We have few clues. We know there were at least 2 big eruptions in the 530s, most likely in Iceland, Kamchatka, or Alaska: nowhere with a surviving writing culture. Then a wave of Plague. Then probably other shit no one bothered writing down. It shattered the recording of history for many decades. We will never have a comprehensive history of the “Dark Ages” because no one wrote the pieces.

systemd definitely does get many things right. My current favorite is how it sets the system resolver to loopback and provides an own DNS server.
Common Linux tradition was to tell processes to use getaddrinfo, where nsswitch then provides configurable backends. That means that every process goes through loading /etc/nsswitch.conf, but worse, it reduces DNS to a terrible subset. Query SVCB records? tough luck, you're on your own.

Finished 1923 this week. Doesn't have the elŠn of Yellowstone/1883, esp when it comes to dialogue, but was a very solid ride nonetheless. My favorite thing is how they brought the era to life.

Calamus 13 "Calamus taste"
A celebration of nature in March, an entreaty to enjoy and nurture growth. Both botanical and metaphorical, our personal growth. Some lovely turns of phrase:

But I'm here for the gay reading. The erotic is latent in all this burgeoning spring. But it's also more explicit. That first line "Calamus taste" sure is promising if we understand Calamus as a phallic symbol. Then there's the "pinks of love", the "young persons wandering out in the fields", the "love-buds".
It's not porny or anything but it's a little horny. The physical exuberance of springtime.
This poem got edited heavily down in later versions, and perhaps it needed it. But he eliminated one of my favorite lines, "I must change the strain". Gonna drop that in conversation next time I need to change the topic.
