Not only Gmail has been infested with bad AI, but also other Google products. Chrome has a "help me write" feature. You can [disable it in the AI innovations settings](chrome://settings/ai). Unfortunately the intrusive popup is still showing up in Gmail and I can't find any way to turn it off. (See image)
There's also a Chrome setting that allows better browser history search. I've wanted that for years so I've turned that one on for now. Maybe it's better than all the other Gemini crap?

Despite being the only thing ensuring that gmail.com, bankofamerica.com or any other website is controlled by the entity claiming ownership,
the entire system can collapse with a single point of failure.

Google's AI in Gmail is so bad I've downgraded my subscription to remove the AI features. Unfortunately I'm stuck with its intrusive suggestions for the next month until the change takes effect. The UI is really aggressive. I'd be OK with that if the AI suggestions were any good.
It's astonishing how far behind Google is on AI applications. I actively want this AI stuff in my Google products but their implementation is so bad I give up.

Warning to all Gmail users after 183 million email accounts are hacked | The Independent

there exist several pieces of folk wisdom:
- "you cannot run your own mail server in 2025, this is too hard and time consuming" (completely false, i've done this since ~2010 with minimal ongoing maintenance)
- "you can do it but gmail will sort your mail to spam" (partially true and what i want to talk about here)
recently, my hand was forced: i had to migrate my mail server across providers and regions. it's unimportant why but important what the …

One great thing about Proton mail is that they managed to include a simple 'Trash' option on the notifications for new mail alongside 'Archive' and 'Mark read'. It's such a small thing, but it's massively useful and is a time saver -- so you don't need to open each new email to delete it. Maybe Google will add that functionality someday, but Gmail still doesn't have it.
EDIT: Gmail doesn't have it for ME? I'm hearing others might have it?…

The conversation in the last boost is just a laundry list of large orgs who can't deliver to gmail. gmail users just don't have a working email system but I guess they don't care because email works so bad in general anyway now.
Gemini also asserts my oldest emails are from April 2003 but produces incorrect info when asked for details. Gmail didn't even exist until April 2004 and regular search finds nothing before then. (It does find a lot of Jira spam starting April 8 2004, some things never change.)
More legacy edu space likely to be used for hosting.
Not immediately obvious who or what steel-axis is to me, and who they represent. They have a virtual business address in Delaware, a gmail email, and a RIR database contact address in Israel. RIPE-based LIR that has gotten a number of transfers over the years, usually ending up being used by India-based HostRoyale.
Someone should invent a way for computers to count. At the moment both GMail and GitHub have incorrect message counts in my inbox. Again.
This has happened many times. Given that computers make it possible for me to order toilet paper for delivery by 2pm and then send me hundreds of messages about toilet paper by 5pm, it seems odd to me that they can't count.
But hey, I guess it's hard to count how many things are in a list, especially when the list is empty.
Trump's FTC claims Gmail filtering Republican emails threatens “American freedoms”, rehashing an old claim with no substance.
GOP mail uses spammer techniques, including poor list management. Here's a graph

Trying to figure out why Gemini AI in Gmail is so very bad. It seems to not have access to all of my email and whatever RAG-like thing they are doing is very stupid.
Here's Gemini saying my oldest email matching some keywords in 2021 is from March 2021. If I explicitly tell it to look in February 2021, it finds it. There's only 11 emails that match in all of 2021, it's not like I'm blowing up the context window.
In case you run Linux with a reasonably current kernel and are experiencing strange network issues like unexpected connection failures, unreliable browsing, etc.: there's been a bug in the kernel's network code, affecting earlier 6.16.x versions. Had this myself and heard from some other people who were affected. Fix is in latest 6.16.5.

Jeez!
Mona is the best client for Mastodon.
Their tech support (at thespringsapp@gmail.com) got back to me IMMEDIATELY. Jonny suggested that I'd accidentally added something to my Mute Items tab.
I had. I'd added the word "the". That cut down on the messages I see...
But next time I need a rest, I'll try adding some letters, "e" or "s".
DUH!

I think my most-sent email of all time is "Does Tuesday at 2 pm work for you?" followed closely by "No worries, how about Wednesday?" 🫠
But what if you could just... not do that anymore?
There’s a scheduling tool hiding in plain sight in Gmail that ends all this nonsense. You offer times, they click once, and poof—it's in the calendar.

Huge thanks to @… for helping me figure out there is indeed a toggle you can set in Gmail to have the 'delete' option on the notification. The toggle is for delete OR archive, not both. As huge and ridiculous as Google is, they can't figure out how to have both delete and archive options on a notification at the same time. Cutting edge of technology
I don’t generally think of my life as boring, but I had a nightmare the other night wherein I couldn’t find an email in my Gmail account. I wasn’t terrified, but man, did I wake up anxious. #FirstWorldProblems

I don't know what the fuck is happening to software. Start Chrome on a new phone and it crashes, log in to a new Gmail account and it shows a “500 error" banner for 2 seconds. Open Google calendar, switch to the weekly view and the events are displayed as GIGA NARROW UNREADABLE BOXES.
YouTube on iOS? For months had a problem where sometimes the UI has the wrong colors, probably because of the dark mode thing.
Been experimenting with Shortwave, a frontend to Gmail with serious AI capabilities. So far it impresses me and is able to do the things that Gmail Gemini was failing me at. Main drawback is it's fairly expensive for a consumer product.

After some 30 years of using monkey.org I'm going to change my primary email address. Anti-spam measures has finally made using it with Gmail untenable, too many messages are disappearing. My new plan is to give a different domain entirely over to Google Apps for email. I am sad about this, the monkey folks are great.
Email used to be an open medium. It has now been wrecked by spammers and captured by a few companies.
Fick igång homeassistant med music assistant på min lilla mac mini server med ubuntu server på. Nu är min detox snart klar, återstår att gå från spottan till deezer.
