The People We Cannot See: What Dark Matter Galaxies Tell Us About Invisible Life
In February 2026, astronomers confirmed the existence of a galaxy called CDG-2 that is, for all practical purposes, invisible. Sitting in the Perseus galaxy cluster some 300 million light-years from where you are reading this sentence, CDG-2 is 99% dark matter. It was not found by its starlight, because it has almost none. It was found by four globular clusters huddled together in the…

And people keep being suprised by the regular genocides that *keep fucking happening*. And yes, call what ICE is doing what it is. It is a gencoide. Even if it's not killing millions of people (yet), the "genocide" doesn't mean "killing logs of people" it means "trying to wipe out a specific ethnic, racial, or religious group." What the fuck is ICE trying to do? They're carrying out ethnic cleansing. It's genocide.
Genocide in Gaza, genocide in Syria, genocide in Turkey, China, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Serbia... why the fuck does it keep happening? I'll tell you why. It's states.
People like to think of countries and ethnic reagions as the same thing, but they aren't. They never have been. There's never been clear divisions between ethnic groups. But the existence of the state depends on a shared identity. When the truth is more complicated, the state must find a way to fix that. The solution is genocide. You can't separate the two. There can be no state without genocide. The mechanism to carry ou the kind of mass murder and the incentive to do so are really not easy to put together without the state. The state makes genocide viable, and the state demands genocide to protect it's own existence.
Every election is a dice roll. Every state is on a clock, waiting for the luck to run out. And the worst people possible are just waiting for their chance to win and carry out those genocides in order to lock in their power.
Never again means nothing unless you are attacking the root of genocide: the state.

It’s a relatively new thing that travel, buying certain things, alcohol consumption etc requires a photo ID.
All of this surveillance and privacy-invasive shit (make people carry around the address where they live, wtf?) has been pressed into existence to “protect the children” and in the name of “fighting criminals”.
It’s all bullshit and we should end requiring it.

The state has become an existential threat to humanity in multiple ways. Not only are we *all* at risk of being killed at any time by the monsterous incompetence and malice of these systems (yeah, listen to this: iheart.com/podcast/105-behind-), but we are also slowly being killed by systems enforced and protected by these same entities.
States won't fix climate change. Ecocide is enabled by the existence of states.
Maybe... just maybe... it's time to think of other ways to organize ourselves.

Kelvin wave and soliton propagation in classical viscous vortex filaments

Abstract: Vortex filaments are highly rotating localized structures of fluids that admits several types of excitation. Here, we study them by using numerical simulations of the three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. We first address the propagation of Kelvin waves, helicoidal excitations propagating along the filament, and measure their dispersion relation which turns out to be in good agreement with the original Lord Kelvin predictions. Then, inspired by the connection between vortex line dynamics and an integrable system, we show numerically the existence of solitons propagating along vortex filaments and study the collision of two of such structures. Finally, we show numerically the experimental feasibility of studying vortex solitons in the lab, by proposing an experiment for their generation.

Abstract: Given a standard graded algebra over a field, we consider the relationship between G-quadraticity and the existence of a Koszul filtration. We show that having a quadratic Gr\"obner basis implies the existence of a Koszul filtration for toric algebras equipped with the degree reverse lexicographic term order and for algebras defined by binomial edge ideals. We also resolve a conjecture of Ene, Herzog, and Hibi by constructing an example where this implication fails. These results are underpinned by algorithms we develop for constructing Koszul filtrations. We also demonstrate the utility of these algorithms on the pinched Veronese algebra.

Bright Fractional Single and Multi-Solitons in a Prototypical Nonlinear Schr{\"o}dinger Paradigm: Existence, Stability and Dynamics

arxiv.org/abs/2602.17175 arxiv.org/pdf/2602.17175 arxiv.org/html/2602.17175
arXiv:2602.17175v1 Announce Type: new
Abstract: In the present work we explore features of single and pairs of solitary waves in a fractional variant of the nonlinear Schr{\"o}dinger equation. Motivated by the recent experimental realization of arbitrary fractional exponents, upon quantifying the tail properties of such coherent structures, we detail their destabilization when the fractional exponent $\alpha$ acquires values $\alpha<1$ and showcase how the relevant destabilization is associated with collapse type phenomena. We then turn to in- and out-of-phase pairs of such waveforms and illustrate how they generically exist for arbitrary $\alpha$ when we cross the harmonic limit, i.e., for $\alpha>2$. Importantly, we use the parameter $\alpha$ as a ``bifurcation parameter'' in order to connect the harmonic ($\alpha=2$) and biharmonic ($\alpha=4$) limits. Remarkably, not only do we retrieve the instability of all solitonic pairs in the biharmonic case, but showcase a stabilization feature of particular branches of such multipulses that is {\it unique} to the fractional case and does not arise -- to our knowledge -- for integer multi-pulse settings. We explain systematically this stabilization via spectral analysis and expand upon the implications of our results for the potential observability of fractional multipulse solitary waves.

Abstract: We study a generalisation of B\"uchi-Landweber games to the timed setting. The winning condition is specified by a non-deterministic timed automaton, and one of the players can elapse time. We perform a systematic study of synthesis problems in all variants of timed games, depending on which player's winning condition is specified, and which player's strategy (or controller, a finite-memory strategy) is sought. As our main result we prove ubiquitous undecidability in all the variants, both for strategy and controller synthesis, already for winning conditions specified by one-clock automata. This strengthens and generalises previously known undecidability results. We also fully characterise those cases where finite memory is sufficient to win, namely existence of a strategy implies existence of a controller. All our results are stated in the timed setting, while analogous results hold in the data setting where one-clock automata are replaced by one-register ones.

Abstract: An algebraic approach is presented for the valuative interpolation problem, which recovers and generalizes prior characterizations known in the complex analytic setting by the authors. We use the asymptotic Samuel function to give the characterization of the existence of valuative interpolation. We also give a characterization of the existence in the infinite valuative interpolation problem.

The existence of Israel is a manifestation of European antisemitism, both historically justifying the project of Zionism and European governments continuing to fund Israel instead of addressing the core role of antisemitism in maintaining (at least) the conservative elements of the neoliberal order.
If antisemitism props up Israel, then a core part of dismantling Israel (and thus saving the lives of Palestinians) is addressing European antisemitism. There are Israeli Jews who would leave if they felt safe to do so. There are Jews demanding Israel be armed, because they don't feel safe anywhere else.
Protest, boycott, take whatever action you feel is appropriate. There is a limit to your ability to convince governments to stop funding genocide, but you can learn about antisemitism and you can work to fight it, especially within "The Left." You can learn to distinguish between legitimate critiques of Israel, and antisemitic ones, and you can stand and call out antisemitic ones.
Honestly, this is some of the easy work that I think a lot of people don't consider even doing, don't even realize it is a thing that can be done.
I'm talking to Israeli folks who identify as being on the Left. It's hard because they've been through a lot of propaganda. Israel is a cult that terrorizes its members. This is important work that can have a huge impact, because it focuses on dismantling the networks of support that reinforce what's happening now.
Meanwhile, I still run into wild things like "Rothschild" conspiracy theories among people who identify with the idea of supporting Palestinians.
Not only can you support the liberation of Palestine and the Palestinian people while opposing antisemitism, but you must actually do both in order to do either. They are exactly the same fight, and anything short of both is thrashing against oneself.

"There has to be a better way than these custom, non-standard solutions [to tracking users through URL parameters]? Well, some clever people at [the biggest user-tracking company in existence, which introduced many of them] thought the same and decided to tackle this [by introducing new protocol-level server-side parameters that only a tiny fraction of companies is going to care about, never mind implement]."

Rewriting Systems on Arbitrary Monoids
Eduardo Magalh\~aes
arxiv.org/abs/2601.10564 arxiv.org/pdf/2601.10564 arxiv.org/html/2601.10564
arXiv:2601.10564v1 Announce Type: new
Abstract: In this paper, we introduce monoidal rewriting systems (MRS), an abstraction of string rewriting in which reductions are defined over an arbitrary ambient monoid rather than a free monoid of words. This shift is partly motivated by logic: the class of free monoids is not first-order axiomatizable, so "working in the free setting" cannot be treated internally when applying first-order methods to rewriting presentations.
To analyze these systems categorically, we define $\mathbf{NCRS_2}$ as the 2-category of Noetherian Confluent MRS. We then prove the existence of a canonical biadjunction between $\mathbf{NCRS_2}$ and $\mathbf{Mon}$.
Finally, we classify all Noetherian Confluent MRS that present a given fixed monoid. For this, we introduce Generalized Elementary Tietze Transformations (GETTs) and prove that any two presentations of a monoid are connected by a (possibly infinite) sequence of these transformations, yielding a complete characterization of generating systems up to GETT-equivalence.

Learning-augmented smooth integer programs with PAC-learnable oracles

Abstract: This paper investigates learning-augmented algorithms for smooth integer programs, covering canonical problems such as MAX-CUT and MAX-k-SAT. We introduce a framework that incorporates a predictive oracle to construct a linear surrogate of the objective, which is then solved via linear programming followed by a rounding procedure. Crucially, our framework ensures that the solution quality is both consistent and smooth against prediction errors. We demonstrate that this approach effectively extends tractable approximations from the classical dense regime to the near-dense regime. Furthermore, we go beyond the assumption of oracle existence by establishing its PAC-learnability. We prove that the induced algorithm class possesses a bounded pseudo-dimension, thereby ensuring that an oracle with near-optimal expected performance can be learned with polynomial samples.

The hard turn of the liberal established media (NYT, Guardian) against trans existence is puzzling.
The whole anti-trans obsession that has bubbled up in recent years is weird. It almost feels like a concerted project but it’s too big, right?
I mean, there just aren’t that many trans people to be upset about. It’s easy to go for years without knowing that you’ve interacted with a trans person, mostly because it’s a non-issue for most folks. @…

Read "How To Survive In A Science Fiction Universe" by Charles Yu, a novel about a time-machine repair-man getting stuck in a loop during his search for his father.
First person narrated, in a fictional universe in which you can travel in time but you can't change anything about the past.
It was fun and an easy read, lots of interludes about the physics of fictional universes and explanations of acausal items causing their own existence, including the book itself that you read in your hands.
Its nice if you'd like something with experimental narrative form twisting the usual story format.
