Trump targets foreign-born citizens for denaturalization

It should also be noted that beyond the ethical, political and environmental issues with this is that it doesn't work:
1. There is on average no mid to long term productivity gain with actual real-world software development that isn't just a "wow see what it can do" demo. (Multiple studies have shown that now.)
2. It won't help with 90% of the work when professionally making software, which, believe it or not, isn't coding. 90% of the work is designing and planning the software (these are things that happen both upfront and during development).
Maybe you have seen the recent Microsoft thing rolling back features in Windows they added?
E.g. Copilot in Notepad. What they did is essentially outsourcing project management to developers who then outsourced it to LLMs. But an LLMs can't plan and design software, and arguably barely can even generate code that works (as in reliable and performant). So now they have a buggy mess with features no one wants and they're rolling it back.
There's no silver bullets in software development.
As an ethical AI user, I begin each session by asking the chatbot to give a stolen data acknowledgement. It is an important first step toward justice.

I could go on for hours about all the ethical/moral/environmental/whatever issues with #AI, but it’s entirely irrelevant and I’ll tell you why. Generative AI works by getting the average of things, and it’s trying to replace humans. There is no average human. We’re all beautifully, naturally imperfect, and that’s something an artificial machine will never be able to replicate.
"Even if #OpenAI was run by decent, ethical, friendly, trustworthy people (which would then of course make them not work on the products OpenAI has, but it’s just a thought experiment) their products would need to be criticized for what they are and what they do." — @…

Very nice article. You might like the popularization of how a LLM works, if you don't know already.
I personally appreciate the last third of it, about the meaning for coding tools, and about how single-purpose models could theoretically be so much more useful. (And - my addition - they could do so while being ethical and efficient too.)
This is such an unfortunate name though 😂

With a name like that, do we trust them or *not* trust them?

You may be surprised that the money in your checking account is being used to fund oil drilling. It's worth it to move to a new bank/credit union to avoid that.
You can check your bank, and find a better one, here:

A lot of people will call shunning Amazon, Meta, etc "purity politics". According to them, since no company is perfect, we should just give up having lines, since there is no ethical consumption under capitalism.
Alternatively, it can be seen as exercising whatever little direct power we have, as individuals, to stop funding the machines that are killing us and making us poorer. It's not enough, but it's certainly a start.
Good to see more free/open source projects move off the proprietary ai-scraping microsoft github platform to codeberg etc.
I think it's fair to say that projects left behind there aren't really free/open source.. Many aren't able to contribute to projects there for ethical reasons (e.g. microsoft's association with genocide, epstein, extractive LLMs, Trump, ICE etc), and github now exists to strip software of free/open source licenses.
Now my CV Editor plugin for #indiekit is able to handle both personal projects or work projects https://rmendes.net/cv/
On March 9th I’m helping launch AI Foundations for Educators, a 5-week online course that goes beyond workshop-level knowledge to guide teachers and school staff in developing a personalized framework for adapting classrooms to AI.
It’s a pilot module for a planned online certificate on generative AI; would count as credit toward that graduate credential. Open to anyone with a BA.
"Auto detailing"? Never really seen a car with a tail, so it's probably just a scam. And if it weren't, I have deep ethical concerns about removing said tails.

Whenever a #FreeSoftware project is suffering from onslaught of low quality LLM-generated pull requests, there will be a bunch of #LLM lovers complaining that people shouldn't be talking of "LLM-generated" being part of the problem, because "using AI isn't bad" in itself. Of course, they entirely ignore all the ethical and environmental concerns, and probably write crappy code themselves.
