Citizens United is the court decision that essentially ended meaningful campaign finance law in the United States.
Billionaires and centi-millionaires started gaining publicity and critical reactions to the scale of their spending and the impact it had on elections.
Political giving at scale by the extremely wealthy wasn’t new.
Perhaps the difference was the internet.
Whatever it was, the years after 2010 spawned the idea that the very wealthy and the extremely powe…

Sheriffs with shields and batons.
You don't often see it expressed in a visible way like this, but such state violence ultimately backs up all property ownership. Homelessness only exists because if people entered and made a home in a vacant or underused property, the state would use essentially unlimited force to evict them.

Most American electoral districts operate on a winner-take-all basis, especially for congressional and state legislative elections. This system, known formally as single-member plurality (first-past-the-post), means that the candidate who receives the most votes in a district wins the seat, and all other votes are essentially disregarded in the final result.
Gerrymandering is to all intents and purposes the inevitable consequence of lacking a democratic system with proportional represe…

Good Morning #Canada
In August 1998, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that Quebec could not legally secede from Canada unilaterally. The court's decision affirmed that any secession would require a constitutional amendment negotiated with the federal government and other provinces. This ruling stemmed from a reference case initiated by the federal government following a close referendum on Quebec sovereignty in 1995. Although Quebec was represented at the Supreme Supreme Court hearing, they did not participate in presenting arguments. They essentially ignored the ruling and planned a future referendum, which never happened.
This ruling established an important precedent that Alberta separatists should pay attention to. But details such as this ruling, aboriginal rights, or common sense seem to escape their attention spans.

"New technologies, when introduced, are typically given names that overstate their capabilities, usually by equating them with existing familiar systems or technological artefacts. For example the first computers in the 1940s and 1950s, often little more than glorified electric adding machines, were nevertheless described as “electronic brains”. More recently, large language models (LLMs) have been touted as “artificial intelligence”, and complex physics experiments have been touted as …

Update after talking to the student office: The student had called the student office and then chose to ignore essentially everything they had been told; and then they basically lied to us about having officially submitted the thesis.
Good thing I don’t trust anyone anymore.

Trump is so open for (corrupt) business that he’s potentially profiting millions
from a deal with a mysterious crypto company
whose owners and intentions are essentially unknown, at least to those outside Trump’s circle.
However, as is the norm under this administration, the losers are crystal clear: the American people.

Btw. about 6 months ago the Anthropic CEO said that by now 50% of all code would be written by LLMs.
How does that prediction relate to the reality we all live in and what does that say about his ability to make predictions about the future?

Computers have been around us in everyone’s everyday lives for at least the last 50 to 75 years.
Yet the vast majority of people, and that’s including people who are programmers and software designers, are essentially illiterate about them.
They’re not magical. Stop treating them like they are.

“The Homeless have to move out, IMMEDIATELY,”
Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform Sunday morning,
shortly after being driven from the White House to his golf club in Virginia.
“We will give you places to stay,
but FAR from the Capital.”
Trump’s post promoted a previously announced news conference on Monday,
which he has promised,
“will, essentially, stop violent crime” in the capital district,
without explaining how.

Trump’s tariff threats have turned into a play for cold, hard cash
as he tries to leverage U.S. economic power to cajole other nations to make multibillion-dollar investments in order to maintain access to America’s market.
The president’s second-term trade agenda has clear echoes of his “Mob Boss” approach,
essentially demanding that trading partners show him the money in the form of investment pledges or else face astronomically high tariffs
