We need more folks who understand POSSE and why it's crucial to a) personal digital sovereignty, b) functional open (democratic) societies, and c) a free and open Internet: Publish on your Own Site, Syndicate Elsewhere.

A Professor at Toronto Metropolitan University:
“The Government of Canada could easily decide that it was going to use LinkedIn or Instagram or wherever it posts, and journalists would switch to following them there because they want to access what they’re saying,” he continued. “There was zero audience for Truth Social when
Trump created and started using it, but the audience went to the politician. Carney and his government could take a principled position by leaving X and its horrible spawn, Grok, and his audience of journalists and politicos would go with them.”
“Apparently, our political leaders simply choose not to.”
YES!! #Fediverse #SocialWeb #Mastodon
As always a huge thank you for the Senator's @… ongoing activism. It WILL happen. (and by it I mean, government going to the social web... Bluesky is just a temporary blip until it too goes fascist or we get some proper digital sovereignty laws in place.)

Part 2 - Summary of discussion
- @ZebKing has been chatting with Avi Lewis about a presence in the Fediverse — Mastodon.
- He requested assistance, looking for champions to bring politicians to Mastodon. Every new party leader on Mastodon is a win for digital sovereignty & an act of defence & patriotism for #Canada.
- Challenges for political parties and government officials to use #Mastodon:
1) Adoption by Canadians remains low. If a government agency researches the possible reach on the platform they will numbers rank well below other platforms.
2) Although it's getting easier, just getting started is still more difficult than alternatives.
- Suggestion for a strategy:
1) Make Mastodon a symbol that our government is reducing/eliminating reliance on U.S. controlled social media.
2) Get The Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat, who sets policy and guidelines on government use of social media, to add Mastodon to their policies, and potentially recommend Mastodon as the preferred platform.
Even before Microsoft Azure had a global failure this week,
Austria's Ministry of Economy had taken a decisive step toward digital sovereignty.
The Ministry is migrating 1,200 employees to a Nextcloud-based cloud and collaboration platform hosted on Austrian-based infrastructure
It's the latest move in a European trend to shift away from Big Tech.
European governments and agencies want to control sensitive data.
Bingo: "awareness is growing that digital autonomy is no longer a luxury but a prerequisite for a well-functioning democracy." https://ginaplat.com/posts/20251031-digital-sovereignty-and-gov/ Thanks for this, @…
5. “But what are we supposed to do exactly?!” − Fight for digital sovereignty. Fight for a more independent financial system. Stop honoring US pharma patents. Form large coalitions to threaten economic sanctions. Limit travel, or increase the friction of it. Target the comfort of the billionaires who are bankrolling this. There is a long list of actions countries can take if •and only if• their populations create the political pressure for it.
Finally uninstalled #feedly in favour of #freshRss and #capyreader. My wife is interested as well to switch.
Calendar still bugs me a bit. I could check this this weekend maybe.

“[open social] must be funded like infrastructure, not consumer apps. In fact, given the scale of hybrid threats, it should be funded from defense budgets, not innovation leftovers.
The strategic layer of democracy is the information layer. And right now, it is outsourced.” @seabass.bsky.social

"“I’m going back to the #Fediverse. Back to #Mastodon. To the nerds, the hobbyists, the idealists. The people who don’t talk about reach, but about relevance. To those who understand that decentralization isn’t nostalgic, it’s the future. That digital sovereignty isn’t a gimmick, it’s a survival…

“Europe is hurtling toward digital vassalage. Under Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission president, EU laws to tackle tech giants have been either not applied or delayed, for fear of offending Donald Trump. Now leaked documents reveal that the European Commission plans to gut a central part of Europe’s digital rulebook. This will hurt Europe’s innovators and hand the future of Europe’s tech sovereignty to US firms.…
Was in a trolly mood so I submitted a "Decomputing" talk to a conference on "digital sovereignty". Let's see how that lands.

why the world needs to log off corporate-owned, centrally-controlled social media platforms

The world needs an open social web through the fediverse and Mastodon.

This is an EXCELLENT article on digital sovereignty, and everyone should read it right now.

Good news, any progress in more federated social media is a good thing in my view.

Updated my list what I moved away from BigTech. To be honest: when I started it, I didn't expect the amount of time & energy it takes to get out.
Therefore I regard it as crucial to just do it step by step. Otherwise you might get overwhelmed. And some nasty dependencies will just show up along the way ... but it's a nice hobby!
Yes, digital sovereignty for all things in Canada is a good idea.
That doesn’t mean insulating us from the world: open collaboration with others still fits with this.
Buying from a vendor with nothing of our own (especially from an American vendor) is not the way.

"Digital Sovereignty" as a term always has the implicit danger of fueling nationalist narratives. We should be finding better terms, I like @… 's "resilient infrastructure" framing.
It is time for a Digital Sovereignty Act in Canada. @…
