While helping my mum with something recently, I've noticed that her #GMail started featuring a banner that she ran out of space, and mails will stop arriving in less than a month. As expected, she never even noticed it. On the other hand, I had two thoughts about it.
Firstly, of course, #Google are shameless assholes (Microsoft's even worse, as I boosted at some point before). Mom's new phone came with Google Photos preinstalled in place of vendor's gallery, and of course it automatically started making backups of her photos and movies in the "cloud", or as I'd like to call it, to pedophiles. The photos finally filled up the free space, and Google started doing everything to convince her to buy more space. I honestly doubt she'd be able to figure out that she needed to turn these backups off and wipe them; if anything, I suspect she'd just start hopelessly removing photos from the phone, which might not have helped at all.
Secondly, it's that if such a thing happened to me, I probably wouldn't even know, because I'm reading my mail via a mail client. So I wouldn't ever have seen their banner. Well, unless they also send a mail about it, and my mom missed it among all the spam.

There had been another Stephen Rees, in the UK, who had tried to use Gmail by using his ID as ReesStephen
I had got though to him somehow. Obviously not by using Gmail so that ID appeared to available to someone in Australia
Gmail ignores dots and spaces in ID names
If you live in Australia and know someone with the same name as me who has recently opened a Gmail account just let them know nothing is going to get through to him. Sorry!

Google Workspace is not forwarding my private domain email reliably to Gmail: I think they're screwing up the ARC and stuff gets dropped as spam. Have you used either of these two alternatives?

1. Use Cloudflare or ForwardEmail to be MX for my domain and deliver to Gmail. Do they get ARC right?
2. Use Google Workspace "address mapping" to forward as the admin (instead of a personal forward). Does this work better?

Another day, another thwarted scammer. Yesterday it was GMail this morning it's Wealth Simple. I am pleased to report in both cases no damage was done. But scams seem to be becoming much more frequent.

Once upon a time when work was using its own email servers, I had to periodically archive my email accounts. I would create a new gmail account and just throw it up on there so the emails were still searchable in my mail client if the account was included…
Now I have a bunch of gmail accounts that have tens of thousands of emails form twenty years ago.
This is dumb... especially with storage the way it is these days.
So now I'm logging into those accounts, downloading the emails and any other Google data, and deleting the accounts from Google.
Fun Times, this long-time-digital-life life.

Google Workspace bounced an email to my somebits email address. That stuff just forwards to my gmail account. I've learned two things today:

1. Google's own forwarding of messages breaks DKIM and can cause email to be marked as spam just because of its own forwarding process
2. Google leaked my gmail address in the bounce from the message sent to my somebits address. That's a major privacy violation!

My work gmail has some ridiculous AI assist now, which includes such gems as suggesting I correct the grammar of "It looked" to … "It looked". Out of curiosity I accepted its suggestion, so it turned the prose into … "It It looked". Everything is just peachy now.

Reading algorithmic feeds is a crazy thing to do: abandoning control over your own influences to a robot programmed by advertisers to manipulate you?
Madness.
I will not allow a robot programmed by advertisers and surveillance capitalists to determine what I read.
I don’t read any robo-feeds and don’t recommend anyone else does.
But people do:

All designed to harvest data from your phone, three of them owned by one creepy billionaire, and most people use them by looking at a robo-feed suggesting to them what to read and watch or filter.
I don’t use any of them.
I watch some Youtube, but not though their app. Uninstalled that from my phone as soon as I got it. It’s an awful downgrade of just playing in a browser page. I subscribe to some channels there in my RSS reader like a boss. Never watch what their recommendation algorithms suggests.
I tell them what I want to watch, I don’t let them tell ME what to watch, and frankly I wish all those videographers would start a peertube instance or something instead of posting their work on a corporate surveillance site.
I say you should avoid that algorithm stuff, it’s crazy manipulative.
But people should be free to do what they want.
I’m free to block Facebook! And I do: and I encourage everyone else to do so too.
Edit your DNS, block their domain names. Do it.
But if governments or corporations have the power to mandate those choices for everyone, it will go badly.
Prohibitions always do.
