time I say something to them, and I wanted it to be something good.
I can't imagine the heartache the parents feel who sent their kids off to school, preschool, or even college, to never see them again.

In both cases, it happened out of my sight. I had no idea what was going on.

Cowboys’ Brian Schottenheimer Reveals What Changed for RB Malik Davis https://heavy.com/sports/nfl/dallas-cowboys/brian-schottenheimer-malik-davis-cut-return/
Totally normal problems.
So one day I had trouble zipping my winter jacket; around the final teeth, the zipper would stop catching. And when I tried again, I couldn't zip anything at all. Finally, at nth careful attempt it finally worked, and I had no more trouble that day. When I've turned, we looked at it, and decided that a loose thread must have gotten into it while zipping. Cut the thread off.
Next day, the zipper worked just fine in the morning. However, when I was about to leave the train, it suddenly stopped working. It seemed that I'm up for a cold day in unzipped jacket, but it finally caught a few minutes later, on the road. This time, I suspected the zipper. Tightened it, it started working again.
Today, I've tried zipping it three times to make sure it really works. And of course, as soon as I arrived at the destination, it refused to zip. I've tried again while walking, and it fell apart completely. Fortunately, the wind stopped blowing, and walking on snow was hard enough to jumpstart my metabolism fast. Finally, I've replaced the zipper and now everything works.

The conference is over now. I likely wouldn't have come for just a bitcoin thing, but I am very interested in redecentralizing the web, so it's attachment to the nostr day pulled me in.
Everyone I met was friendly and interesting and seems much more interested in making a better money system than in making money for themselves.
Our government and bank money systems are dysfunctional in all kinds of ways which are often less visible than they should be too people using them, especially to those in Europe and America who benefit from the way those systems exploit the global south.
I'm not convinced that fixing that would end wars and fix broken government as some seem to think, but I am sure our money is the source of many problems.
There are many bright, well meaning, and intelligent people building to improve bitcoin in fascinating ways with the hope of having a parallel system to transition to. With lots of work still to be done.
Can it work?
I'm sure I don't know, and I'm sure even if it's a better system it'll come with it's own unfairness and cruelty. Money will continue to be a source of suck and worry.
I'm told that the bigger conferences are often full of shitcoin scammers and suit wearing banksters who are in fact all in it too get rich and rip people off, but I found none of that here.
Here there is a real community of people trying to make the world a better place and improve the lives of their neighbours and governance of their countries.
And in the end building community is the most radical and effective way to change the world regardless of the problems of it's money system.
I had a great time. Thanks to those organising it.

I am from a big family and when we were young we always had family over on Christmas Day. This being the 1970s & 1980s, it meant my mum spent hours and hours and hours in the kitchen both on Christmas morning and most of Christmas Eve too.
So the one thing she wasn't going to do was cook an evening meal on Christmas Eve, instead we always used to get a chinese takeaway on December 24th. My dad used to save up several months worth of the Luncheon Vouchers he got from work and he'd get us a big blow-out feast from the local chinese takeaway.
I'll be spending only a sensible amount of time in the kitchen tomorrow but traditions are traditions, so I'm off down the chinese takeaway shortly. No Luncheon Vouchers, though!
